Witnessing the Fall of the Cavaliers Empire

Email Post Email Post

May 13, 2010.

The date which could be known as the final day of the Cavaliers as an elite.

The day that hell broke loose in every media outlet, and the day that Twitter had sprung at least 3 types of trending topics which included either LeBron, Cavs, Cavs suck, and plenty of others surrounding the LeBron/2010 hoopla.

But since then, basketball has been played. The Magic were vanquished, as were the Suns, and the Finals was set. Set in great fashion it was, with the two most historic franchises in NBA history; the Lakers and Celtics.

But this is not about that, this is about how the Cleveland Cavaliers are falling apart. In a way, it much resembles the Roman Empire.

Ranking the Brilliant “Auto-Tune the News” Videos From 1-11

Email Post Email Post
turtle-fence-auto-tune-the-news

I spent the past weekend in Indianapolis watching two of my best friends, Nick and Megan, get married. It was a great weekend spent catching up with friends and, as these weekends tend to do as you get older, reminding us of how much more difficult it is now to recover from a night of drinking than it used to be.

There was also lots of sitting around and waiting, because that’s what men who are in a wedding party do for the most part. Luckily, this waiting has become much more palatable because of the iPhone, which provides easy access to YouTube and its infinite supply of funny videos, including YouTube’s most underrated nugget of comedic genius: Auto-Tune the News.

So, in honor of this great weekend, I will make something useful out of the time we spent watching Auto-Tune the News videos as we awaited the Smallwood (yep, that’s your name now Megan!) nuptials.

NBA Finals Recap (Game 1): Battle in the Trenches

NBA Finals 2010 (Game 1): Celtics – 89/Lakers – 102

So, what can I say from watching this game last night?

Well, I was right when I said that the Lakers big men are the key in this series.

Second;  Kobe Bryant may be one of the most unstoppable offensive performers of all-time. Third, the Lakers defense has definitely improved from the ’08 showdown, and that just could be the difference.

2010 Stanley Cup Final Is Not Letting Fans Down

Email Post Email Post

After Game 3 had been won by the Flyers, I realized: Wow, this has been nothing short of an exciting Stanley Cup.

All three games have been one goal games. Game 1 had five lead changes, Game 2 was a defensive game, and Game 3 was a thriller that needed extra time to decide its winner.

No game has been lacking thrill and excitement. It’s something that only playoff games can bring. That feeling where you almost pee yourself, (I admit it) or when it seems like your heart stops for just a second as the other team shots the puck.

Blown Call by Jim Joyce Costs Armando Galarraga Perfect Game; Partially Redeemed by Humble Post-Game Reaction

jim-joyce-blown-call-video-picture-costs-armando-galarraga-perfect-game

Tonight I was supposed to board a plane at 8:00 for Indianapolis. It is now 10:46 and we just got in the air about 10 minutes ago after a 2 1/2 hour delay.

Amazingly, the unexpected and unwanted extra time spent at the airport was rather entertaining because all Twitter broke loose with one blown call by MLB umpire Jim Joyce. (Also in the amazing category: I’m writing this post and publishing this post from 30,000 feet in the air!)

Surely you have seen the blown call heard ’round the world by now. Just in case you haven’t, here is the sure-to-be-removed-soon-by-the-MLB-video-gestapo video of Jim Joyce’ blown call that cost Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga a perfect game:

Bennett is Bears No.4 option

Email Post Email Post

Update: ESPN is reporting that chicago Bears wideout Earl Bennett is projected as the team’s No. 4 receiver this season. Devin Hester and Johnny Knox are No. 1 and 2 respectively, with Devin Aromashodu also in the mix.

Fantasy Impact:  Bennett is coming off a knee injury, but it remains to be seen whether he can become anything more than a No. 4 option for the Bears.

49ers may cut Jones

Email Post Email Post

Update: The San Jose Mercury News is reporting that 49ers Brandon Jones is at risk to be cut from the team.

Fantasy Impact: Jones signed a 5 year deal worth $16.5M and hasn’t lived up to the hype.  With newly acquired Tedd Ginn now in the mix, Jones is no longer needed for punt return duties and could be cut.

Eagles not interested Atogwe

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Philadelphia Daily News is reporting that the Eagles are not interested in free agent S O.J. Atogwe.

Fantasy Impact: The speculation comes a day after the Birds lost free agent pick up Marlin Jackson who was injured on Tuesday in OTAs, and is likely to miss the entire season.  Rookie Nate Allen will have a shot to win the starting job now.

Smith to go on PUP list

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Detroit Free Press is reporting that the Lions will likely put running back Kevin Smith (ACL surgery) on the Physically Unable to Perform list to start training camp. If this happens, he could end up on the PUP list to start the regular season as well which would mean he has to miss the first six weeks.

Fantasy Impact: This is the exact reason the Lions drafted rookie Jahvid Best, who is likely in line for a heavy work load.

The 9 Best Rick Rolls of All Time

Email Post Email Post
rick-roll

Before you make some snide comment about what a Rick Roll post is doing on a Midwest sports blog, allow me to take care of it for you: umm, what the hell is a post about Rick Rolls doing on a sports blog supposedly about the Midwest?

Answer: who the hell knows, but it’s here, it’s not the first time Rick Astley has been a featured MSF guest, and I promise it will be entertaining if you’re anywhere close to as big of an Internet junkie as I am.

So as Bob Knight once famously said, just sit back and enjoy it. …Continue Reading

What a Difference a Year Makes

Email Post Email Post

Some things just make you shake your head in confusion.

Hearing that Mike Brown was “relieved of his head coaching duties” by the Cleveland Cavaliers has to be at the top of my list of recent head-shaking events.

Last year Brown was named “Coach of the Year”, had LeBron James as the undisputed leader of the Cavs with his first MVP award, and was sitting on top of the NBA with the best record in the league.  They lost, but we all had great hope.

This year Brown still had LeBron, the Cavs went out and acquired the legendary Shaq to “get the King his ring”, again came up at the top of the entire league with 61 wins, had the best home record, and everything seemed possible for the Cavs to go all the way to the NBA championship. Again LeBron won MVP, only the 10th player in NBA history to win that prestigious award back to back.

A year ago Mike Brown had it all, except that elusive Championship.  Again this year Mike Brown had it all.  He had everything necessary to go the distance with a team full of chemistry and talent, belief in themselve,s and the record to back it up.

And yet, this year Mike Brown got a pink slip instead of a title.  Hence the head-shaking confusion on my part.

Graham close to deal with Ravens

Email Post Email Post

Update: League sources have told ESPN's Adam Schefter that the Baltimore Ravens are close to signing former Cincinnati Bengals kicker Shayne Graham. Graham, the fourth most accurate kicker in NFL history, struggled last season, including missing a 28- and 35-yarder in the Bengals lost to the Jets in the first round of the playoffs.

Fantasy Impact: Graham would challenge veteran Billy Cundiff for the kicker's job.
