You may remember that last year I wrote about a 6th grader who was tearing up the youth football fields of Dallas, Texas. You also may have seen me tweeting about him the past few Monday nights now that he is a 7th grader and still running wild.
Now, before you start chastising me for unnecessarily promoting a kid who isn’t even in high school yet, understand something: he’s my little brother…so you’ll have to forgive me if I use our little corner of the blogosphere here to proudly give him some pub from time to time.
Plus, I know his moms – mine included – and sisters like seeing their boy’s name “in lights”, so I’m only too happy to oblige…when he’s taking care of business in the classroom, of course, and humbly offering thanks to his offensive linemen for clearing holes for him.
Since Bryce is now three games into his season, I figured I’d provide a quick update for those interested. Plus, I shot and edited a fun little commercial for him as a birthday present and it features a few of his AD-like scampers to the end zone.
First, here is the commercial. Obviously Gatorade has no official involvement here, but Bryce drinks it like it’s his job, so it was the perfect product for him to “endorse”.
Note: the song has a few not-so-clean words sprinkled throughout. If it were up to me, we would have used a little diddy from John Mellencamp as the background music, but Bryce and I don’t always see eye-to-eye when it comes to tunes.
As for how Bryce has done so far this season, it’s been mostly outstanding. His team, Huffines, won their first two games rather handily. While there are no official statistics kept, I would estimate, conservatively, that Bryce had 600+ yards on about 16 carries through the first two games. I believe he scored 7 times, with another long TD called back because of holding.
However, in their third game, Bryce learned a valuable lesson about what happens when a) the offensive line struggles to open up holes, b) the players on the other team are as big and fast as he is, and c) when the opposing team does a little big of scouting. (Plus, I don’t think their team really came in the right mindset to play.)
Their Week 3 opponent had Huffines’ favorite running plays snuffed out pretty well. Save for a couple of 10-12 yard gains, and one spectacular 30-yard jaunt, Bryce was bottled up pretty good. His team was shutout, their first loss of the season, and Bryce was held without a touchdown for the first time I can ever remember.
There is a good chance these two teams will meet up again come playoff time, so Bryce and the Huskies should have an opportunity to avenge the loss. Hopefully so, because they are a lot better than how they played Monday night.
