One tweet to woo them all, sent by @TigerWoods

While driving to the office today, I heard Dick Vitale on Mike & Mike in the Morning lamenting the negatives of Twitter as highlighted by Jaycutlergate. And in some respects Vitale was right: there are some negatives to Twitter, especially when it comes to knee-jerk overreactions that can harm reputations.

However, Twitter can also be awesome. Very awesome. One great example: Jim Irsay. Another great example: the tweet Tiger Woods sent out earlier today that may do more to humanize him than anything else since last Thanksgiving. (And I think I may actually be serious about that.)

Video: On behalf of all Green Bay, Charles Woodson sends a message to Chicago-loving President Barack Obama

Email Post Email Post
charles-woodson-speech-obama-mccarthy

Charles Woodson was the first defensive player to win the Heisman Trophy – beating out none other than Peyton Manning to do it. He was picked #4 overall in the 1998 draft. He has been named to seven Pro Bowls, three All Pro First Teams, three All Pro Second Teams, and was named the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2009.

Yet, despite all of these accomplishments, I’ve always felt that Woodson has been one of the most underrated football players of my lifetime.

Perhaps it is completely illogical and totally contradictory to list such a bevy of accomplishments and then in the next sentence claim that Charles Woodson is underrated. Perhaps. I think it’s more a testament to just how great Charles Woodson is that, at least in the consciousness of fans, as interpreted by me, his consistent greatness has been underappreciated.

Anyway, lauding Charles Woodson for his career achievements was not the original purpose of this post (although perhaps it should be the purpose of a future post…). Rather, the purpose of this post is to highlight a great post-game speech by Woodson on Sunday after the NFC Championship Game.

Brady Hoke Era begins in Ann Arbor; T-shirt now available for those caught up in the mania – the “Hokeamania”

I’ve written about our friends at Alternative Hero before, and I’m writing about them again today because I like the new T-shirt they just released*.

For fans of Michigan football, there hasn’t been much to get excited about lately, but perhaps the Brady Hoke Era can restore the past greatness of Big Blue. If so, then the entire city of Ann Arbor and most of the whole damn state of Michigan will have “Hokeamania”…meaning this shirt will be a must have.

T.O. and OchoCinco want to play in NY

Email Post Email Post

Update: Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco both said on the latest episode of The T.Ocho Show that they'd love to play for the Jets next season.

Fantasy Impact:  The Jets have Santonio Holmes and Braylon Edwards who are both free agents. There will certainly be some turnover next year for the Jets.

Denver hires Dennis Allen

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Denver Broncos have hired former Saints secondary coach Dennis Allen as their defensive coordinator.

Fantasy Impact:  This is an interesting turn of events.  Allen just recently interviewed in Philadelphia, and wasn't thought to be a candidate for the Broncos job, but he all of a sudden gets hired.  The reason it is so interesting is because the Broncos play a 3-4 defense, and Allen has only worked in a 4-3 system.   This should be interesting.

@JimIrsay Tweet(s) of the Day – Jim gives away a trip to the Super Bowl before being attacked by a flying cactus and getting pooped on

Twitter has done many things since it exploded onto the scene a couple of years ago. From the perspective of a die-hard, obsessive sports fan like myself, one of the great effects of Twitter has been to give us peeks behind the curtain, so to speak, at what our favorite athletes and sports figures are like.

Well, there is perhaps no more entertaining and off-the-rails curtain to peek behind than that of Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay. He joined the micro-blogging site not too long ago and quickly became a prolific, must-follow tweeter. Knowing a little something about Irsay’s backstory – especially his indefatigable love of music – will help you to put his tweets into context. This quick Irsay biography tells you all you need to know.

The @JimIrsay Tweet(s) of the Day is our daily (for the most part) segment that celebrates the most compelling of Irsay’s tweets. In today’s episode, Jim sends a fan/follower to Super Bowl 45 and also regales us with a tale of a hike in the Sedona desert during which, among other wild and crazy occurrences, he gets pooped on.

NCAA Hoops Crash Course: Big Ten – led by (who else?) Jared Sullinger and undefeated Ohio State

Email Post Email Post

[Editor's note: I am very excited to introduce new MSF contributor Andy Bottoms. He is a former contributor to RotoExperts and SI.com, as well as College Fantasy Hoops Insider. Andy will be covering college basketball as well as lending his perspective to anything else in the sports world that strikes him as interesting. And who knows, if Indiana ever fields a Division I basketball team again, maybe he and I - two Hoosiers alums - will actually have something to get excited about!]

———-

With the Super Bowl set and the NFL season nearly over, fans will be looking to fill their sports void with college hoops as we press on toward March Madness.  However, with many spending their time calling in Amber Alerts for Reggie Wayne during the fantasy playoffs, or wondering how to earn spare cash as Mark Sanchez’s human Kleenex, NCAA basketball has taken an unfortunate back seat.

Luckily, my Indiana roots have rendered me unable to fall victim to such traps, which is a bad thing for my family but a good thing for those of you looking to start prepping for the Big Dance.  In the coming weeks, I’ll give a crash course in what you may have missed over the first couple months of the season and what to look for as we near the midway point of conference play.

The Big Ten is up first.  You may remember this conference from dreaming up the dumbest division names in the history of organized sport or going 0-5 in New Year’s Day bowls. But the conference does boast some pretty good basketball teams.

Schottenheimer to return to Jets

Email Post Email Post

Update:  Jets head coach Rex Ryan confirmed Monday that Brian Schottenheimer "absolutely" will be brought back as offensive coordinator in 2011.

Fantasy Impact:  Schottenheimer didn't call his best game in the AFC Championship game, but the team ranked 11th overall in yards during the season and 13th in total points scored.

McKnight must get better

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Newark Star Ledger is reporting Jets RB Joe McKnight promises to be more diligent in his offseason training as a second-year player.

Fantasy Impact:  McKnight certainly has some talent, but it was interesting to see the young player's work ethic was questioned this season.  He was a fourth round pick, but showed that he has ability to be an impact player.  Look for him to get more opportunity next year.

Niners to call about Palmer

Email Post Email Post

Update: NFL Network's Mike Lombardi predicts that the 49ers will "at least make a phone call" to the Bengals about Carson Palmer.

Fantasy Impact:  The Niners are in dire need of a legit QB, but the Bengals have stated they will not deal Palmer.  It may be just talk on the Bengals end, but it would be a shocker to see the Niners pick up Palmer's inflated contract.
