QB Troy Smith to start for 49ers

Email Post Email Post

Update: ESPN.com is reporting that the San Francisco 49ers have named QB Troy Smith as their starting QB for their game in London against the Denver Broncos. QB Alex Smith injured his shoulder last week and won't be able to play on Sunday. Smith won the job over QB David Carr who threw an interception last week that led to a game-winning field goal by the Carolina Panthers.

Fantasy Impact: Smith has done very little in his NFL career to this point, but now he may have an opportunity to win over the starter's job permanently depending on his performance. With QB Alex Smith playing inconsistently anyway Smith is in prime position to win the job. However, don't expect Smith to put up solid fantasy numbers so avoid him for now.

Viewer’s Guide: NFL Week 8 TV Schedule, Announcer Assignments, Matchups, and Teams on Bye

Email Post Email Post

Week 8 is the most truncated NFL schedule of the season as there are six teams on bye this week. However, there is not loss of compelling matchups.

The primetime games are outstanding. Indianapolis hosts Houston on Monday night while the Steelers-Saints game in New Orleans on Halloween night should be not only a compelling game, but also interesting TV because you just know the New Orleans folks will be excited to dress up in crazy outfits.

Other important games include the Vikings-Patriots, Dolphins-Bengals, and Packers-Jets.

The NBA Morning After: Opening Night Edition

lebron-heat-game-1

Welcome to the Morning After, a look at the night that was in the NBA and other NBA-related fodder.

– The Miami Heat’s patchwork lineup of unknowns fell to the well-seasoned Boston Celtics, 88-80, as notable-acquisition-not-named-Eddie-House LeBron James dropped a game-high 31 points on 10-for-21 shooting.

This was a sloppy game. Lots of the famous LeBron-on-five offense was on display from his Anakin Skywalker years in Cleveland, and the Heat simply could not make up for all their wasted possessions. Dwyane Wade did an awesome Cleveland Cavalier-Larry Hughes impression, finishing with 13 points on 16 shots, six assists and six turnovers.

Update: Sean McClelland of daytondailynews.com is reporting that the Cleveland Browns have released RB James Davis. Davis has been inactive for 3 of the last 4 games. The Browns added RB Thomas Clayton who claimed off waivers from the Patriots.

Fantasy Impact: Davis was only roster depth at the RB position for the Browns.

After a very hectic first couple of weeks for the Chicago Blackhawks, they’re finally getting some much-needed rest. The Blackhawks have played ten games in only 16 days. This stands as more games than any other team in the NHL, so it wasn’t surprising to see them show a little fatigue and drop their last two contests.

Costa Might Start For Cowboys

Email Post Email Post

Update: ESPNDallas.com is reporting that the Dallas Cowboys might be starting LG Phil Costa due to injuries. Starting LG Kyle Kosier has been ruled out and backup LG Montrae Holland has a groin injury. Costa was an undrafted free agent.

Fantasy Impact: Costa is inexperienced and even though he played well on Monday night expect teams to now target him. Its tough to see the Cowboys offense being successful with Costa protecting Kitna.

Seahawks Sign Quinton Ganther

Email Post Email Post

Update: Greg Johns of seattlepi.com is reporting that the Seattle Seahawks have signed FB Quinton Ganther. Their starting FB Michael Robinson is dealing with a sore hamstring and his status is unknown.

Fantasy Impact: Ganther is only insurance for Michael Robinson at this point. If Ganther is the starting FB expect it to hurt the Seattle running game.

Adam Jones Placed On IR

Email Post Email Post

Update: Joe Kay of Yahoo Sports is reporting that the Cincinnati Bengals have placed CB Adam Jones on IR with a herniated disk in his neck. Jones suffered the injury in last Sunday's game. He was starting for the injured CB Jonathan Joseph.

Fantasy Impact: This is a big loss for the Bengals. He was playing well and he will be hard to replace as the nickel corner. Jones returned a fumble for a TD on Sunday. The Bengals D is not playing well and should be avoided.

Mason Has Surgery

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Baltimore Sun is reporting that the Baltimore Ravens WR Derrick Mason had surgery on Monday to fix his broken right pinky finger. He is expected to play in week 9. The Ravens have a bye this week.

Fantasy Impact: It appears the injury is minor and he played with it last week. He is having the surgery now because the bye week will allow him to have an extra week to heal. Expect a strong performance from Mason in week 9.

Colts sign P Kapinos, DB Vaugn

Email Post Email Post

Update: NFL.com is reporting that the Indianapolis Colts have signed P Jeremy Kapinos and DB Chip Vaughn to replace P Pat McAfee and TE Dallas Clark (IR). McAfee was recently arrested for public intoxication and suspended by the Colts for a game, but the Colts aparently didn't think that was punishment enough.

Fantasy Impact: In terms of fantasy this news can be ignored since punters have no value, but it is interesting to see how quickly punters can be replaced. The Colts play the Houston Texans next week.

Broncos sign DE Smith

Email Post Email Post

Update: Yahoo! Sports is reporting that the Denver Broncos have signed DE Kevin Smith Tuesday. Smith was cut by the Broncos on September 7 after playing 10 games with the team in 2009 after being traded from New England. The Broncos cut LB Diryal Briggs to make room on the roster for Smith.

Fantasy Impact: The Broncos are looking to bounce back from a horrific blowout at the hands of the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. Smith will give the team added depth on the defensive line but don't expect him to be an every-down guy. This move can be ignored in terms of fantasy.
