A call for mandatory, immediate DUI suspensions

Have we lost all perspective?

In the aftermath of the Jets’ victory over the Dolphins last night – a victory they very well might not have achieved without the services of confirmed drunk driver Braylon Edwards – I have been both shocked and appalled at the way Edwards is being glorified. One example is this article by Gregg Doyel, whose myopic take here really disappointed me, but who also reminded me that Edwards is not the only player to recently get picked up for a DUI.

And let me state something right off the bat: this post has nothing to do with my personal, well-known disdain for Braylon Edwards, as you’ll soon see.

Perhaps my distaste for how this story is being covered has been more acute because I can’t stand Edwards, but the general idea of this post is not influenced by Braylon and his underachieving, megalomaniacal “New York essence” one bit. And I mean that. I wouldn’t address a topic of such gravitas if my underlying motivation were so petty.

Here’s the thing: Edwards isn’t the only player who should not have played last night. I don’t think Edwards nor Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown – another confirmed drunk driver, but whose transgression occurred during the offseason – should have been on the field last night; and Brown is one of my favorite NFL players, a guy whose jersey I own and proudly wear sometimes on gamedays.

Both Brown, a guy I like, and Edwards, a guy I loathe, should have been suspended for at least four games for their transgressions. That’s right. If Brian Cushing and others can be suspended for failing a test for performance-enhancing drugs, a crime against only the integrity of NFL competition, then Edwards and Brown should be suspended for just as long, if not moreso, for a crime again the integrity of human life.

Redskin Work Out Hunter Smith

Email Post Email Post

Update: Jason Reid of the Redskin Insider is reporting that the Washington Redskins are working out P Hunter Smith. Punter Josh Bidwell suffered a hip injury in yesterday's game. Smith played with the Redskins last year.

Fantasy Impact: This is only for roster depth. If your league plays with a Punter Smith becomes a very good option if signed.

49ers Fire Jimmy Raye

Email Post Email Post

Update: ESPN is reporting that the San Francisco 49ers have fired their offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye. The 49ers offense ranks 31st in points per game. Quarterbacks coach Mike Johnson was promoted to take over the role.

Fantasy Impact: The 49ers offense has been bad this year. Hopefully a new coordinator can jump start the offense. They need to find a way to get Crabtree and Vernon Davis more involved.

Haynesworth Played "All Right"

Email Post Email Post

Update: Jason Reid Of Redskin Insider is reporting that the Washington Redskins DL Albert Haynesworth said, "I played all right". He did not start but played mostly in the nickel package.

Fantasy Impact: The key here is that Haynesworth ankle felt fine and did not bother him during the game. He is still not in shape from missing all of the preseason. The Redskins need him to play well on defense for them to have any success this year.

Hoke Out 2 Weeks

Email Post Email Post

Update: Ed Bouchette and Gene Collier of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette are reporting that the Pittsburgh Steelers NT Chris Hoke sprained his MCL in the last few minutes of the game.

Fantasy Impact: Hoke is an important back up on the defensive line. Hoke started week 2 for the injured Casey Hampton. This leaves the Steelers with Hampton as the only healthy NT on the roster so expect a roster move later this week. The Steelers have a tough match up next week verse the Ravens.

Josh Morgan Injured Knee

Update: Mike Sando of ESPN is reporting that the San Francisco 49ers WR Josh Morgan left yesterday's game with an unknown knee injury. Morgan was held to 1 catch for 12 yards and a TD. The severity is still unknown.

Fantasy Impact: Morgan has become the number 1 WR on the 49ers. Teams have been double covering WR Michael Crabtree and TE Vernon Davis. This has left Morgan with plenty of opportunities. If Morgan can't play this will continue to keep Crabtree and Davis double covered.

Asomugha Shadowed Fitzgerald

Update: Jerry McDonald of InsideBayArea.com is reporting that the Oakland Raiders CB Nnamdi Asomugha shadowed Larry Fitzgerald all game. Fitzgerald was held to 2 receptions for 26 yards and a TD.

Fantasy Impact: In previous years the Raiders kept Asomugha on one side of the field. This year they are letting him cover the opponents top WR. This is going to be bad for a lot of top receivers. The Raiders play Houston next week and this could mean a down day for Andre Johnson.

Walter McFadden Aggravates Hamstring

Fantasy Football Week 4 Waiver Wire Steals at WR

Email Post Email Post

It dawned on me that we need to start posting our waiver wire advice columns earlier in the week.

Most leagues have a 24-72 hour waiver period at the beginning of each week when no transactions can be finalized, giving everyone a chance to claim every player. If our waiver wire guidance column comes out after that time period, most of the good players are already claimed.

So this week we’re fixing that and now you can spend some time scouring the waiver wire while watching tonight’s Monday night game to see if there is anyone you want to claim.

Fantasy Football Week 4 Start Em, Sit Em Lineup Advice

Email Post Email Post

Well, Week 3 was a lot like Week 1.

My top-line start ‘em, sit ‘em picks didn’t fare so well, but my secondary picks and Q&A recommendations were mostly solid.

Let’s hope this bad week followed by good week trend continues with the top-line choices in Week 4. I have a lot of making up to do to Joe Flacco and Mike Wallace owners…
