Owens won’t join the Rams

Email Post Email Post

Update: Sources had told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen that the St. Louis Rams also were interested in signing Owens, however the team decided Monday against adding Owens, sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Fantasy Impact:  Owens appears to also have an offer from the Bengals on the table, and it should be interesting to see if he ends up joining the Bengals and his friend Chad Ochocinco.

The Decision (“Jerod Picks a New NBA Team Edition”)

Growing up, I was always loved college basketball and merely just liked the NBA; I did, however, grow to become a pretty big Bulls fan.

I lived in Bloomington, the Pacers weren’t all that great until I got to high school, and Michael Jordan was the most exciting single phenomenon I’d ever seen. Plus, being a Bulls fan was awesome because they were, of course, the best.

Once MJ retired and the Bulls dynasty ended though, my NBA cheering preferences rotated. I cheered pretty hard for the Bullets (then the Wizards) for a while because IU legend Calbert Cheaney played there, and obviously MJ eventually did too.

Then when I lived in Miami I got into the Heat because Dwyane Wade was exciting, I got to go to some games, and they won a title. Then when I moved from Miami and the Heat started to suck I got more into the Cavs because of LeBron. But after LeBron quit on the Cavs during and after the playoffs, I was once again left with an NBA void.

Well, that voids needs to be filled and I’m here to announce my decision for who my new NBA rooting interest will be, and why.

Peterson will report to camp

Email Post Email Post

Update: Although he wanted a new contract, Vikings running back Adrian Peterson said Sunday that he will report to training camp on time. Peterson "seemed somewhat annoyed" about the rumors he's disgruntled or in search of a raise.

Fantasy Impact: Peterson is making almost $7M this season so it is not like he is hurting for money.  Do not expect him to miss camp.

Hardesty signs with Browns

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Cleveland Browns have agreed to terms with second-round running back Montario Hardesty on a four-year contract.  Hardesty has looked very good so far in offseason workouts.

Fantasy Impact:  Hardesty will fight Jerome Harrison throughout training camp for the starting gig.

Pats working on deal with Brady

Email Post Email Post

Update: ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the Patriots and Tom Brady are making enough progress in contract talks that Brady could have an extension in place by the end of the summer.

Fantasy Impact:  The collective bargaining agreement status is most likely going to make this deal much more difficult than it needs to be.  Brady will apparently report to camp even though a deal is not worked out at this point.

Sense-of-Humor-demotivational-poster-lance-armstrong-tiger-woods

Earlier today while making my morning perusal of Reddit, I came across this picture.

Even if you only follow sports peripherally – hell, even if you just follow pop culture – I’m sure you can appreciate the appropriate chuckle-to-yourself juxtaposition of these two books.

Immediately I knew that this image would provide the raw material from whence my first demotivational poster would emanate. [Read more...]

Joe Namath: The Most Overrated Quarterback Ever

Email Post Email Post

Let’s play a game: I am going to give you two quarterbacks from the mid 60s to the late 70s and I want you to guess which one is the Hall of Fame QB.

Player A. Career Stats:  19 Seasons, 145 Starts, 183 TD, 187 INT, 27,908 Passing Yards, 81-62-1 Career Record, 54.2 Completion Percentage, 73.5 QB Rating, Lost 2 Super Bowls,

Player B. Career Stats: 13 Seasons, 130 Starts, 173 TD, 220 INT, 27,663 Passing Yards, 62-63-4 Career Record, 50.1 Completion Percentage, 65.5 QB Rating, Won 1 Super Bowl,

Neither is probably jumping out at you. In fact, neither of the QB’s probably seem like Hall of Fame material, but I promise one is.

If I had to guess just by looking at the info above, I would have to go with Player A. More wins, better TD/INT ratio, better completion percentage, and better QB ranking. The only down side is he lost two Super Bowls whereas Player B won a Super Bowl.

I think any reasonable football fan would agree that Player A seems like a more deserving Hall choice.

Now let’s find out if we’re right.

  • Player A. Craig Morton
  • Player B. Joe Namath

Wow.

2010 a Pivotal Year for Matt Forte

Email Post Email Post

A lot of people will be looking at the Chicago Bears this year.

