Word broke this morning that legendary Yankees owner George Steinbrenner passed away as a result of a “massive” heart attack.
Undoubtedly, tribute posts will be published all day around the web from people with a much greater perspective on Steinbrenner’s legacy than I have. I will leave the heavy lifting to these folks.
What I will say about Steinbrenner is this: though I sometimes hated his money, and though he was far from a saint, and though I probably would have hated working for him…even the most ardent Steinbrenner critic had to appreciate and respect his unyielding passion for winning.
In an era when many sports owners are more concerned about pinching pennies than winning titles, George Steinbrenner spared no expense nor effort to rebuild and maintain the greatness of America’s most successful sports franchise.
So we Yankee haters can say whatever we want; the truth is, we’d all have loved Steinbrenner if he was ours and The Boss leaves behind a legacy that is truly one of a kind.
If I were to say any more, I would be stepping outside the bounds of what I’m qualified to say about Steinbrenner, his history with the Yankees, and the historical context into which his achievements as an owner will be placed.
So in lieu of that, I’ll pay tribute to Steinbrenner in the only other way I know how: by embedding YouTube videos of The Boss on Seinfeld, his other contribution to pop culture.
The real George Steinbrenner makes cameo on Seinfeld

George Steinbrenner reminisces about all the people he’s “let go”
George Steinbrenner gets lambasted by Mr. Costanzo for giving Hideki Irabu too much money

And here are a few others for which embedding is disabled:
- George Steinbrenner informs George Costanza’s parents about his “death”
- Larry David as George Steinbrenner Part 1
- Larry David as George Steinbrenner Part 2
If there are others that I’ve missed, and you can find the embed code, drop a note in the comments section and I’ll add it to this post.
Today will be a day of tributes and remembrances for George Steinbrenner, and with good reason. Despite all of the rough edges, he was what an owner should be above all else: dedicated to winning.
Rest in peace, Boss.
