Update: The Baltimore Sun is reporting that the Baltimore Ravens have fired QBs coach Jim Zorn.

Fantasy Impact: Zorn will find another job, but he just didn't develop Joe Flacco the way the Ravens had hoped.  Neither Jim Harbaugh or coordinator Cam Cameron really bought into Zorn's abilities.

Here’s the quick rundown:

Ward "hasn’t thought" about retirement

Email Post Email Post

Update: NFL.com reports that Pittsburgh Steelers WR Hines Ward claims that he hasn't given much thought about retiring.

Fantasy Impact: Hines Ward told a group of high school students in April that he would retire if he won another super bowl. This uncertainty of retirement is good for Ward, it says the only thing he is worried about is the Super Bowl. Look for him to work harder than he ever has in this upcoming game.

Record attendance for Super Bowl XLV

Email Post Email Post

Update: Super Bowl XLV in Dallas, Texas is expected to break record for largest crowd to ever attend a Super Bowl.

Fantasy Impact: It's no surprise that this super bowl will break records considering it is between two of the most successful franchises in NFL history. League spokesmen Brian McCarthy said that an estimated 105,000 spectators will attend: 95,000 fans in seats, 5000 media members, and 5000 who paid for tickets to watch the game from the parking lot on the series of big screen TV's that border the stadium. The record was set in the 1980 Super Bowl between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the LA Rams, with 103,985.

People across the land have talked all season about how bad the ACC is.  Some have even used what can only be hoped is hyperbole and claimed that the league is on par with the (gasp!) Horizon league.

So I thought it was my duty, as an avid follower of the ACC since the mid ‘80s, to weigh in on the debate.

A reasoned plea to athletes and other public figures: stop your egregious, persistent misuse of the phrase “I am humbled”

Email Post Email Post
i-am-humbled-matt-millen

Before I get into the meat of this post, I just want to say that I am humbled, truly humbled, you have chosen to visit our little corner of the sports blogosphere to read what I have to say.

Or am I?

Well, if I were to use the phrase “I am humbled” like we hear so many athletes and public figures use it, then yes, I suppose I am actually humbled that by virtue of you reading these words you are giving me the very real gift of your time and the honor of your attention.

But – and forgive me for being blunt here, because I am thisclose to exploding in petpeeved annoyance – how in the hell is that actually humbling?

The reality is that it’s not. Your presence here is not humbling. The fact that you – a reader I respect and try to entertain and inform every day – are reading these words that I have written fills me with more pride than I can put into words. And the last time I checked – ten seconds ago – pride is an antonym of humility.

So what gives? Am I humbled by your presence or prideful about your presence? Am I both? Neither? One thing is for sure: don’t look to athletes for guidance on this one.

Stronger. Faster. Wealthier. As fans, we can compile a lengthy list of adjectives to describe ways in which athletes are different than us. However, this week has highlighted a couple things we all have in common:

One, we make mistakes.

And two, we struggle to admit it when we do number one.

Chicago Blackhawks: Midseason Report Card

Email Post Email Post

Chicago Blackhawks: 26-20-4 56 points. 8th in the Western Conference.

It’s been a long and winding road so far this season or the Chicago Blackhawks. Adjusting to the new players in the  lineup has taken longer than hoped and expected, but that hasn’t brought down the players or fans.

Like I wrote earlier, I believe there is reason to be optimistic about the second half of the season.

With that in mind, let us get started with my midseason report card for the 2010-11 Chicago Blackhawks.

Dick LeBeau will stay in Pittsburgh

Email Post Email Post

Update: Pittsburgh Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau told the NFL Network Wednesday that he will not leave the Steeler's organization to coach anywhere else.

Fantasy Impact: LeBeau insisted, "I promise you, if I'm coaching, it will be the Pittsburgh Steelers". LeBeau has been the defensive coordinator sine 2004 and has built up one of the best and most respected defenses in the NFL during his reign. If LeBeau stays with the Steelers as he is promising, look for them to again be one of the highest rated defenses in the NFL.
