U.S. Pisses off David Beckham, Battles England to 1-1 Draw in World Cup Opener

If you know me, you know that I am not a natural soccer (sorry…FOOTBALL!) fan.

But I promise you that I’m trying. Two of my best friends in high school were pretty boy blonde prancers who enjoyed duking it out with only their feet on “the pitch”, so in honor of them (this is for you Jay and Jackson Kavanaugh) I am doing my best to get into the 2010 World Cup.

And to be perfectly honest, I was completely enthralled by today’s 1-1 tie between the U.S. and England in what was widely renowned as the most anticipated soccer match in U.S. history.

Going to the Blackhawks parade and being part of history was one of the most fun things I could’ve done. Never had I seen so many people going absolutely crazy.

And when I mean crazy, I mean crazy.

Email Post Email Post
clint-dempsey-usa

Maybe here in 2010, it is.

While many such as myself have always fancied October the best month of the sports year (baseball playoffs, football, hockey, hoops about to begin, crisp weather, etc), let’s take a look at right now and what is making mid-June such a great time to be a sports fan:

Ingram getting healthy

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Philadelphia Daily News is reporting Eagles tight end Cornelius Ingram (ACL tear) participated in every practice during OTAs this spring.

Fantasy Impact: Ingram is going to be a in battle for the backup tight end role as the team already has Brent Celek as te starter.  Ingram must stay healthy, and he could be a pleasant surprise for the Birds.

stupid-cubs-haircut

Thanks to MSF’s good friend Jimmy Traina and today’s Hot Clicks we stumbled upon a rather ambitiously coiffed Cubs fan, as highlighted by the fine folks at the sublimely named The Friendly Blogfines.

As you know, I could probably type for days and days making derogatory comments about this North Sider, but I think in this case I’ll just let the visual evidence speak for itself.

Behold, one lovable loser and is lovably lame haircut:

Gilyard has joined Rams practices

Email Post Email Post

Update: The St Louis Globe-Democrat is reporting that rookie WR Mardy Gilyard has joined Rams practices now that final exams ended at the University of Cincinnati. Gilyard stayed after mandatory minicamp practice Thursday to catch extra passes from fellow rookie Sam Bradford.

Fantasy Impact: Given the wideout situation in St. Louis, Gilyard has a real shot to make an impact this year.  He might be a nice late round sleeper for fantasy owners.

Ronnie Brown will be back

Email Post Email Post

Update: Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown (recovery from foot surgery) will be healthy and ready for the beginning of training camp, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.

Fantasy Impact: Brown missed the team’s OTA’s and caused a sense of concern amongst his critics, but the team was just taking it slow with his recovery.  He will be back in time for training camp, and should not be limited.

Vinatieri says he’s healthy

Email Post Email Post

Update: Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri says he feels healthy heading into the 2010 season, according to Indy Football Report.

Fantasy Impact: Vinatieri had a hip injury that nagged him all of last season and limited him to just six games.  He was once one of the top tier kickers for fantasy owners, but has fallen off the map.

Fasano signs tender

Email Post Email Post

Update: Miami Dolphins tight end Anthony Fasano has signed his one-year, $1.76 million tender for the 2010 season, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Fantasy Impact: Fasano is the starter at the tight end slot, but he is going to have some competition in camp this year for that role.  He is not a guy you should target in fantasy drafts unless your desperate.

Pats threaten Mankins’ salary

Update: New England Patriots offensive lineman Logan Mankins has become the latest NFL player threatened with salary reduction by his club if he does not sign his restricted free agent contract tender by next week, according to the Boston Globe.

Fantasy Impact: We expect Mankins will sign the tender which should net him somewhere over $3M next season.  This should be resolved by early next week.

NBA Finals 2010 (Game 4): Lakers – 89/Lakers – 96

Well, I was right my friends!

If the Celtics play team basketball, they can take this series, and shove it down the Lakers’ throats. That is exactly what happened last night, as the C’s shut out the Lakers the entire game, as Kobe and Co barely saw the light of day.

Introducing the crazy new Big 10 (12) and Pac 10 (11) to their crazy new football coaches

Email Post Email Post
bo-pelini-yelling

So, did you hear the news?

The Big 10, which actually had 11 teams, added a team from the Big 12, which did in fact have 12 teams at the beginning of today. So now, the Big 10 actually has 12 teams while the Big 12 actually has 11…no wait, 10, because Colorado is now a part of the Pac-10, which had 10 teams but now has 11.

So, let’s try this again: the Big 12 had 12 teams, but lost two and now has 10, technically making it the Big 10. And the Big 10, which had 11 teams, added one and now has 12, technically making it the Big 12. The Pac-10, which no one will care about anyway now that USC is on probation, is now the Pac-11.

[Deep breath....deep breath]

I can’t take this anymore. Let’s make fun of some coaches.

Johnny, let’s show the Big 10 (12) and Pac 10 (11) what they’ve won!

Nebraska To Join Big Ten, More Expansion Could Follow

Email Post Email Post
blockN

The Big Ten is getting bigger and it may not stop at 12 schools.

First things first though, or to be over dramatic, THE FUTURE IS NOW!

All the indications from the mainstream media are that The University of Nebraska will formally announce a move from the Big XII to the Big Ten by this weekend. This, ironically, would leave the Big XII at 11 teams (insert “they always were 11, Iowa State sucks” joke here) and Nebraska boosts the Big Ten from 11 to 12 teams.

If that is confusing, so too will be a redesigned symbol if the conference tries to hold onto the Big Ten name.

Which Chicago Sports Team Will End Its Title Drought Next?

Email Post Email Post
cubs-tradition

The winds of unbridled excitement, reminiscent of 2005, are blowing through the city of Chicago today after the Chicago Blackhawks ended a 49-year Stanley Cup drought last night by defeating the Philadelphia Flyers in OT.

As with the White Sox championship back in the Fall of ’05, the Blackhawks winning it all is extra special because of the prodigious cavern of time and seasons in between this title and the franchise’s last.

But that is how things go in Chicago. Teams win a title, then wait a long, long time before winning another. Case in point: the Bulls in ’94 and ’95. They went an entire two years without a 3-peat! It was truly a trying time for Chicagoans.

Okay…so maybe the Bulls are a bad example.

We all know who the big, pathetic elephant in the room is whenever someone mentions the words “Chicago” and “title drought” in the same sentence.

Now that the White Sox and Blackhawks have ended their droughts, the question is: will the Cubs be next? Or will another shorter Chicago sports drought end first?
