Samuel,Justice ruled out vs. Cowboys

Email Post Email Post

Update: NFL.com is reporting that Eagles cornerback Asante Samuel and right tackle Winston Justice will not travel with the team for Sunday night’s game against the Cowboys. This will be Samuel’s third consecutive missed game. In his absence, Philadelphia’s pass defense has fallen from 13th to 17th and quarterbacks Jay Cutler and Matt Schaub have had big days. King Dunlap will start at right tackle in place of Justice.

Fantasy Impact: In some ways, Samuel’s absence will be something of a wash given that Dallas’ star rookie wide receiver Dez Bryant has recently been placed on injured reserve. However, this is still an offense that features Miles Austin and Jason Witten and given this, and the past four games over which quarterback Jon Kitna has completed 79 of 114 passes (69.3%) for 954 yards, 7 TD passes, 1 TD run, and just two turnovers, with a Roy Williams fumble on Thanksgiving being the only thing separating the Cowboys from a perfect record over that stretch, I still expect the Eagles to have their hands full. Justice’ injury isn’t quite as much of a concern, given that Dunlap has filled in well for Justice and left tackle Jason Peters in the past, and Michael Vick’s elusiveness hides a lot of the offensive line’s deficiencies. Overall, despite the Cowboys’ recent resurgence under interim head coach Jason Garrett, I think the three losses that Philadelphia suffered at the hands of Dallas last season, including the wild card round of the playoffs, will still be fresh in the Birds’ minds and I think they will use the Sunday night stage of the billion-dollar Cowboys Stadium to pay back their rivals as well as to send a message to anyone who stands in their way as they attempt to return to the stadium for the Super Bowl on February 6.

Rookie Skelton to start for Cardinals

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Associated Press is reporting that Cardinals rookie quarterback John Skelton will start Sunday against the Broncos. Skelton made his NFL debut last week against the Rams and completed three of six passes for 45 yards and was sacked once in a 19-6 loss. His most impressive play was a 22-yard completion to Steve Breaston on 3rd and 16. Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt said Skelton’s “command of the offense was a lot better” this week. “I think that, coupled with the fact that he handled himself pretty well last week in the game, makes you feel that he’s a lot better prepared now than he was earlier. It doesn’t mean that it’s going to be great quarterback play, but we’re hopeful that he can get in there and handle it well and make some plays for us.”

Fantasy Impact: Derek Anderson’s concussion and Max Hall’s dislocated left shoulder made it so that Whisenhunt didn’t have much choice as to who he should start, but seeing what Skelton can do over these final four weeks is of tremendous benefit to the Cardinals. Given the inconsistency and lack of accuracy that Anderson has shown not just this season, but in his last two years with the Browns, it seems pretty clear that he is not the long-term answer. Hall, though a rookie like Skelton, probably does not have the size or physical tools to be a franchise quarterback. In the time leading up to April’s draft and in the offseason, Skelton drew numerous comparisons to Joe Flacco, given his size, arm strength, small-school background, and seemingly unflappable demeanor. What Skelton provides at this point in the season for a 3-9 team whose playoff hopes have evaporated, is hope going into 2011 that they have a guy who can run Arizona’s offense at its maximum potential, i.e. giving Larry Fitzgerald and Steve Breaston opportunities to make big plays downfield. I would expect Whisenhunt to loosen the reins considerably against a struggling Denver secondary in its first game with a new head coach.

——————–

Doing these previews this season has been a lot of fun.  I’ve had to pay attention to the league as a whole on a regular basis, think about teams I normally wouldn’t be thinking of, and click on tabs and links that say something other than “NFC North.”

It’s probably been good for me to get out there into the NFL world a little bit, to get away (but not too far away) from my cozy little corner of football, where all I only think of things such as Charles Woodson, predatory mammals, and Brett Favre’s dick.  Uh, yeah, I probably needed some fresh air.

That said, I never thought I’d spend as much time as I have – or at least as it feels like I have – writing and thinking about the AFC freaking South.  Boy, the league sure did seem to have high hopes for these guys.  And especially now with the Colts at the tipping point, there’s been some excitement from this division, it’s pretty safe to say it’s been a disappointment as a whole.

With the Texans’ appearance on Monday night, we have reached the last time a team from the AFC South will play on a Monday or Thursday night (I made sure to look ahead this time).  Between this, and covering the Colts/Titans Thursday night game, it makes sense that the one team I won’t be writing about just so happens to be the one likeliest to make the playoffs.

Redskins get Torain back this week

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to profootballtalk.com, the Washington Redskins are expecting to have RB Ryan Torain back in the backfield for their matchup against Tampa Bay this weekend. Torain hasn't played since week 8 due to a hamstring injury.

Fantasy Impact: Coach Shanahan has yet to name a starter for Washington yet so hold off on putting Torain in your lineup. Once Torain gets back to game shape, he should get the bulk of the carries. He hasn't played in over 5 weeks so it might take some time. At least for this week, look for Torain to split carries with Keiland Williams, at best.

Spikes gets four-game suspension

Email Post Email Post

Update: NFL.com is reporting that Patriots rookie linebacker Brandon Spikes has been suspended for four games for violating the league’s performance-enhancing substances policy. The NFL issued a statement: “Spikes’ suspension begins immediately. He will be eligible to return to the Patriots’ active roster on Monday, January 3 following the team’s final regular season game on January 2 against the Miami Dolphins.” This means that Spikes is eligible to participate in all playoff games, assuming New England reaches the postseason. Spikes issued a statement of his own: “I’ve been contacted by the NFL and informed that I will be suspended four games for the detection of an illegal substance in a drug test. The substance was a medication that I should have gotten clarification on before taking. It was not a performance enhancer or an illegal drug. The integrity of the game is very important to me. I understand the league’s ruling and apologize to my teammates, the fans, and the Patriots organization for this mistake.”

