Just Because: My Favorite Current and Old ESPN SportsCenter Commercials

ESPN takes a ton of criticism, especially in the sports blogosphere and on Twitter, and I think they deserve the vast majority of it. Still, they are the Worldwide Leader (self-proclaimed anyway) for a reason, and that reason is this: when ESPN is not busy sniffing its own flatulence, the network can produce some pretty damn compelling sports entertainment programming.

The most obvious example is the 30 for 30 documentary series, which is terrific and universally renowned for being so. But an even more ubiquitous example is the series of funny SportsCenter commercials featuring athletes that ESPN has been producing for 15 or so years now. These commercials rarely disappoint.

In this post, I’ll share with you my favorite current ESPN commercial and my favorite two from the voluminous archive of this series.

Where To ‘Melo? (UPDATED)

Email Post Email Post

The Miami Heat were among this past offseason’s biggest stories. No doubt, no doubt. The teaming of the superstars made waves all over the sporting world and began a new era in the NBA. But at the same time, they aren’t doing anything new. They took the blueprints to success from the Lakers, Celtics, Bulls, and numerous other dynasties.

But along with the Heat’s mega-offseason came another side story. The story of Carmelo Anthony and just where he’d end up.

The attention seems to be mainly focused on the Big Apple. You have Prokhorov fighting to the earth’s ends in order to secure Melo for the future Brooklyn Nets, and then you have Amar’e attempting to recruit Anthony to play alongside him in New York. Heck, I’ve even heard Charlotte and Houston mentioned in this crazy mix. It seems as if we are in the midst of a great game of tug-o-war.

But it is yet to be finalized where the Syracuse alum will end up. Will he land alongside Amar’e, and try and build another mega-team? Or will he take his talents to New Jersey and try to continue Prokhorov’s global agenda? I wish I knew the answer.

Wilford arrested

Email Post Email Post

Update: WJXT Jacksonville reports that former Jaguars tight end Ernest Wilford was arrested on early Friday morning "on charges of trespassing and resisting arrest without violence." He allegedly "inappropriately touched at least two women."

Fantasy Impact:  Wilford was a non impact player for the Jags this season.  He is going to be looking for a new team this offseason, but it shouldn't be too easy for him to find work.

Browns interested in Jauron

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Cleveland Plain-Dealer reports the Browns could be interested in hiring former Bills and Bears head coach Dick Jauron as their next defensive coordinator.

Fantasy Impact: Jauron was with the Eagles last season, but it is clear that he is most likely going to get a better opportunity this offseason.  Don't be shocked if he is with another organization before training camp.

Jags not impressed with Garrard

Email Post Email Post

Update: Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio reemphasized that he does not believe David Garrard is an "elite" quarterback.

Fantasy Impact:  Del Rio is going to be on the hot seat next season and if he does not feel like Garrard can be his go to guy, then he and the Jags must do something in the offseason to fix that.

The Sports Fan Music Video Tribute: Then…and Now

Email Post Email Post
video-new-england-the-patriots-and-we

Earlier this week, I posted the “This is Indiana” fan tribute video created by IU students Brice Fox and Daniel Weber. The video features Fox and Weber, clad in headbands with their muscle-free arms dangling out of tank tops, rapping about their love for Indiana basketball. While the song has a catchy beat, and I admit to randomly singing it around the office this week,  it is undoubtedly among the cheesiest 3 minutes and 49 seconds of video uploaded to the Internet this week.

But Fox and Weber are not groundbreaking mix masters of sports-inspired musical cheese. Far from it. The sports fan music video tribute is nearly as old as the music video itself, and damn near as unintentionally hilarious as football analysis by Joe Theismann (though don’t tell that Deion).

After posting the “This is Indiana” video, I was inundated with links to other sports fan music video tributes while discussing the topic on Twitter and via email with various folks. While reviewing these inspired yet awful videos, I was struck by the applicability of an old cliche: the more things change, the more they stay the same.

In this post, I offer up two sports fan music video tributes – one from 1986 and one from 2010 – that show just how alike in spirit and unabashed cheese every video in this genre has been…and probably always will be.

Jackson could return to Bucs

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Buccaneers are reportedly open to having suspended safety Tanard Jackson return to the team, but they're not counting on his return next season.

Fantasy Impact:  It is nice that the Bucs are publicly stating this, but they are well aware that commissioner Roger Goodell has no plans of lifting the indefinite suspension that Jackson is serving any time soon.

Hernandez set to go Sunday

Email Post Email Post

Update: ESPNBoston is reporting that Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez (hip) confirmed that he's "ready" for Sunday's game against the Jets.

Fantasy Impact:  Hernandez has had two huge games against the Jets this season, and we don't expect Sunday will be any different.  With Wes Welker getting most of the coverage, look for Hernandez to be one of Brady's go to guys this Sunday.

Carpenter wants to return to Lions

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Detroit Free Press is reporting that free agent linebacker Bobby Carpenter wants to re-sign with the Lions in 2011.

Fantasy Impact: Carpenter stepped in late in the season and showed he was a serviceable player, but the Lions will look for more of an impact player at the LB position this offseason.

Cam Newton leaving Auburn

Email Post Email Post

Update:  FoxSports' Jay Glazer is reporting that Auburn quarterback Cameron Newton will bypass his senior season to enter the 2011 NFL Draft.

Fantasy Impact:  Newton leaves school fresh off his BCS National Title win.  He is a first round pick for certain after compiling 30 passing touchdowns along with 1,473 rushing yards and 20 more scores.

McNabb expected back for Skins

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Washington Post is reporting that Redskins GM Bruce Allen made it clear Thursday that he doesn't plan to release Donovan McNabb.

Fantasy Impact:  This is merely the Redskins attempting to pump up McNabb's trade value.  There is little chance the Skins actually will bring McNabb back after all that transpired this year.

Grant expects to be back

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Milwaukee Sentinel is reporting that Packers running back Ryan Grant (ankle) expects to be back to 100 percent sometime in February.

Fantasy Impact: Grant is scheduled to make $3.5 million this year with a roster bonus of almost $2 million, so there was so gossip about him possibly being released.  The Packers clearly missed him in the ground game, and Grant figures to be welcomed back with open arms.
