QB Clausen held out of practice

Email Post Email Post

Update: CBSsports.com is reporting that Carolina Panthers QB Jimmy Clausen missed practice Wednesday with a concussion. It is still unclear whether or not he will play next week. If he can't go, QB Tony Pike will get the start.

Fantasy Impact: It's been a dismal year for the Panthers who have been destroyed by injuries. At this point, the only players worth anything of fantasy value for the Panthers is WR Steve Smith and RB Jonathan Stewart. But since the team's first two quarterbacks are suffering from concussions, Smith's value will drop and should be consdered a low number three receiver or flex option in terms of fantasy value.

Agent: WR Rice will play in 2010

Email Post Email Post

Update: CBSsports.com is reporting that Minnesota Vikings WR Sidney Rice's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, says that Rice will play in the 2010 season. Rosenhaus also said that he hopes Rice will be healthy enough to play this week. Rice has missed all of training camp and this season after having hip surgery.

Fantasy Impact: This news contradicts previous reports that Rice will likely miss all of this season. However, Rosenhaus isn't that reliable of a source, so this can't be taken too seriously. For now, keep Rice on the bench and hope he can recover in time for fantasy playoffs.

RB Williams placed on IR

Email Post Email Post

Update: CBSsports.com is reporting that Carolina Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams has officially been placed on injured reserve, ending his season. Williams has been nursing a strained foot for the past several weeks. He was originally expected to miss only a few weeks, but the injury turned out to be more severe and thus was placed on IR.

Fantasy Impact: It's safe to say that Williams was officially a fantasy bust this season. Owners should drop him and pick up another running back like RB Reggie Bush is he is in free agency since he is expected back this week. Also, RB Jonathan Stewart will now get the majority of carries so his fantasy value is increased.

QB Henne misses practice, probably won’t play

Email Post Email Post

Update: ESPN.com is reporting that Miami Dolphins QB Chad Henne missed practice Wednesday with a knee injury. It was the team's only practice in preperation for Miami's Thursday night game against the Chicago Bears. QB Tyler Thigpen will most likely get the start in place of Henne.

Fantasy Impact: With Henne out, Miami will mos likely run the ball even more, giving RB Ronnie Brown and RB Ricky Williams added fantasy value. Thigpen hasn't started a game since 2008, so the Dolphins probably won't make him throw the ball much. Brown should be considered a high number two back in terms of fantasy value.

WR Cotchery likely out next week

Email Post Email Post

Update: ESPN.com is reporting that New York Jets WR Jerricho Cotchery missed practice Wednesday and is unlikely to play in week 11. Cotchery injured his groin last week while making a diving catch for a first down. Head Coach Rex Ryan won't rule Cotchery out just yet, stating that the injury isn't as severe as originally expected.

Fantasy Impact: While Cotchery made a spectacular play, his injury makes him almost worthless in terms of fantasy. That plus the fact that he's third on the depth chart behind WR Braylon Edwards and WR Santonio Holmes. Drop Cotchery and look for receiver help elsewhere.

Reggie Bush plans to play Sunday

Email Post Email Post

Update: ESPN.com is reporting that New Orleans Saints RB Reggie Bush expects to play on Sunday. Bush missed the past seven games due to a broken fibula. He originally wanted to come back in week nine, but the Saints held him out and gave him the bye week to rest up.

Fantasy Impact: The Saints have had little success on the ground since Bush and RB Pierre Thomas went down with injuries. With Bush bacck, it will allow the Saints to open up the playbook more and most likely get back to their old Super Bowl selves. He should be played as a number two back or flex option in fantasy leagues.

The Year Of the Point Guard

Email Post Email Post

We have years like this.

The NFL has had the year of the quarterback, or wide receiver. Baseball has had the year of the pitcher, and is actually going through an era of pitchers, and basketball might be going through a similar period:

The year of the point guard.

Think about it. Almost every team in this league that has a shot at a title, has a legit, skilled, or veteran point guard on their team; and if they don’t, then the point guard position is a specific  worry on the team.

This year is full of early point guard stories, and it will continue as the season progresses. Could we be watching a shift of powers? It used to be stated that the center position was the most important, and dominant, but is there a change of power happening before our eyes?

Possibly.

Portis Hopes To Play This Weekend

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Washington Post reports that Washington Redskins RB Clinton Portis hopes to play this week against the Titans. Portis said his chances of playing are 50-50 right now. Portis suffered a groin muscle tear seven weeks ago.