Fantasy Impact: Spikes has been one of the best players on New England’s young defense. Given upcoming contests on the schedule against the Bears, the Dolphins, and an underrated Bills’ offense, I would expect the Patriots and head coach Bill Belichick to have their hands full in preparing for these foes. Fortunately, the Pats are a virtual shoo-in to make the postseason at this point, so Spikes will have four weeks to freshen and rest his body somewhat, or at the very least, give the Patriots time to figure out how to stop offenses without him.

Harvin doubtful

Email Post Email Post

Update: Rotoworld.com is reporting that the Vikings are not optimistic about WR Percy Harvin playing this weekend against the Giants. Harvin is listed as doubtful due to suffering migranes. Harvin missed last week's game as well.

Fantasy Impact: If Harvin, cannot go, Greg Camarillo will get the snaps in the slot. Coach Leslie Frazier said it would be "very very difficult" to get Harvin up to speed for the game Sunday. Harvin looks more and more likely to sit, but you can count on a lot of targets going Sidney Rice's way again.

Cassel listed as doubtful vs. Chargers

Email Post Email Post

Update: Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel, who hasn’t practiced since undergoing an appendectomy Wednesday, is listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game in San Diego. The Kansas City Star is reporting that head coach Todd Haley declined to discuss Cassel’s status “for competitive reasons”, but as many of us know, when any player, let alone the starting quarterback, goes three straight days without practicing and is listed as doubtful, the chances of him playing are slim to none.

Fantasy Impact: I wasn’t crazy about the Chiefs’ chances going into this game. They barely squeaked by the Chargers in a Monday night game in Week 1, in Kansas City, at a time when the Chargers were playing their worst ball. Now they are playing a San Diego team that, though inspiring very little confidence in their showing last week against the Raiders, has their backs against the wall and knows that a victory this weekend could put them right back in the thick of the AFC West race. Add to this backup Brodie Croyle’s 0-9 career record as a starter. Yes, I know he’s young and the games he has played have been on some very bad Chief teams over the last couple years, but asking a guy with such little experience and past success to replace a guy who has thrown for 2,503 yards, 23 TD’s, and 4 INT’s so far this season, sounds like a bit much. Also, despite the Chargers’ sub-par performance against Oakland, I still say they’re a top-notch December team, particularly given that Vincent Jackson is expected to play. Furthermore, I have questions about the Chiefs given that running back Jamaal Charles is in his first season where he will have accumulated more than 250 touches, which is usually hard on running backs late in the season. 32-year old back Thomas Jones struggled late last year for the Jets, and though he hasn’t toted the rock this year as much as he did last year in New York, it has to be a concern for Haley and coordinator Charlie Weis. Lastly, as great as their defense has been throughout the year, you wonder how a unit so low on experience will fare down the stretch. Then again, maybe I’m biased because I bet my friend that the Chiefs wouldn’t win the division before the season started!

Seattle WRs Obomanu and Williams do not practice

Email Post Email Post

Update: Both of Seattle's top WRs, Mike Williams and Ben Obomanu, did not practice today according to Eric Williams of the Tacoma News Tribune. Williams was held out due to an ankle injury while Obomanu is dealing with a hand injury. Both will likely be game time decisions.

Fantasy Impact: Williams has sat out the past two games with actually two injuries (ankle and foot). Obomanu has been the other go to WR in the Seattle offense. Deon Butler and Brandon Stokely will start if neither can go Sunday.

CB Bartell likely out this week

Email Post Email Post

Update: STLtoday.com is reporting that St. Louis Rams CB Ron Bartell will most likely miss Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints. Bartell suffered a "stinger" last week and has lost strength in his neck and shoulder area. He is officially listed as doubtful on the team's injury report.

Fantasy Impact: The Rams defense has been surprisingly good this year in terms of fantasy, usually worth the start every week due to the Rams' weak schedule. However, Bartell's presence is a huge part of the Rams' defensive success. Sit the Rams DST this week and look for defensive help elsewhere.

QB McCoy back at practice

Email Post Email Post

Update: ESPN.com is reporting that Cleveland Browns QB Colt McCoy returned to practice Friday for the first time since Nov. 21. McCoy suffered a high ankle sprain against Jacksonville three weeks ago and has been out ever since. Head Coach Eric Mangini said that depending on how the ankle responds, McCoy could be the third quarterback on the depth chart.

Fantasy Impact: McCoy is a very promising young quarterback, but he isn't worth anything in terms of fantasy this season. Since the best-case scenerio is the third-string quarterback, he obviously shouldn't be the starter for any fantasy team.

V-Jax could play this week

Email Post Email Post

Update: CBSsports.com is reporting that San Diego Chargers WR Vincent Jackson could play this week. Jackson has been on the field for only two plays this season after a contract dispute and then a suspension. Jackson injured his calf in week 12.

Fantasy Impact: Jackson's deep-threat abilities make him a must-start next week against the Kansas City Chiefs if he is healthy enough to play. Also, QB Phillip Rivers will probably come out of his slump, having only thrown one touchdown pass in the past two games.
