Michael Bush Breaks Thumb

Email Post Email Post

Update: Jerry McDonald of InsideBayArea.com reports that Oakland Raiders RB Michael Bush fractured a thumb on Saturday. It is unknown how severe the injury is, and Bush is expected to see a hand specialist soon.

Fantasy Impact: The impact of this injury depends on how long Bush will be out. If he misses very little time, the Bush's draft status in fantasy leagues won't be effected. However, if Bush misses several weeks, that would give Darren McFadden an opportunity to establish himself as the number 1 guy in Oakland and improve his stock in fantasy football.

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Hampton Hotels. All opinions are 100% mine.

What would you do if you had control of an entire hotel for a weekend? That’s right, I’m talking about 100 rooms, all to yourself and your friends, for two nights. What would you do?

Well, if you enter the Hampton Chain of Friends Sweepstakes and win, that is a decision that you’ll have to make, because the grand prize is exactly that: 100 rooms, all to yourself and your friends, for a full weekend.

Personally? I’d plan a kickass weekend of sports somewhere and take 100 MSF readers. Final Four? Spring Training? Final weekend of a Major? The possibilities are endless.

Calvin Pace Out Six Weeks

Email Post Email Post

Update: Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that New York Jets OLB Calvin Pace will miss 6 weeks with a broken foot. Pace broke his foot in the team's preseason game on Friday. He will not be ready for the start of the regular season.

Fantasy Impact: In 2009, Pace was very solid, recording 8 sacks as a pass-rusher off the edge. But if one team can afford to lose a good defensive player, it is the Jets. Jason Taylor will likely replace Pace in the starting lineup, so the drop-off between the 2 should not be very noticeable.

Shame on protesters, not Pujols, for actions Saturday

Unfortunately, some St. Louis fans could not accept Albert Pujols receiving this much-deserved award, and instead renounced their slugger and skipper.  Nor could “mainstream” news outlets which displayed their intolerance herehere, and here, and will waste more ink in the days to come no doubt.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, about 30 people gathered Saturday outside Busch Stadium to speak against Tony La Russa and Pujols attending the rally in our Nation’s Capital.

One man carried a sign that said “I had a dream baseball wasn’t political.” He added, “I’m fed up that politics has to invade every aspect our lives.”

Sir, for better or worse, LIFE is political. And it has always intersected with sports, though not nearly to the degree of Hollywood, where politics are predominantly one-sided. While sports may be more balanced, the first political shots in baseball were fired many times earlier this year.

Jamaal Charles Is Fine

Update: Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles "landed awkwardly on his funny bone last night and is fine." Charles left last night's game early.

Fantasy Impact: The injury isn't serious and there is nothing to worry about. It appeared initially that the injury was severe since he did not go back out and play. Charles is poised for a breakout year.

Pace Has A Foot Injury

Email Post Email Post

Update: Tim Graham of ESPN is reporting that New York Jets LB Calvin Pace suffered a foot injury during Friday's preseason game. He is expected to miss a few weeks, which means he most likely won't be ready for the season opener. Jason Taylor will start in his place

Fantasy Impact: The Jets don't really know how long he will be out. Pace is a playmaker and the Jets defense will miss him. As long as Pace only misses a game or two the Jets defense is still considered the top fantasy defense.

As you know, I am a proud participant in this year’s Blogger Fantasy Football League, sponsored by P&G and hosted on the new NFL.com fantasy platform. We got to draft in the NFL offices, the league winner gets an all expense paid trip to this year’s Super Bowl, and each of us represents a specific P&G brand, with MSF proudly repping Head & Shoulders.

So when I heard about H&S’s new promotion with Troy Polamalu, and eight other memorably coifed NFL legends, I was only too happy to share the news.

Besides, this being a Midwest sports blog, how can we not promote something that features the iconic Jim McMahon?

Unjustly Obscure Player of the Week: Mike Bordick

Email Post Email Post
mike-bordick

Hopefully some of you watched the first game this season between The Yankees and Red Sox. If you did, you saw an absolutely classic moment in the young career of Brett Gardner, and a horribly depressing moment for me as a baseball fan.

I actually like Gardner. He’s the kind of player every team could use more of. Great defensively, insane amounts of the oft-hailed DISRUPTIVE SPEED, plus the ability to actually get on base and use it (Rajai Davis and Willy Tavaras cry manly tears at this fact). He just didn’t have to steal home on Opening Day is all. What a jerk.

Until Gardner ruined all my fun, Mike Bordick was the last man to ever steal home on Opening Day.

Jackson prepared to sit out season

Email Post Email Post

Update: NFL.com’s Megan King is reporting that Chargers wide receiver Vincent Jackson said Friday that he is prepared to sit out the entire 2010 season if the Chargers do not either give him the contract extension he wants or trade him. Said Jackson: “I’ve been financially smart, taking care of things like that off the field, so I’m ready for the long haul, but, again, I miss football. I want to play football, I’m passionate about the game. I wouldn’t be out here training, working as hard as I am if I didn’t want to be on the field.” Last weekend, the Chargers placed Jackson on the roster exempt list, meaning he can’t play for three games after the date he signs and reports to the team. Jackson has also been suspended by the NFL for the first three games for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy, and there is a question as to whether or not he can serve the sentences concurrently.

