Steeler’s C Pouncey misses practice

Email Post Email Post

Update: Albert Breer of the NFL Network reports that starting All-Pro rookie center for the Pittsburgh Steeler's had a cast on his left ankle Wednesday morning and was on crutches.

Fantasy Impact: Pouncey suffered a high ankle sprain in the AFC Championship win over the Jets last Sunday. Pouncey left the game in the first quarter, and was replaced by Doug Legursky. Don't expect to see Pouncey on the sidelines at the Super Bowl, he told Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that "I know in my heart that I'm playing in that game".

9 Last Name Alternatives Chad Ochocinco Should Consider Before Going Back to Johnson

Yesterday, in response to Chad Ochocinco’s claim that he was planning to change his last name back to Johnson, I tweeted the following:

This is really getting awkward with Chad Johnson/Ochocinco. Who is going to tell him he has, in general, overstayed his welcome?

My basic point was that with Chad’s production dwindling his antics and off-field self-promotion are becoming generally less palatable and interesting. A few minutes later I softened my stance a bit – mainly because while I may be annoyed by him, certainly more people find him interesting than find me interesting, so who am I to talk? – but the general point remains true.

I decided that to fully extend the olive branch to good ol’ 8-5, I should offer him something of value. Thus, here I am, to suggest nine last name alternatives that I think Chad should consider before going back to Johnson.

Welker not looking for new deal

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Boston Herald is reporting that Patriots wideout Wes Welker called his 2010 season "disappointing" and suggested that he's undeserving of a contract extension. "I think everybody wants a new deal," said Welker, "but I wouldn't say anything I did this past year would warrant one or anything like that."

Fantasy Impact:  Welker had a decent season, but is clearly the top wideout on the team.  He is going nowhere and is certain to get a contract extension at some point.

Green Bay Packers and Super Bowl XLV: The Perfect Fit

Email Post Email Post

There are certain things in life that just seem right.

For example, I have seen several players attempt the old “Rock the Cradle” dunk in the past ten years. JR Smith, Josh Smith, LeBron, even the greatest dunker of all time – Vince Carter. But every time I see Young Jordan, rocking the short shorts and the classic cursive “Chicago” across his chest, it just seems right. No one else has ever combined the fluidity, grace, and power on the dunk like Air himself. Even if someone was able to do it better, we would never admit it, because Jordan was put on earth to perform that dunk.

Another great example is Junior Griffey in the Home Run Derby. There was always something perfect about watching the guy with the smoothest swing of all time, flip his hat around backwards, and loop deep fly after deep fly over the fence. A few years ago, Josh Hamilton amazed us all with his incredible display of power, but I remember thinking to myself that it just didn’t seem as beautifully effortless as a young Griffey.

So yeah, certain things in life just seem right…like the Green Bay Packers in the Super Bowl.

Vick lands first endorsement since arrest

Email Post Email Post

Update: NFL.com reports that Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick signs first endorsement deal since his arrest in 2007. The deal is with a football pads provider called Unequal Technologies.

Fantasy Impact: Vick wore pads from Unequal Technologies and claims that by wearing them, he feels more confident and that it makes him "feel invincible". We saw some of that invincibility when he took off running and didn't bother to slide, instead he would fight for the extra couple of yards trying to shed off tacklers. This is important for Vick; people are starting to trust him again, I wouldn't be surprised to see him signing on more endorsements in the near future. Vick also stresses the fact that he is a changed man, and it's not about the money, if that is indeed true, he may not ask the Eagles for too much for his new contract, especially if Philadelphia is where he wants to continue playing.

Deseret Storm – San Diego State Aztecs Invade Cougar Town to Battle BYU

Email Post Email Post

There is a huge, eagerly awaited game in the college basketball world on Wednesday night – with gigantic bracketology ramifications come March. In fact, the electricity is so high that many have camped for days outside the arena in hopes of scoring a coveted spot in the student section come gametime.

Needless to say, there will be plenty of hysteria, and the color blue will be painted all over the place.

