WR Manningham expected to play next week

Email Post Email Post

Update: CBSsports.com is reporting that New York Giants WR Mario Manningham is expected to play next week but doesn't know how his hip injury will be after a full week of practice. Manningham has a hip flexor that is "an issue" according to Head Coach Tom Coughlin.

Fantasy Impact: Manningham will be filling WR Steve Smith's shoes now that Smith is out for the year with a knee injury. He already has five touchdowns on the year and will probably greatly improve those numbers now that Smith is gone. If healthy, he should be used as a second or third wide receiver in all fantasy leagues.

Seahawks WR Williams returns to practice

Update: CBSsports.com is reporting that Seattle Seahawks WR Mike Williams returned to practice Wednesday after missing week 14 with a sprained ankle. He said he is excited about next week's game.

Fantasy Impact: Williams is a hit or miss player, meaning he's either going to put up big numbers or none at all. Considering he's coming off an ankle injury, it's safe to keep him on the bench this week even if he does play.

WR Jackson misses practice with foot sprain

Update: CBSsports.com is reporting that Philadelphia Eagles WR DeSean Jackson missed practice Wednesday with a sprained foot. The injury came in the Eagles Sunday night win over the Dallas Cowboys. However, Jackson finished the game and managed to put up 210 yards receiving on the night.

Fantasy Impact: This is probably just a precautionary measure since the injury wasn't serious enough to knock Jackson out of the game. Still, monitor his status throughout the week and if healthy is a must-start receiver as he and QB Mike Vick really seem to be firing on all cylinders.

WR Collie practices in full

Email Post Email Post

Update: ESPN.com is reporting that Indianapolis Colts WR Austin Collie practiced in full and hopes to play next week against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Collie suffered a concussion on Nov. 7 and has been suffering from symptoms related to the concussion ever since.

Fantasy Update: The Colts have been destroyed by injuries this year. Collie was having a fantastic season before getting hurt so they will need him in order to make a playoff run. For now, fantasy owners should keep a close eye on him throughout the week to see if he will start.

QB Cassel back at practice after surgery

Email Post Email Post

Update: ESPN.com is reporting that Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel practiced for the first time since having surgery for an appendectomy. His status for Sunday's game against the St. Louis Rams is still uncertain.

Fantasy Impact: The Chiefs need Cassel in order to continue their success this season. Monitor his status throughout the week and if he is healthy should be considered a low number one quarterback in terms of fantasy.

Giants WR Smith out for season

Email Post Email Post

Update: ESPN.com is reporting that New York Giants WR Steve Smith will miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury. Smith will require surgery on his left knee and will need significant time to recover. The injury comes in his first game in four weeks.

Fantasy Update: This is a pretty big deal to an already thin Giants group of receivers. In terms of fantasy, drop him immediately as he won't be playing anymore this season.

——————–

On the one hand, we have a game here of mighty proportions.

Both the 49ers and Chargers can give the leaders of the painfully average divisions they’re currently trailing another reason to take a glance in the ol’ rearview.  Then again, it’s not like anyone’s running away in these races.

There shouldn’t be too much advance planning going on, even if that planning should be more towards extended stays on beachfront properties rather than football games.

And with that dumb joke, let’s address the unavoidable truth that something is screwed up with the NFL playoff system this year.

The NBA Morning After: Pieces in Play Edition

Email Post Email Post

The Morning After is a look at the night that was in the NBA along with other NBA-related fodder.

– The Sixers beat the Nets in Jersey, 82-77, but that’s not the real news. The actual news comes off the court, where the Nets look like they’re bringing in Laker exile Sasha Vujacic to join also former-Laker Jordan Farmar on the New Jersey bench. Kind of a lateral move, no?

More importantly, the trade will also send two first round picks to New Jersey, giving them a grand total of four should they, you know, want to put together a trade package for anyone.

– Speaking of someone, the Nuggets wore out Orlando in Denver, 111-94. Carmelo had 35 and 11, as he continues to be totally not concerned, or even interested, in any of that trade nonsense. At this point, I think we’re just ready for him to go somewhere, yes?

One More Look at Brett Favre’s Amazing Streak

Email Post Email Post

For the first time since September 13, 1992, Brett Favre was not under center for an NFL team. That’s 18 years and 3 months, 6,665 days to be exact. Since 1992, there have been 410 other quarterbacks to start for other NFL teams.

In his career, 16 quarterbacks have waited for this day to come, a chance to start in his place. The names range from Paul McJulien, Ty Detmer, T.J. Rubley, Craig Hentrich and Steve Bono to Jim McMahon, Matt Hasselbeck, Doug Peterson and Aaron Rodgers.

Eagles sign LB Burgess

Email Post Email Post

Update: ESPN.com is reporting that the Philadelphia Eagles have signed former Oakland Raiders and New England Patriots LB Derrick Burgess. The move was made to replace DE Brandon Graham who is lost for the reason with a knee injury. Burgess was originally drafted by the Eagles in 2001.

Fantasy Impact: Burgess is a good replacement as he can play both linebacker and defensive end. He will give added depth to the Eagles defense and is familiar with the Eagles defensive scheme. The Eagles DST is a reliable fantasy option that can start every week in all fantasy leagues.

It’s GREAT to be a Philadelphia sports fan — even if their fans won’t admit it

The most coveted free agent of this offseason chose to return to Philadelphia mainly because he loved his three months there in 2009. That’s quite a compliment to the city, the team, and their fans.

DT McCoy out for season

Email Post Email Post

Update: ESPN.com is reporting that Tampa Bay Buccaneers DT Gerald McCoy will miss the ramainder of the season with a right arm injury. He suffered the injury last week against the Washington Redskins.

Fantasy Impact: McCoy is a big reason for the Bucs success this season defensively. However, the Bucs defense isn't a good fantasy option, so this news can be ignored.
