The Scales of Douche: LeBron James Crowned by The King

I was on vacation last week and thus only waded briefly into the cesspool of opinion regarding LeBron James’ decision to take his talents to Connecticut for an ESPN special where he announced that he’d be taking his talents to South Beach.

In retrospect, I’m rather pleased I was removed from my daily blogging regimen during the week when sports – and certainly sports coverage – came dangerously close to jumping the shark.

Upon returning this morning, I was not planning on saying anything else about LeBron for awhile; but then I made a mistake, a big one: I stumbled upon a column by Jay Mariotti and, *gulp*, actually read it…at least the first two paragraphs anyway.

And after reading, I simply could not resist calling attention to one of the most ironic, laugh out loud hilarious examples I have ever seen of the pot calling the kettle black.

Jay Mariotti, yes Jay Mariotti, referred to LeBron James as a douche bag.

“Good evening ladies and gentlemen…and welcome to Yankee Stadium”

Legendary Yankee public address announcer Bob Sheppard passed away Sunday morning.

Ironically, like Coach John Wooden who died last month, Mr. Sheppard was 99. In fact he was born less than a week after Wooden — about 800 miles east and 800 worlds away in New York City.  Both served as officers in the Navy during the Second World War.

LeBron James Was Right to Leave Cleveland

Email Post Email Post

LeBron James was “blessed” and “honored” to be drafted first overall by his home state Cleveland Cavaliers, which now seems like it was a burden.

He didn’t go to college and get to choose where he would continue his post-high school basketball career. He is a 25 year-old mega-ultra-superstar who has never left Ohio, a state that clung to him like a high school girl who’s boyfriend is leaving for college.

LeBron James faced unrealistic expectations that came his way every season. The weight of not only Ohio, but of the entire Midwest and all of the small-market teams, was placed on his back.

LeBron James the basketball player isn’t the “Chosen 1”, his back is, the exact spot of his famous tattoo.

LeBron James Goes to Miami: We Were All Witnesses

Email Post Email Post

News broke folks.

LeBron James is now going to my home in South Florida.

More precisely, Miami.

Does that do anything for me? No. Without a doubt.

I’ve been a Cavs fan since I can remember, but this one goes down as a defining moment in sports history, and it has two sides, the beautiful, and the ugly.

It’s not “The Decision”…it’s the egregious way it was handled

Email Post Email Post

Wanted to chime in quickly; on vacation so haven’t had much time to write about this other than on Twitter.

Regarding LeBron’s decision to go to Miami…fine. Go.

If that’s what you want to do and what you think is best, who is anyone to begrudge you that? We can all wish you’d stay in Cleveland but no one can hold it against you if you leave.

A lot of NBA players fought hard for free agency so LeBron, Chris Bosh, et al could make choices like they’ve made. So make your choice.

But, what I think really galls everyone – especially the citizens of Cleveland and Akron – is the complete disrespect shown to the organization (quitting in playoffs, not calling Gilbert) and the city (saying Cleveland had “the lead” despite this plan being hatched two years ago; going on national TV to rip the city’s heart out) with the egregious way this whole thing was handled.

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to Detroit News, Detroit Lions’ DE Copeland Bryan was placed on injured reserve due to bothersome right knee pain. Bryan, 26, was placed on injured reserve last season after spraining his MCL in his right knee against the Packers in October.

Fantasy Impact: Bryan played in five games, starting one, making five tackles, including one sack.

Owens shows frustration towards media and ESPN

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to USA Today, Free Agent and six-time Pro Bowl WR, Terrell Owens, feels the biggest reason for not being signed still is from the media. “I may do 99 good things right and if I do one thing wrong, ESPN and the people on there … make it out to be the worst thing ever,” says Owens.

Fantasy Impact: Owens, 36, caught 55 passes for 829 and five TDs last year.