They will be looking at how Jay Cutler performs in his second year. They will be looking at Mike Martz and whether his new offensive scheme will work. And, of course, they will be looking at whether or not the Bears make the playoffs.

While those are all valid questions that will soon be answered in this upcoming NFL season, there is another person who all Bears observers should be looking at as well: Matt Forte.

After a solid rookie year and then last year’s struggles, Forte’s third year is critical for himself and the team.

dad-in-colorado

Yeah, yeah, I know. This is Midwest Sports Fans. Where do we get off writing about the Rocky Mountains, right?

Well, when my dad, who is currently in Colorado, sends me awesome pictures like the ones he sent me this morning, I can’t help but share them.

I miss Colorado. What a wonderful, beautiful, majestic place. I need to get back, and if you’ve never been, you need to go. Nothing has ever taken my breath away like the things I’ve seen hiking in the Rockies.

This may seem completely insignificant…and it is…but I guarantee you the picture below will give the entire city of Bloomington, and Hoosiers scattered everywhere, a very pleasant wet dream.

It feels like forever since we’ve seen a great player wearing the cream & crimson (the last was Eric Gordon, but only for one year; the next will be Maurice Creek, write it down), but thanks to this twitpic by the official NBA twitter account, via our good friends at Inside the Hall, we can all enjoy the following momentary fantasy today.

Dixon’s agent criticizes Steelers

Email Post Email Post

Update: Dennis Dixon’s agent, Jeff Sperbeck, told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that he is unhappy with the lack of first-team reps that his client took during OTA’s and wonders why Dixon is now behind Byron Leftwich on the depth chart. “I don’t understand why after Byron’s been gone a year, they would bring him back and start him ahead of Dennis,” said Sperbeck. “To me, it should have been Dennis’ job as the no. 1. He was no. 2 last year. Byron was not even in the picture…When you bestow confidence in him that he is the guy, now the team knows that and they are prepared to follow him. Without the team giving that to him, it’s more difficult for any quarterback to lead when your own status is uncertain. You lead differently as a starter than you do as a backup.”

Fantasy Impact: First of all, I’ve never heard of Jeff Sperbeck before and I don’t know who his other clients are if any, but he’s a fool. No one gives you anything in the NFL. If Byron Leftwich is atop the Steelers’ quarterback depth chart, it’s because he has proven thus far to be the best quarterback on the Steelers roster not named Ben Roethlisberger. Sperbeck isn’t doing himself or Dixon any favors in their relationship with the Steelers, and if there’s any athletes who were considering hiring Sperbeck and have read this article, they can safely cross his name off the list of potential agents…Sorry, I had to get that off my chest. On to the impact: I still think Dixon will be the starter Week 1, but on the other hand, Leftwich was successfully in orchestrating Bruce Aryan’s offense in limited opportunities two years ago, and deserves as much a chance as anybody to play. Stay tuned to training camp and preseason updates, but if your draft starts too soon for that, and you’re desperate for a Steelers quarterback to insert into your lineup for the first six weeks, make it Dixon.

It just got uglier between Reed and Ravens

Email Post Email Post

Update: Following All-Pro safety Ed Reed questioning how well he’s been treated by the Ravens organization and speaking of “minor disagreements” he’s had with the Ravens, Reed spoke specifically of being denied game film which he requested a couple weeks ago according to baltimoreravens.com. Ravens Senior Vice President of Public and Community Relations Kevin Byrne responded: “If this happened, it had to be a misunderstanding of some sort. We know Ed is a great student of the game and studies video all the time.” Reed said he has a text message to prove his claims and went on to say, “Don’t treat me like that after I gave my blood, sweat and tears for this guy-for this organization. I train my tail off. I’m putting my life on the line. But I have to give you an excuse to study tape? When I do give you an excuse-and my excuse is I’m studying tape-that’s not a good enough excuse. But Ed is wrong for asking for a new contract. Come on, man…I don’t have to be playing for them. I could retire. I don’t need the money.”

Fantasy Impact: It seems pretty clear that Ed Reed is coming to the end of his road as a Baltimore Raven. I expect him to play his year out in purple and black, for his teammates and for the sake of being able to do what he does for perhaps the final time in his career. I would say he most likely retires after this season, with a slight chance that he’ll sign a one-year deal with another team next offseason.