Normally, sentences like above would be talking about Cameron Indoor Stadium as the backdrop for North Carolina-Duke, but that is not for another two weeks. THE game this week features the #4 ranked San Diego State Aztecs traveling to the Wasatch Front to face 9th-ranked BYU.

To coin a phrase from a certain San Diego sportscaster.about SDSU..

‘Are they contenders, or are they pretenders…?’

NCAA Hoops Crash Course: ACC – led by (who else?) Duke and not much else

Email Post Email Post
acc-basketball

As we continue our crash course on the college basketball season so far (yesterday was the Big Ten), the next stop is in the ACC.  You remember the ACC, right?  Worse record in BCS Bowls than the Mountain West and the WAC.  Official mascot is Dick Vitale.

Now that we’ve cleared that up, I must issue one warning on behalf of the Surgeon General: Do not let children under the age of 13 watch ACC games this season.  The conference is virtually unwatchable, and if not for the weakest bubble in recent memory, most of these teams aren’t truly worthy of conversation.  And remember, that’s not me talking, it’s the Surgeon General, who in my head looks a lot like Wilfred Brimley (aka the Quaker Oats guy).

Chad says Adios to "Ochocinco"

Email Post Email Post

Update: On ESPN's "NFL Live" Chad Ochocinco announced he is changing his name back to "Chad Johnson".

Fantasy Impact: The fact that the controversial wide receiver changed his last name to represent a spanish translation of the number 85 he wears on his back was exceptionally odd, and maybe after two years of somewhat under-performace from the star WR, Chad himself finally realized just how it truly was. Chad said, "I've done enough with this Ocho thing, it was fun". I wouldn't be surprised to see him wearing a different number next season, and on a different team. After all, Chad's relationship with head coach Marvin Lewis hasn't been a very good one, and with Marvin Lewis's contract extension, the WR may be moving out this offseason.

Raiders sign Al Saunders as Offensive Coordinator

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Oakland Raiders added experience to their much improved offense by hiring longtime NFL assistant Al Saunders as their new offensive coordinator.

Fantasy Impact: The Raiders finished the 2010/2011 season 6th in the NFL in scoring with 410 points, over double than their 2009/2010 total. This could mean some improvement at the quarterback position since Saunders has worked with both Jason Campbell in Washington, and Bruce Gradkowski in St. Louis.

Eagles drop another Defensive Coach, LB Coach, Shuey

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Philadelphia Eagles have announced via Twitter that after nine seasons, Linebackers coach Bill Shuey will not return to the coaching staff next season.

Fantasy Impact: Shuey is the third defensive coach that has been released from the Eagles since their loss in the first round of the playoffs to the Green Bay Packers. It's no surprise that the Eagles want to do some remodeling on the defensive side of the football, after giving up 327.2 yards per game, 12th in the NFL, 32nd in red-zone defense, and allowing a team record of 31 passing touchdowns. Look for the Eagles defense to under go a complete make-over, including an addition of a couple new players.

The Idiocracy is here…and it’s wearing a shirt from Wet Seal

Friends, please indulge me, if you will, as I step outside the sports world for a few moments.

As some of you have probably noticed, proper grammar and spelling have been two of the most notable casualties of the Text and Tweet Age. From time to time I get frustrated and pop off about this on Twitter. It’s not that I’m perfect; far from it. I make plenty of mistakes, but I always try. And I always call myself out on those rare occasions when I hit send on a tweet or publish a post before correcting an egregious their/there or your/you’re mistake.

Hey, mistakes happen. I bet even the editor of the MLA Style Manual has goofed up a your/you’re before (for sure). However, neither this ostensibly meticulous individual nor I have ever printed these errors on T-shirts and then sold them to impressionable teenage girls for profit.

Wet Seal has however, and I’m here to publicly lambaste them for it, as well as honor someone else who took matters into his own hands to speak for all of us who want to figuratively grab Wet Seal and wring there…*ahem, I mean their…necks.
