Bailey could get extension

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to the Denver Post, Champ Bailey could be the next Broncos veteran to net a long-term contract extension.

Fantasy Impact:  Bailey is an aging veteran, and shouldn't be expecting more than a two year deal.

Hemby to miss season

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post, rookie cornerback Jordan Hemby will miss the 2010 season with a torn ACL.

Fantasy Impact:  Hemby was undrafted and did not really have a chance of making this team anyway.

Maclin’s injury not serious

Email Post Email Post

Update: X-rays on Philadelphia Eagles wideout Jeremy Maclin's injured shoulder have come back negative, according to Pro Football Talk.

Fantasy Impact:  This is good news for the Eagles and fantasy owners who are relying on Maclin to be a major player this season.

Skins happy with Devin Thomas

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to the Washington Post, it would not be surprising if Devin Thomas begins to climb the depth chart. There is belief that that Thomas could be a starter.

Fantasy Impact:  Thomas has yet to make an impact for the Skins although they were hoping for big things from him.  He is in competition with Joey Galloway for playing time.

Seattle courting Vincent Jackson

Email Post Email Post

Update: The San Diego Chargers have granted the Seahawks permission to discuss contract terms with unsigned wide receiver Vincent Jackson. Sources have reported that the Chargers are now committed to dealing Jackson.

Fantasy Impact:  With Deion Branch not performing, and T.J. Houshmandzadeh not living up to the hype so far, the Seahawks are in need of a playmaker.

LeBron James continues to be disliked

In case you were wondering whether Clevelanders’ icy feelings towards LeBron James were beginning to thaw…they aren’t.

As proof, I offer the following video (and an obligatory NSFW disclaimer), which features comedian Mike Polk, his guitar, a terrific mustache, and a “tribute” song to LeBron James.

Notre Dame 2010 Preview: Three Keys for the Offense

Email Post Email Post
dayne-crist-notre-dame

Fall practice is under way, and expectations are already bordering on unreasonable. Yes, it’s football season again in South Bend.

This year the Fighting Irish have a new head coach in Brian Kelly, and supposedly a fresh attitude to go along with him. It’s always difficult to deduce any real meaning from sound bytes following a coaching change, as it’s usually the same old “new attitude” stuff followed by random quotes about “practicing harder than ever.”

Ultimately, time will tell on the Brian Kelly era; but, for the record, early reviews have been nothing but positive.

Coach Kelly has a tough task ahead of him this season. After back-to-back years of underachieving under Charlie Weis, Notre Dame fans and players are hungry for a winner. In typical fashion, the biggest keys for the Irish this season also are the biggest question marks for this team.

Here are three keys for the Irish offense in 2010:

Charlie Frye Placed On IR

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Oakland Raiders have placed QB Charlie Frye on injured reserve, Jerry McDonald of the Oakland Tribune reports. Frye underwent wrist surgery recently and will have to miss the entire 2010 season.

Fantasy Impact: Losing Frye for the season is not very detrimental to the Raiders. He was currently 3rd on the depth chart and there was no way he would start without a couple of injuries. The Raiders will move on without Frye.

Orton Gets Extension

Email Post Email Post

Update: ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the Denver Broncos have give QB Kyle Orton a 1-year/$9 million extension, with $5.5 million guaranteed. Orton signed a 1-year/$2.62 million tender in the off-season.

Fantasy Impact: Along with the extension, it appears the Orton may be getting a little job security also. Many feel that Tim Tebow would take over as the starting QB at some point this season, but that seems less likely now. Although Tebow will still see playing time in special packages, Orton has to feel more comfortable about his starting gig.

Bulluck, Phillips To Play On Saturday

Email Post Email Post

Update: The New York Giants will have 2 players make their preseason debuts on Saturday, Zach Berman of The Star-Ledger reports. LB Keith Bulluck and S Kenny Phillips will see their first action of the preseason, but it is unknown how many snaps they will play. Both players are coming off of knee injuries in 2009.

Fantasy Impact: When healthy, both players will start for the Giants defense. Bulluck is expected to slide into the middle linebacker position. He will provide great awareness and speed to the ball. Phillips would retain his starting strong safety spot and would give the Giants a play-maker and a ball hawk in the secondary.

Bernard Pollard Ready For Colts

Email Post Email Post

Update: Paul Kuharsky of ESPN reports that Houston Texans S Bernard Pollard is ready for the Colts. The Texans are 1-15 all-time against the Colts, but Pollard is ready to punch back. He said, "It’s our turn to step up. We’ve been getting punched by them and we haven’t punched back. We’ve been on top but lost the fight. But this year is a new year…" The Texans and Colts open up the regular season against each other in Houston.

Fantasy Impact: After being released by the Chiefs prior to the 2009 season, Pollard went on to sign with the Texans and had a fantastic season. He ended up with 102 tackles, 7 pass deflections, 1.5 sacks, and 4 interceptions, including 1 touchdown. If Pollard is serious about beating the Colts, he will have to continue his aggressive play.

Feeley To Start Again

Email Post Email Post

Update: Gregg Rosenthal of ProFootballTalk.com reports that the St. Louis Rams will start QB A.J. Feeley again in their next preseason game. Head coach Steve Spagnuolo said he will give Sam Bradford a few more plays, but he feels comfortable with Feeley starting for now.

Fantasy Impact: The starter for the regular season has not been decided yet, but this shows that Spagnuolo is leaning towards Feeley right now. However, if Bradford outplays Feeley on Saturday, the order of the depth chart will likely change.

Mike Thomas Impressing Jaguars

Email Post Email Post

Update: Jacksonville Jaguars WR Mike Thomas has solidified the number 2 WR spot for the Jaguars, but he may be pushing for the number 1 spot, Florida Times-Union reports. Thomas has played well in training camp and has often outplayed number 1 receiver Mike Sims-Walker.

Fantasy Impact: Thomas could be a late round sleeper in fantasy leagues this year. Sims-Walker has been injury prone and inconsistent, so this could be Thomas' chance to break out and see significantly more opportunities. Last year as a rookie he caught 48 passes for 453 yards and 1 touchdown, but those numbers should all increase this season. It's worth picking Thomas late in fantasy drafts where he should be available.