Fantasy Impact: Portis has played in 4 games this season, and he has not been very productive. He has rushed for 195 yards and 2 touchdowns. Even if he does play this weekend, he likely will not receive a full workload, meaning playing him in fantasy would not be wise. It may be worth picking him up off waivers if you are thin at running back, but do not start him this weekend.

Fasano Gets Extension

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Miami Dolphins have given TE Anthony Fasano a 2-year extension, worth $7.75 million, Jason La Canfora of NFL Network reports. The extension includes a $2.1 million signing bonus.

Fantasy Impact: Fasano has been reliable this season, catching 25 passes for 367 yards and 3 touchdowns. Although he is certainly not an elite tight end, he is serviceable and gets the job done.

Photo Story: A Bronc’s Tale – The Story of Josh McDaniels and his Fun-Loving Quarterback

Ever since I started doing these photo stories, like this one about benching Brett Favre and this one about Donovan McNabb’s new contract, I’ve been yearning to do one that involved Purdue alum and former Chicago Bear Kyle Orton. Why? This is why. Because even though we’ve all seen the multitudes of Kyle Orton hammered pictures plenty of times, they really never get old.

I decided that today would be the perfect time for the Orton photo story because: a) it gives me a chance to promote MSF Fantasy Sports since Orton is surprisingly among the top fantasy QBs this year; and b) because the Broncos play the Chargers on Monday night this week, meaning it was easy to weave the equally photogenic Philip Rivers into the proceedings.

And, well, poking fun at Josh McDaniels – the guy who traded Peyton Hillis for Brady Quinn – is pretty much always appropriate. (As for the inclusion of Matthew Berry – who, for the record, I read religiously and respect greatly as a fantasy analyst – well let’s just say that I stumbled upon some must-use pics of him, and his fantasy man-crush on Orton made this the perfect opportunity.)

So here is today’s photo story, which probably isn’t as good as the previous two from a narrative standpoint, but which is still special for me in it’s own right…thanks the incomparable Kyle Orton, every sophomoric sports blogger’s best friend.

Sanchez’s Calf Won’t Keep Him From Playing

Email Post Email Post

Update: New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez suffered a calf injury this past Sunday against the Browns but it was not bad enough to force him out of the game. Mike Mazzeo of ESPNNewYork.com reports that the injury will not keep him out this weekend either.

Fantasy Impact: The play of Sanchez from his rookie season to just his 2nd year has improved significantly. Through 9 games he has thrown for 1,991, yards, 12 touchdowns, and just 6 interceptions. He had 20 interceptions in 2009. Sanchez is no longer a weakness on the Jets roster, and his play at the end of games has been stellar.

Long Returns To Practice, Could Play

Email Post Email Post

Update: On Tuesday, Miami Dolphins LT Jake Long returned to practice, and head coach Tony Sparano said the Long might play this Thursday against the Bears. Long suffered a shoulder injury this past weekend and the injury was at first believed to have been serious. Long was limited in practice.

Fantasy Impact: Long is one the league's premiere left tackles, and opposing defenses always struggle to achieve success against him. If Long plays this Thursday he will be expected to slow down Julius Peppers. However, if he does not play, expect Peppers to be significantly more effective.

Rice Could Sit Out Entire Season

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Minnesota Tribune reports that Minnesota Vikings WR Sidney Rice could potentially sit out the entire season, as opposed to coming off the PUP list within the next 2 weeks. If Rice does not play this Sunday and the Vikings lose, the team will heavily consider shutting down Rice until next year. The Vikings play the Packers this weekend.

Fantasy Impact: At 3-6, playoff hopes are slim for the Vikings, and with a loss this weekend, the playoffs would be nearly impossible. If the Vikings do indeed lose this weekend, it would be best to shut down Rice for the remainder of the 2010 season. There is no point in risking further injury during meaningless games.

Packers, Vikings to determine futures in Week 11

Green Bay’s 28-24 victory over Minnesota at Lambeau Field on October 24 vaulted the Packers and sent the Vikings reeling.

Since then, the Packers have outscored their opponents 61-7. The offensive line seems to have overcome the penalty issues so prevalent early in the season, and questions about whether the Pack can overcome key injuries have been resolved. The bye week helped Green Bay heal some bumps and bruises, however new injuries have since popped up. Mark Tauscher has been placed in IR, and Ryan Pickett is listed as questionable.

The Vikings, on the other hand, have been in a tailspin.
