Burleson Hopes To Play

Email Post Email Post

Update: Dave Birkett a Free Press Sports Writer is reporting that the Detroit Lions WR Nate Burleson is hoping to play this week. He missed last week with a sprained ankle.

Fantasy Impact: Burleson should not be started even if he is healthy. He only has 2 catches for 23 yards on the season.

Aaron Brown Has Broken Hand

Update: Tom Kowalski of Mlive.com is reporting that the Detroit Lions RB Aaron Brown broke his hand in last Sunday's game. He will miss at least 4 weeks.

Fantasy Impact: The Lions have Best injured with turf toe and Brown out with a broken hand. This leaves the only healthy RB on the Lions as Kevin Smith. If he is available in your league consider adding him. There is a chance Best might not be able to play through his turf toe injury. Smith has had success and could find his way very soon into a starting role.

Best Has Turf Toe

Update: Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that the Detroit Lions RB Jahvid Best has a 2nd degree turf toe injury. He should be able to play on Sunday as long as the pain is not unbearable.

Fantasy Impact: The injury is a serious one but it looks like Best is able to play through it. We will learn a lot about his character this week if he is able to play well with the injury. With the way he has played this year Best is still a must start but is status need to be checked before Sunday's game.

Aromashodu Was a Healthy Scratch

Email Post Email Post

Update: Kevin Seifert of ESPN is reporting that the Chicago Bears WR Devin Aromashodu was a healthy scratch from last night's game. Coach Smith said the decision was "performance based" and was a "one-game decisions."

Fantasy Impact: Aromashodu is in the coach's doghouse. He had a good first week catching 5 passes for 71 yards but has not gotten on the field to produce. It looks like Earl Bennett took his starting spot. Aromashodu has a ton of talent but at this point feel free to cut him if there are better options available.

Seattle Mike Williams Suffers Shoulder Injury

Email Post Email Post

Update: Danny O'Neil of the Seattle Times is reporting that WR Mike Williams suffered a shoulder injury in this past Sunday's game. He left the game for a while but was able to return. Coach Carroll said, " Williams is real sore today".

Fantasy Impact: The injury isn't serious and Williams should be able to play on Sunday. Williams managed only 2 catches for 35 yards on Sunday. He should be started as a bye week fill in or in deeper leagues.

Dominique Curry Has Torn ACL

Update: Steve Korte of bnd.com is reporting that the St. Louis Rams WR Dominique Curry has a torn ACL. He was a top special teams player and he blocked a punt verse the Redskins.

Fantasy Impact: Curry was only a special teams player.

Steven Jackson Day to Day

Email Post Email Post

Update: Steve Korte of bnd.com is reporting that the St. Louis Rams RB Steven Jackson is day to day with a groin strain. The Rams will give Jackson an easy practice week and it looks like he will play Sunday.

Fantasy Impact: The injury to Jackson is not as severe as initially thought. He has a good match up this week verse the Seahawks.

Calvin Pace May Play This Week

Email Post Email Post

Update: Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com reports that New York Jets LB Calvin Pace may play this week. Head coach Rex Ryan said Pace is making progress, and if he can't play the full game, he may use him in certain situations. Pace is recovering from foot surgery.

Fantasy Impact: In 2009 Pace had 8 sacks. Pace is a fierce pass rusher and the Jets will certainly welcome him back. The Jets have a very good defense, but are better with Pace on the field.

Ray Rice Has Significant Knee Contusion

Email Post Email Post

Update: Baltimore Ravens RB Ray Rice left this past Sunday's game with a knee bruise, and the injury is serious enough to make his status for Week 4 unclear, the AP reports. Rice left the game with around 10 minutes left and did not return. On Monday head coach John Harbaugh said that an MRI revealed Rice has a significant contusion.

Fantasy Impact: Even if Rice is ready to play this week, it might be best to not start him in fantasy. Not only will he not be 100%, but he will be facing the tough Steelers defense. The Steelers are allowing just 59.7 yards per game on the ground, so Rice will not see many openings.

Jason McCourty Fractures Forearm

Email Post Email Post

Update: Tennessee Titans starting CB Jason McCourty suffered a fractured forearm during Sunday's win against the Giants, John Glennon and Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean report. The injury may force McCourty to have surgery on the forearm, but the team is not sure if surgery is necessary.

Fantasy Impact: Prior to getting injured, McCourty had 4 tackles and a big interception in the endzone that halted a good Giants drive. It is unknown how long McCourty will be out for, but while he is, rookie Alterraun Verner will take his spot in the starting lineup. Verner showed to have a nose for the football during training camp and the preseason, and the team feels very confident starting Verner.

Penalties Kill Packers Chance

Email Post Email Post

Update: On Monday night, the Green Bay Packers played well enough to beat the Chicago Bears. But they didn't, mostly just because of their own mistakes. With the game tied at 17, the Packers fumbled the ball with 2:18 left in the game. Green Bay also committed 18 penalties for 152 yards, including 2 penalties on the Bears last drive that negated 2 interceptions.

Fantasy Impact: Even after last night, the Packers still have a very good defense. They still force turnovers and sack the quarterback with intensity, so owners of the Packers defense/special teams in fantasy should not worry.

Fantasy Football Week 4 Player Rankings

Email Post Email Post

Now that the Packers-Bears game is in the books, we can officially turn our attention to Week 4 (which we did yesterday anyway by posting our Week 4 start/sit and Week 4 waiver wire columns).

You’ll notice a few surprises on the QB chart, most notably Bruce Gradkowski sneaking into the top 15 based on the strength of his matchup (Houston) and rapport with Louis Murphy, Zach Miller, and Darren McFadden out of the backfield.

At running back, there are a lot of important injuries to keep in an eye that will greatly affect Week 4, especially with the limited roster options caused by the bye weeks. I’ll update these rankings as more information is known about the Sunday statuses of Steven Jackson, Ray Rice, Jahvid Best, and others.

Bills cut Edwards

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Associated Press is reporting that the Bills have released quarterback Trent Edwards a week after losing the starting job for the second straight season. The team announced the move in a two-paragraph release Monday, just a day after new starter Ryan Fitzpatrick led the offense impressively in a 38-30 loss in New England. Edwards was Buffalo’s third-round pick in 2007 and went 14-18 as a starter, including 0-2 this year. Brian Brohm is the only quarterback, other than Fitzpatrick, currently on the Bills’ roster.

Fantasy Impact: This is certainly a surprise, especially given Fitzpatrick’s propensity for injuries and inconsistency. Edwards is one of those quarterbacks who I feel has not gotten a fair shake. He has all of the requisite tools to be a good starter at this level, evidenced mainly by 2008, his second season in the league, when the Bills were 7-7 with Edwards under center in spite of numerous problems throughout the rest of the organization, and Edwards completed 65.5% of his passes, while averaging nearly 200 passing yards per game and throwing 11 TD’s to 10 INT’s. After the season, Buffalo traded Pro Bowl left tackle Jason Peters but has failed to seriously address the position in the high rounds of the draft, in free agency, or the trade market since then. The organization has also had three head coaches and three offensive coordinators since then and has skimped on providing Edwards and the team’s other quarterbacks with talented weapons in the skill positions. Players they do acquire, like future Hall of Fame wide receiver Terrell Owens, are often shipped out or let go before they can become acclimated with their surroundings or the system. Fitzpatrick is now the clear-cut starter in western New York, and is in no danger of losing the job unless he gets injured, but it is pretty much a foregone conclusion that Buffalo will draft or trade for a quarterback in the offseason. Also, I guarantee that Trent Edwards has not gotten his last chance to be a starting quarterback in the NFL.
