RB Joseph Addai Suffers Concussion

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Associated Press is reporting that Indianapolis Colts running back Joseph Addai sustained a concussion during the team’s preseason game Thursday against the Green Bay Packers. Addai does not believe the injury is too serious, but instead stated that it felt like the wind got knocked out of him. The concussion occurred while Addai was making a tackle after a fumble by Peyton Manning.

Fantasy Impact: At this moment, it doesn’t look like Addai will miss any time because of this injury. However, depending on the grade of the concussion, this injury may have some lingering effects throughout the season. Running back Brian Westbrook suffered multiple concussions last season, injuries that made him miss significant time and some believed that it may have led to the end of his career. Especially with the NFL becoming more and more careful regarding head injuries, it should be interesting to see how the Colts address this situation.

Gore, Crabtree and Westbrook Will Play

Email Post Email Post

Update: Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com is reporting that the San Francisco 49ers will play RB Frank Gore, WR Michael Crabtree, and RB Brian Westbrook in their next preseason game Saturday verse the Raiders. This will be the first preseason game they play in.

Fantasy Impact: Its important for Gore and Crabtree to play. Gore will see a limited role and only play the first few series. Crabtree is recovering from a neck strain and will play the first quarter. Both players are primed for a big season. Westbrook is only considered the backup and should only be considered as a handcuff to Gore.

Brackett injures hand against Packers

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Associated Press is reporting that Colts middle linebacker Gary Brackett sustained a right hand injury late in the first quarter of Thursday night’s game against the Packers. Brackett was attempting to tackle Ryan Grant on a short gain and teammate Phillip Wheeler hit Brackett’s hand with his helmet as he made his contribution to the stop. More than a half-dozen trainers and Colts personnel surrounded Brackett, who left for the locker room a few minutes later with a towel wrapped over his right hand and forearm.

Fantasy Impact: If this is a broken hand or any sort of injury that will keep Brackett out of commission well into the regular season, the Colts are in trouble. Brackett is exceptional at stopping the run and has underrated pass coverage skills, but more importantly, he is to the defense what Peyton Manning is to the offense. He makes all the right pre-snap reads and calls and gets his defensive teammates in the proper position, serving a vital leadership role as defensive captain. With Brackett, the Colts are a middle of the road fantasy defense. Without him, their value drops significantly.

Hawthorne Has Sore Hip

Update: Greg Johns of Seattlepi.com is reporting that the Seattle Seahawks LB David Hawthorne has a hip problem and will miss the preseason game on Saturday. Will Herring will start instead.

Fantasy Impact: This has been bothering him for a while and he is a starting Linebacker. The Seattle defense is not very good and his not considered a starting fantasy defense

Urlacher Will Sit

Email Post Email Post

Update: Bearsheadquarters.com is reporting that the Chicago Bears LB Brian Urlacher will sit out Saturday's preseason game. He is recovering from a strained left calf.

Fantasy Impact: Urlacher would play if this were a regular season game. The bears still need to be worried because he is there best defensive player. The Bears defense should be avoided. They are not as good as they used to be and with 2 games each verse the Packers and Vikings makes there schedule tough.

Chris Cook Has Chance To Start

Email Post Email Post

Update: Tom Pelissero of 1500ESPN.com is reporting that Minnesota Vikings CB Chris Cook was moved from the left side to the right side CB on the Vikings depth chart. He is now competing with Lito Sheppard and Asher Allen instead of starter Antoine Winfield. Cook will be given every shot to win the job.

Fantasy Impact: This shows the Vikings aren't happy with veteran CB Lito Shepard. If Cook win the starting job it could lead to the Vikings giving up a few extra big plays due to his inexperience. The Vikings Defense is still a top fantasy defense.

Dez Bryant On Schedule

Email Post Email Post

Update: Dallasnews.com is reporting that Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant will be ready to play in the season opener verse the Washington Redskins. Bryant stated, "I know for a fact that I'm going to be ready for Washington."

Fantasy Impact: This is good news for Bryant as he is set to be the number 2 receiver on the Cowboys. Draft Bryant as if he will be ready for the Season opener.

10 Things I KNOW I Think About Fantasy Football in 2010

I really, really like and enjoy Peter King.

He writes one of the most widely read football columns in America, which may be the most widely read, but I don’t have the stats so I don’t know for sure. What I do know is that’s King’s Monday Morning Quarterback column is widely read with good reason, and I never miss one.

King, first and foremost, seems like a genuinely good and nice guy, and he is exceedingly likable. He is also a passionate football fan who relates well with his readers, is a competent writer, and is extremely well connected. When you have all of those attributes, plus you’ve been around for a while, you can provide useful NFL analysis and galvanize a pretty extensive reader base.

However, as a longtime Peter King reader, let me give you a word to the wise: take his fantasy advice with more than a few grains of salt.

Bradford shines but Rams lose Avery

Email Post Email Post

Update: It was a bittersweet victory for the St. Louis Rams in they're game against the New England Patriots on Thursday. QB Sam Bradford went 15-22 for 189 yards and two TD's in just one half but WR Donnie Avery was carted off the field after he banged his knee against the ground going for a pass.

