Paul Konerko, Alex Rios Screwed by Joe Girardi (Update: …and the Players)

Email Post Email Post
joe-girardi-alex-rodriguez

I just posted about how Reds 1B Joey Votto was inexplicably left off the NL All Star team by Phillies manager Charlie Manuel.

Well, Votto wasn’t the only player with Midwest ties who got bent over when the rosters were announced today. Paul Konerko and Alex Rios of the Chicago White Sox also have legitimate beef with Yankees manager Joe Girardi.

At least Konerko still has a shot to make the team; Rios, however, will see perhaps the greatest half season of his career go unrecognized. That’s BS.

Joey Votto Gets F’d in the A by Charlie Manuel

Email Post Email Post
joey-votto-all-star

This is un-f’ing-believable.

Joey Votto, who would undoubtedly be in the top 5 if NL MVP voting were held today, was inexplicably not named as an NL All Star reserve by Phillies manager Charlie Manuel.

So who was named? Well, Ryan Howard was, of course.

Yeah, this would be the figurative definition of getting “f’d in the a”.

Remembering the Most Patriotic Play in Baseball History

Email Post Email Post
rick-monday-american-flag

I don’t say many nice things about the Chicago Cubs on this blog. However, seeing as how today is the birthday of our great nation, I feel compelled to do just that.

Why? Well, a little over 34 years ago, a Cubs outfielder named Rick Monday made what is unquestionably the most patriotic play in the history of baseball.

During a game in LA between the Cubs and the Dodgers, two men ran onto the outfield with designs on burning the American flag. They were just about to be successful when Monday swooped in and grabbed the flag, foiling their plans.

Winslow not slowed

Email Post Email Post

Update: The St. Petersburg Times is reporting Bucs tight end Kellen Winslow (knee surgery) was working “without any apparent discomfort or obvious limitations in range of motion” toward the end of offseason workouts.

Fantasy Impact: Winslow has been injury plagued throughout his career, but is no doubt an extreme talent.  It remains to be seen whether or not he can stay on the field for the entire upcoming season.

Davis could get cut

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Cleveland Plain Dealer is reporting that the Cleveland Browns are expected to carry just three tailbacks on their 2010 roster. Montario Hardesty and Jerome Harrison are locked into two spots, and the Browns will carry versatile fullback Peyton Hills behind Lawrence Vickers. The final position will come down to James Davis and Chris Jennings.

Fantasy Impact: Davis should be able to make this team, but the truth is he is fighting for his job in camp this year.  He is a non fantasy factor but once again anything can happen in Cleveland.

Brady could be franchised

Email Post Email Post

Update: Patriots quarterback Tom Brady getting the franchise tag is becoming more of a possibility with each day that passes without a new deal, according to the Boston Globe.

Fantasy Impact:  Brady is coming up on unrestricted free agency, and the Pats certainly aren’t going to let their star quarterback walk for nothing.  If a deal can’t be worked out , expect him to be tagged.

No contract talks for Taylor

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Steelers and cornerback Ike Taylor have not started any contract negotiations yet, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau loves Taylor’s game so expect a deal to get done.

Fantasy Impact:  Taylor won’t hold out as the management loves this kid, and a deal should happen soon.

Ganther close to limit

Email Post Email Post

Update: Seattle running back Quinton Ganther, who was arrested in California on suspicion of DUI Saturday morning, got his blood alcohol content results back, and according to Pro Football Talk, he was very close to the legal limit.

Fantasy Impact: This isn’t the type of press Ganther needs and it won’t help him get more carries with the Seahawks.  Stay tuned to see if there are any reports on whether he actually was over the limit which might warrant a suspension from the NFL.

Celebrating the 4th of July with Two American Traditions: Fireworks Fails and Lee Greenwood

Email Post Email Post
4th-of-july-eye

Today is July 3rd, which means that tomorrow is one of the most important dates on any proud American’s calendar.

July 4th, our nation’s birthday, Independence Day.

If you really think about it, this is the one day on the calendar that truly brings all Americans together – regardless of politics, religion, race, or gender – in support of a single cause: celebrating our incredible nation.

So, in honor of July 4th, I’ve decided to use this space today to pay my own special blogging tribute to our annual celebration of freedom and liberty.

And what better way to start out than by laughing at some awfully hilarious fireworks fails. (But don’t worry…there is a real tribute for those who make it all the way to end.)

Could Byron Scott Ultimately Bring Chris Paul to Cleveland?

Email Post Email Post
byron-scott-cavs-coach

Thursday morning ESPN reported that Byron Scott will be named the Cleveland Cavaliers new head coach.

Scott is a former NBA player who played a key role on the Lakers for three championship seasons (’85, ’87, ’88). He was around great players like Magic Johnson, James Worthy, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for most of his career.

He also has coaching experience, having coached the New Jersey Nets to two NBA Finals in 2002 and 2003. The Nets lost both of those series because the Lakers (2002) and the Spurs (2003) were far superior then his Nets teams.

Hollis Thomas suspended

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to NFL.com the NFL suspended free agent DT Hollis Thomas eight games for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

Fantasy Impact:  Thomas had a nice season last year, but with this suspension over his head, he might not find another gig.  His career might be over at this point.

Jackson suspended by NFL

Email Post Email Post

Update: ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Chargers wideout Vincent Jackson is not expected to appeal his three-game league suspension. According to Schefter, Jackson realizes the league was lenient in banning him for only three games, and that V-Jax is likely “comfortable” with the length of the penalty.

Fantasy Impact:  The Redskins are interested in landing Jackson to play with Donovan McNabb.  The bigger issue is Jackson is continuing to holdout from workouts because of his contract situation.

Did the NBA Store inadvertently tip LeBron’s hand? (Probably not.)

Well isn’t this interesting.

Thanks to a tweet by JA Adande, I was alerted to this oh-so-interesting product listing at store.nba.com. That, ladies and gentlemen, would be a Chicago Bulls #6 jersey. The name on the back? Who else? James.

Now, just to make sure I wasn’t overlooking something, I checked the Bulls most updated roster. There is a #6, but it Ronald Murray, not someone named James.

And, if you’ll recall, LeBron James indicated last season that he would be changing his number to 6 after the 2009-10 season.

So…what the hell could this mean?

Every Blackhawk fan was hoping this time would never come, but it had to eventually.

Did you see the homepage of this Godforsaken website? All LeBron f’ing James and the damn NBA free agent BS.

We need something…anything…to distract us from this nonsense.

How about a quick video of a cute female sportscaster speaking a foreign language and getting stiffed on a handshake…because the guy she extends her hand towards is blind. Sound good?
