Seahawks release Williams

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Seattle Seahawks have released (WR) Reggie Williams. Williams signed as a free agent in April after a tryout with the team, but hasn’t stood out over the first few weeks of camp. Fantasy Impact: Williams was once a top 10 pick by the Jaguars so you know the talent is there as long as he gets a chance by some team.

Redskins acquire Brown from the Saints

Email Post Email Post

Update: The New Orleans Saints have traded (OT) Jamaal Brown to the Redskins for a 3rd round pick in 2011. Brown was upset with the tender he signed with the Saints, which caused him to skip all offseason voluntary workouts. Fantasy Impact: Brown was hurt all of 2009, but was a pro bowl offensive linemen from 2006-2008. He should provide great protection for McNabb this season along with number four overall pick Trent Williams.

Update: Scout.com reports that the Redskins signed linebacker Perry Riley to a four-year deal on Sunday.

Fantasy Impact: Riley will battle for playing time this year, but probably won’t end up as a starter.

Sammie Lee Hill to be a backup

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to the Detroit Free Press, defensive tackle Sammie Lee Hill is likely going to be forced into a backup role this season.

Fantasy Impact: Hill will have a big role in the defense even though he is not a starter.  Top pick Ndamukong Suh looks like he will be a starter.

Matt Jones not impressing

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to the Dayton Daily News, wide receiver Matt Jones looked very ordinary at the Bengals most recent mandatory minicamp.

Fantasy Impact: Jones was said to have been in the best shape of his career, so these comments are not good for his stock.  He will have to battle for playing time this season.

Bryant resting his knee

Email Post Email Post

Update: Recently acquired wideout Antonio Bryant has been resting his knee during the Bengals’ practices thus far, according to ESPN.com.

Fantasy Impact: Bryant had knee surgery in the offseason so it is not a shock that the team is limiting his activity.  He got a big deal this offseason and the team is looking for him to produce.

The Great, Benevolent Manute Bol, Sudan’s “Basketball Warrior” Dies at Age 47 [Updated]

Email Post Email Post
manute-bol

Update 6/19/10: I am terribly saddened to have to update this post, which was originally written on 5/20/10.

One of my favorite basketball players of all time – and, in truth, one of my favorite people – passed away today. Manute Bol, who spent his life using his God-given gifts to benefit his war-torn homeland of Sudan, died today at age 47 from complications arising from acute kidney failure and Stevens-Johnson syndrome.

I am recycling this post back to MSF’s home page in honor of Bol. Watch the documentary embedded below. It is a great testament to what a wonderful man Manute Bol was.

Rest in peace Manute. I can say something about you that I hope someone can someday say about me: this world is a better place because you were in it.

One of the hottest stories in the sports world this morning is Floyd Landis’ admission that he used performance enhancing drugs for most of his cycling career. While we can, on some level, applaud Landis for coming forward, this story mostly serves as a reminder of everything that is wrong with sports.

Another story, one that is getting far less national media play, serves as a reminder of everything that is good, and right, and altruistic about sports and the men who play them.

Sadly, said story revolves around the exigent health circumstances of former NBA player Manute Bol, who is currently being hospitalized with kidney failure and Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, a skin disorder (possibly caused by kidney medication) that left the skin around his mouth so sore that Bol could not eat for 11 days.

Most people know Bol for the shot blocking prowess that was a natural byproduct of his massive height. What not enough people know is how Bol – in an era defined by many apolitical, self-serving sports heroes – used his celebrity and income as an America sports figure to help out his civil war ravaged homeland, the Sudan.

CUE: Robert Stack, walking into frame, with a serious expression on his face. ROBERT STACK (eye brows slanted, sly smirk): Join me. Perhaps you may be able to help solve a mystery.

What mystery you ask?

Well, none other than the biggest mystery in sports right now: what was the penalty that cost the United States what would have been the deciding goal in the final few minutes of yesterday’s game against Slovenia?

And in case you didn’t watch the game, this image really is about all you need to see:

CWS begins today!

lsu-college-world-series

In case you haven’t noticed, and honestly it’s likely you have not, the College World Series begins today in Omaha, Nebraska. I love baseball, and especially adore amateur sports; therefore this is truly my favorite sporting event of the year.

Ask those who’ve attended and they’ll tell you, “It’s better than the Final 4 or the Super Bowl.” And having attended the CWS in 2004 and 2007, and enjoying the Final 4 in my city of residence this past April, they’re absolutely correct.

This is Americana at its finest. Unless you’ve been, please hold your laughter.

Soccer (Fútbol) is the World’s Favorite Sport, but Where is it in America?!

Email Post Email Post

David Beckham is the first player that comes to my mind when soccer is mentioned.

My knowledge of the game may be outdated., but with the pathetic MLS league dismissing any growing passion I develop for the game, who could blame me?

The highest level of talent is showcased in Europe, and it’s lost on most of the U.S.  Many Americans would love to be singing the fight songs while drinking beer and waving their team’s flag. The transition from fan to “supporter” would be welcomed.

And despite what you may hear, soccer is a marketable game here in the U.S.

Cutler May Have Confidence In WRs, But Should Bears Add a Proven Receiver?

Email Post Email Post

The current wide receivers of the Chicago Bears have been criticized by many, and Bear fans seem to be divided.

Some like the youthfulness of the receivers and believe Devin Hester, Earl Bennett, and Johnny Knox are the future of the Bears, a team historically known as having poor wide-outs.

Others believe the total opposite.

Some fans would love the Bears to get a proven receiver to help to aid Cutler in becoming the franchise QB they hoped him to be when they traded for him.

U.S. and Slovenia Play the Best Game So Far in the World Cup

Email Post Email Post

It looked hopeless, or, at least very dim, for the United States at halftime of their second group play game against Slovenia.

The U.S. were down 0-2, and it looked very dim for a comeback, but the United States, as they always seem to do, came back to get a much needed point in a terribly refereed game.

Sloppy defense early was the culprit, again, for the U.S., conceding a goal just 12′ in. This has become some sort of tradition for the U.S., and it almost bit them in the butt this match. Another Slovenian goal in the 41′ put Slovenia up two going into the half. It was looking very bad for the Americans, and their chances to advancing out of group play.

The Americans needed some leadership, and they found it in Landon Donovan.

“It’s over. It’s over…it wasn’t pretty, but it’s over”