Fantasy Impact: Bradford continues to impress with every outing but Avery's possibly serious knee injury could slow down his steady improvement. However, OTs Jason Smith and Roger Saffold did a good job protecting Bradford and making sure he had the time he needed.

Dixon’s performance on Sunday likely to determine whether or not he starts in Ben’s absence

Email Post Email Post

Update: The team’s official website is reporting that Steelers third-year quarterback Dennis Dixon will start Sunday’s preseason game against the Broncos. Said head coach Mike Tomlin: “I intend to give Dennis some looks with the first group against some good people. I think he’s earned that. And that’s what this preseason is about.” Dixon has been lighting it up through the Steelers’ first two preseason games, going 13 of 15 for 210 yards, 1 TD, and no turnovers, albeit against backups.

Fantasy impact: Simply put, if Dixon plays well Sunday, he will start September 12 against the Falcons. Byron Leftwich has been decent so far in preseason, but the organization would prefer to start Dixon in Ben Roethlisberger’s absence, given his age in comparison to Leftwich’s, and his feet and throwing release being quicker than Leftwich’s, thereby making him better equipped to play behind an offensive line that is still in transition. Pay attention to Dixon’s performance on Sunday and, perhaps more importantly, to the feedback Coach Tomlin gives, because that will determine whether a decent no.2 QB option for the four to six weeks of Roethlisberger’s suspension will be Dixon or Leftwich.

Franklin to end holdout, sign tender Saturday

Email Post Email Post

Update: NFL.com’s Jason LaCanfora is reporting that 49ers nose tackle Aubrayo Franklin will sign his franchise tender and report to the team on Saturday. Franklin will earn $7 million this season under the franchise tag as he continues to work towards receiving a long-term deal.

Fantasy Impact: A dominant nose tackle is key to any 3-4 defense, especially when playing for a defensive-minded head coach like Mike Singletary on a team without a proven, dependable quarterback. Franklin certainly fits the bill, having started every game last season, while racking up 36 tackles, 2 sacks, defending 3 passes, and intercepting another. The motivation of a player seeking a long-term deal cannot be ignored either. I say with a unit that features Franklin, arguably the league’s best linebacker in Patrick Willis, and an improving secondary in a division that doesn’t feature any scary, high-powered offenses, make the Niners’ D one of the first five to eight units to come off the board in your draft.

O’Hara to miss rest of preseason and possibly more

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Associated Press is reporting that Giants center Shaun O’Hara’s preseason has been officially ended with Achilles tendinitis. Doctors put O’Hara’s foot in a hard cast Thursday. Said O’Hara: “It’s just something I’ve been dealing with pretty much all through camp. I’ve had some good days and I’ve had some bad days. It’s been something we’ve been kind of coping with and working through. It’s reached the point where we decided we need to just try to isolate it and give it some complete and total rest.” O’Hara said he hoped the rest will enable him to play the September 12 season opener against the Panthers, but the team is working left guard Rich Seubert at center just in case. Said Seubert: “Whatever they want me to do. I’ve played center in practice ever since rookie year. I’ve always taken snaps. In this business, the more you can do the better off you’ll be. I feel comfortable at center.”

Fantasy Impact: O’Hara is one of the team leaders and one of the toughest and most technically sound interior linemen in the game and so the Giants would certainly take a hit from a knowledge and morale standpoint if he were to miss a significant period of time. However, to say that it would ruin the offensive line’s chances to rebound from last year’s sub-par performance is untrue. In fact, in some ways it might be better for Seubert to start at center and start a young guy like Will Beatty at tackle. O’Hara is still good and he’s still a team leader, but he is getting older and showed some signs of his age in 2009. Seubert is about the same age, but he is somewhat fresher from having spent a few years as a backup during the middle of his career, is not dealing with a major medical condition like Achilles tendinitis, and is very familiar with, obviously, the system, as well as the line calls and intricacies of the center position. Starting second-year player Will Beatty at tackle would inject some of the fresh, hard-hitting, quick-footed stability upfront that helped the team achieve so much success over the past few years. The news about O’Hara doesn’t lead me to have any change of mind about the Giants’ skill-position players in fantasy. I still like Eli Manning as a top ten QB, I still like Steve Smith and Hakeem Nicks, as well as Mario Manningham as a no.3 or no.4 WR and Kevin Boss as a starting tight end, but I don’t trust Big Blue’s RB’s enough to use a high pick on any of them.

Anderson to start for Cards

Email Post Email Post

Update: Yahoo! Sports is reporting that QB Derek Anderson will get the start for the Arizona Cardinals against the Chicago Bears on Thursday. Anderson and QB Matt Leinart have been battling for the starting QB role on Arizona's roster.

Fantasy Impact: This is bad news for Leinart, who in last week's game couldn't record a first down with the Cards' first team offense. He said after the game that it's just the preseason and that he wasn't worried, but he will be if Anderson plays well enough.