Fantasy Impact: Knowing Chargers general manager A.J. Smith and the way he refuses to give in to his players’ demands, I would say it is almost certain that Jackson has played his last game in a Chargers uniform and it is almost as likely that he will not play at all in the NFL in 2010. Smith has been steadfast in asserting that he expects his players to fulfill their contracts and I do not see him trading arguably his biggest offensive weapon so that Jackson can get a big extension from another team and net the Chargers a 1st or 2nd round pick in return that will likely not result in proper compensation in the big picture. I also don’t see him ponying up big bucks to Jackson in the last couple weeks before the season starts after letting this saga drag out throughout the offseason and undoubtedly cause bad blood between the two sides. If Jackson does happen to get traded, jump all over him if you get a chance to acquire him in fantasy because there is something about the way A.J. Smith discards his veteran players that makes them motivated for superstardom with the next team they play for (see Drew Brees or look at the way LaDainian Tomlinson has played thus far in preseason) and any team that would trade for him (i.e. Seattle or Washington) would be one that already has an established quarterback.

Hartwig concerned about future with Steelers

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is reporting that the reps rookie center Maurkice Pouncey has taken with the first-team offense have left veteran incumbent Justin Hartwig concerned about his future with the organization. “Absolutely,” Hartwig said. “Those are the things you think about when you’re starting and, all of a sudden, you got another guy playing in front of you. Obviously, you think about your future.” Hartwig has started every game for the Steelers over the past two years and is scheduled to make $2.08 million this season after signing a four-year extension in 2009. Pouncey was the eighteenth overall pick in this year’s draft and began training camp as the starting right guard before head coach Mike Tomlin decided to get him in the mix for the starting center spot.

Fantasy Impact: I wouldn’t read too much into this, because Hartwig was able to earn the starting job two years ago even though Sean Mahan was the starter entering training camp and there is enough uncertainty along Pittsburgh’s offensive line that Hartwig and Pouncey should both be able to earn starting jobs. However, if Tomlin decides that Pouncey is the guy he’d rather have at center and Hartwig doesn’t want to relinquish his spot as anchor of the offensive line, you could see an ugly riff develop between Hartwig and the Steelers, that could possibly result in a trade. Any potential partner could land themselves a front-line interior lineman if Hartwig were to get dealt.

Leinart questions decision to bench him

Email Post Email Post

Update: The team’s official website is reporting that Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart made some interesting comments when asked about his recent demotion from starter to backup, in favor of Derek Anderson. Said Leinart: “It is frustrating. I am not sure of the expectation put on me. I have high expectations on myself, and I think, based on my body of work in the preseason, I have been accurate and not turned the ball over. I think the preseason is about gelling together as an offense. We have a lot of new faces on the offense. When you don’t move the ball, it’s not what you want, but that is what preseason is for. To gel together as an offense…I have done everything coach has asked of me. I have been committed and I have worked extremely hard. If it is an open competition, then let’s have it that way from the start, if this is what this is…I am extremely disappointed, and I’m not exactly sure why this decision was made, but it’s not my decision.”

Fantasy Impact: This is a microcosm of why Matt Leinart has not become a franchise quarterback through his first four seasons in the league. He is too stubbornly satisfied with his own performance to improve from week-to-week and he blames everyone but himself for his struggles. He lauds his own accuracy, and 10 of 13 through the first two preseason games is an impressive mark, but he also underthrew one of his secondary receivers who had a step on his man in the game Monday night against the Titans, and afterwards yelled “Find the ball!” It’s not exactly the kind of leadership and accountability you want from your starting quarterback. It’s certainly not something I ever saw Kurt Warner doing. Furthermore, Leinart’s 10 completions have only netted 77 yards, as he has been too willing to accept checkdowns and rely on his skill-position players to get yards after the catch rather than push the ball down the field as Warner did consistently. The bottom line is that the Cardinals have not been scoring points with Leinart under center, but rather than note the flaws in his performance, particularly his inability to pick up blitzes, he gets defensive and blames others as if he’s running a political campaign. Perhaps most shameful is that he claims the quarterback competition isn’t an open one, as if it would benefit the coaching staff and the team as a whole to have Leinart starting the first two preseason games if they planned on starting Anderson opening day anyway. Honestly, Anderson doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence either but it seems like Leinart is bending over backwards to lose his shot at a starting job. I would deem Anderson the more valuable Arizona quarterback of the two.

And when I say “greatest” I mean absolutely the worst, most awful individual decision in the history of pigskin toting.

The letters w, t, and f, placed together, even when capitalized and followed by exclamation points, do not do this play justice.

Just watch, enjoy, and please reserve your inevitable knee-jerk Cleveland Browns jokes for the comment section.

Keep an eye on Seahawks’ Williams

Email Post Email Post

Update: Seahawks wide receiver Mike Williams, a former tenth overall pick of the Detroit Lions, is working hard to transition himself from bust to key contributor under the direction of his former college coach Pete Carroll. Williams earned a free agent contract after an impressive minicamp tryout and his stock within the Seahawks has risen throughout the offseason with diligent work, much improved stamina, and reporting to training camp at a solid 235 pounds to dispel concerns about his weight that had followed him through his previous NFL destinations. Williams has let his newfound pride in his profession translate to on-field performance through the first two preseason games, contributing a 51-yard catch and run for a touchdown against the Titans and catching four balls for 44 yards against the Packers and their 2nd-ranked defense from last year.

Fantasy Impact: Mike Williams is the ultimate fantasy sleeper. Not only has he been written off as a bust, he was written off at least four years ago and hasn’t even been in the league the past two seasons. If you were to want to use a late-round pick on him or claim him off the waiver wire, I can all but guarantee that no one in your league would challenge you for him. With Williams’ freakish athletic ability and 6-foot-5 frame, he will be a consistent target for quarterback Matt Hasselbeck over the middle and especially in the red zone. The diminutive size of other Seahawks wideouts like Deion Branch and Golden Tate makes it likely that Williams will spend most, if not all, of the season as a starter in Seattle. Don’t be afraid to pick him up.
