packers-bears-rivalry-george-halas-vince-lombardi

This one is going to be huge; a battle of epic proportions.

The Green Bay Packers-Chicago Bears rivalry is the oldest and one of the premier rivalries in all of the NFL. The two teams have met 181 times, including once in the playoffs, but when they meet this Sunday the stakes will never have been higher.

Overall in the series the Bears have 92 wins, the Packers have 83 wins, and there have been 6 ties. However, Green Bay has won 26 of the last 37 meetings. On top of that, the two teams have combined for 21 NFL titles, 31 division titles, 52 playoff appearances, and 47 Pro Football Hall of Famers. Football legends like Vince Lombardi and George Halas are among the alums of this incredible rivalry.

The numbers, the stories, the history…it’s all staggering.

@JimIrsay Tweet(s) of the Day – Jim posts a new Twitter pic and requests that you be more like him

Email Post Email Post
irsay-tweet-1

Twitter has done many things since it exploded onto the scene a couple of years ago. From the perspective of a die-hard, obsessive sports fan like myself, one of the great effects of Twitter has been to give us peeks behind the curtain, so to speak, at what our favorite athletes and sports figures are like.

Well, there is perhaps no more entertaining and off-the-rails curtain to peek behind than that of Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay. He joined the micro-blogging site not too long ago and quickly became a prolific, must-follow tweeter. Knowing a little something about Irsay’s backstory – especially his indefatigable love of music – will help you to put his tweets into context. This quick Irsay biography tells you all you need to know.

The @JimIrsay Tweet(s) of the Day is our daily (for the most part) segment that celebrates the most compelling of Irsay’s tweets. There is so much to love in today’s episode. Not only does Jim post a rather bizarre new Twitter pic, but some of his song lyrics are especially off the wall (at least, I hope they’re song lyrics…).

Angry Audio: Cleveland Talk Show Host Says Cleveland Browns Owners Are “The Devil Themselves”

Email Post Email Post
greg-kozarik-cleveland

Somebody woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning; and that somebody is Greg Kozarik, the host of Locked and Loaded on the Cleveland.com Digital Sports Network.

In an angry rant earlier today, Kozarik says many things, including the word “process” at least 50 times (I’m not exaggerating). Among the accusations he hurls to and fro: Browns are sheep; Browns management insanely tries the same things over and over again while expecting different results; and, he refers to the Lerner family as “the devil themselves”.

The line that will probably end up being the most memorable and notorious from this roughly 8:30 rant is this one:

Al Lerner himself is down in hell right now laughing with Satan, because do you know how much money he stole from Cleveland Browns fans?

Listen for yourself:

Video: Old dude gets jiggy with it on the JumboTron

I know, I know…the whole Epic JumboTron Dance meme is a bit played out. Still though, there are extreme examples of memes even after they are worn that makes us remember why it was a meme in the first place.

The following video of an old dude getting jiggy with it at a Lakers game, and then a little kid doing the same, is a nice example of why the Epic JumboTron Dance meme was even a meme in the first place.

Let’s commence a much-deserved standing slow clap for Gil Meche, shall we?

The pages of sports blogs are filled with fan complaints about the greed of professional athletes. Some of these complaints are valid, some of them are naive, unfair, and lacking in perspective, and the rest fall somewhere in between.

Rarely though are we presented with a story about an athlete dealing with his contract in which all sports fans agree that the athlete handled it in a way that is selfless, integrity-filled, and generally beyond reproach.

Today, we are presented with such a story, which is why I want to take a few minutes to recognize Gil Meche, formerly of the Kansas City Royals.

Fox won’t name Tebow starter

Email Post Email Post

Update: New Broncos coach John Fox would not commit to starting Tim Tebow at quarterback when asked Tuesday on the Dan Patrick Show. "Just like any position, they’ll compete and we’ll go from there," Fox said. "It’s too early for me to say… I’m going to evaluate guys on grass and we’ll have to see when we get those opportunities."

Fantasy Impact:  Fox will most likely roll the dice with Tebow if he is able to deal Kyle Orton this offseason.  If not, there is going to be a QB competition in camp.

Mora leaves Denver with no deal

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Denver Post is reporting that former Falcons coach Jim Mora left Denver without an agreement to become the Broncos defensive coordinator.

Fantasy Impact: The thought is Mora’s contract details has been the hang up, but it should get worked out just like Josh McDaniels’ contract did with the Rams.

Lloyd earns pay day

Email Post Email Post

Update: Denver Broncos wideout Brandon Lloyd earned an escalator in his contract that upped his 2011 salary from $795,000 to $1.4 million. He got the pay increase for making the AFC's Pro Bowl roster.

Fantasy Impact:  At $1.4 million, he is still underpaid so don't be shocked if he makes some noise about wanting a new deal.  The only negative Llyod has going against him is that he is turning 30 this offseason.

Akers wants to return to Eagles

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Philadelphia Daily News is reporting that Eagles kicker David Akers, 36, wants to continue his career in 2011 and hopes to do it in Philadephia.

Fantasy Impact:  Akers has been Mr. Consistent in Philly, but did choke on two field goal attempts in the team's loss to the Packers.  Expect the Eagles to re-sign him.

Davis believes in wideout

Email Post Email Post

Update:  The Associated Press is reporting that Raiders owner Al Davis still thinks former No. 7 overall pick Darrius Heyward-Bey is "going to be good." "Explosion," Davis said. "He can catch, he's getting better, and he's a good guy. He's going to be good."

Fantasy Impact:  The former No. 7 pick is certainly a great talent, but he drops passes and has been told he runs poor routes. Davis is not the best evaluator of talent so take these comments with a grain of salt.

After arrest for threatening woman, are we finally done playing games with Milton Bradley?

Email Post Email Post

Has the career of Milton ‘Meltdown’ Bradley finally reached a dead end?? Has he finally used the last of his Get Out of Jail Fee cards??

Is this the case of someone who simply just keeps getting away with saying Sorry?? Or someone who merely continues to fall off the wrong side of Chutes and Ladders??

Maybe Milton’s Battleship finally got sunk?? Or more likely, this is the tale of someone without a clue who couldn’t add two plus two, much less Connect 4.

In what may at last be the final straw to his career, Bradley was arrested in Los Angeles yesterday, initial reports are that it involved a felony violation of California Penal Code Section 422, the charge is said to have involved making a threat towards a woman – and Milton has been released on $50,000 bail.