James to be suspended

Email Post Email Post

Update: Atlanta Falcons reserve linebacker Robert James has been suspended for the first games of the 2010 season for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Fantasy Impact:  James isn’t a significant player, and chances are this could mean he will be released by the Falcons.

Reed seeking new deal

Email Post Email Post

Update: Ravens safety Ed Reed, who has three years and nearly $19 million remaining on his contract, is hoping to sign a new deal with the Ravens, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Fantasy Impact:  Reed was a question mark to return this season due to nagging injuries, and now he is looking for a new deal.  Keep your eye on this situation, but the Ravens clearly aren’t going to be willing to fork over a new contract for the aging veteran.

Pierce retires from NFL

Email Post Email Post

Update: Former New York Giants player Antonio Pierce has announced his retirement from the NFL, according to the New York Daily News’ Ralph Vacchiano. He will join ESPN as an analyst.

Fantasy Impact:  This is an interesting move given he is just 31 years old.  He did miss significant time last year for the Giants and was surrounded by controversy which is why the team cut ties with him.  Nonetheless it is a surprise to see him hang it up.

Say It Ain’t So LeBron

Email Post Email Post

Sources are reporting to ESPN and elsewhere that LeBron James was leaning towards joining Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami.

This is horrifying news for Cleveland fans. (Like myself)

I believe this will be the worst travesty in Cleveland sports history. Slightly beating out The Choke.

James often mentions his love for Akron and Cleveland and how he planned to bring a title to Cleveland. But after this he may not be able to show his face in there ever again.

But in James defense, he still hasn’t personally announced anything yet. He plans to make his announcement on ESPN at 9.

Saying Goodbye to Former Blackhawks is Not Easy

Email Post Email Post

Like many other great sports cities, the fans fall in love with their favorite teams’ players.

Chicago is no different.

Watching the Hawks, whether it be live or on TV, fans feel some kind of connection to the players. It’s that weird feeling like you know the player and are friends with him.

Watching a Blackahawk game is like watching your friends play. You cheer for them to do well, and when they mess up you easily forgive and forget. At the end of the day, whether the team wins or losses that day, you’re all still friends.

That’s what makes Chicago fans such great sports fans. They not only have a passion for the game, but a passion for the players too.

So when I started to see player after player from the Hawks’ Stanley Cup winning team get sent away to another team, I seriously was saddened by it.

Jets Sign 2nd-Round Pick Ducasse

Email Post Email Post

Update: The New York Jets have signed second-round pick LG Vladimir Ducasse to a four year, $3.25 million contract.

Fantasy Impact: Ducasse has set the bar for other second-round picks, as he is the first second-rounder to sign thus far. He and second-year guard Matt Slauson are expected to compete for New York’s starting left guard spot, but Ducasse seems to have the inside track. Ducasse is still raw, though, and there are questions about how well he will handle the transition to the NFL – he played college ball at Division I-AA Massachusetts. However, he is incredibly athletic, has a high football IQ, and has so far displayed a strong work ethic with the Jets. Not to mention, New York is an ideal spot for Ducasse, as he will be sandwiched between two of the best linemen in the game – LT D’Brickashaw Ferguson and C Nick Mangold. Expect big things from Ducasse as he matures and gets acclimated to life as an NFL lineman.

Jets Ink Ferguson to Long-Term Deal

Email Post Email Post

Update: ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the New York Jets and LT D’Brickashaw Ferguson have agreed to a 6-year, $60 million extension, $34.8 million of which is guaranteed. Ferguson still has two years left on his rookie contract, which means that, with the extension, his current contract spans eight years and is worth a total of $73.6 million.

Fantasy Impact: This is great news for the Jets. Now that the first of the “Core Four” is signed, Jets’ GM Mike Tannenbaum can focus on locking up CB Darrelle Revis, C Nick Mangold, and ILB David Harris long-term. Over the past two seasons, Ferguson has established himself as one of the best left tackles in the game, and QB Mark Sanchez can now breathe easier knowing that D’Brick will be protecting his blind-side for the better part of the next decade.
