49ers might let Davis walk

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Mercury News is reporting that the 49ers may let superstar tight end Vernon Davis become a free agent after this season. The report cites an NFL source that says the 49ers’ only planned on paying one of Patrick Willis and Davis.  Willis inked a large 5 year extension earlier this week.

Fantasy Impact: Davis could hit the open market and would be a hot commodity.  Look for another big season from Davis.

Ed Reed coming back

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Baltimore Sun is reporting that Ravens safety Ed Reed is currently recovering from offseason hip surgery. Indications are that Reed will return to the team this season after pondering retirement.  Reed will not be at mini camp this weekend.

Fantasy Impact: Reed is one of the best safeties in the game, but his age is catching up to him. Look for Tommy Zbikowski to play a larger role in the Ravens defense this year.

Well, if you haven’t heard about it yet, then you’ve been either living in a rock, don’t have internet or cable, or just have been too busy to notice that the latest NBA buzz is surrounding the great LeBron James.

More specifically, the buzz is about LeBron’s elbow, and the possibility that the injury may be “way worse” than anyone realizes or than the Cavs will let on. (More on that in a bit.)

To clarify, LeBron James has been playing with what was originally deemed a minor elbow issue, but ever since the Cavaliers met up with the Bulls in the first round, LeBron’s elbow has gotten more aggravated, leading to a great deal of worry in Cleveland.

Sharper had microfracture surgery

Email Post Email Post

Update: ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that the New Orleans Saints safety Darren Sharper had microfracture surgery in the offseason, which may be why interest in the All-Pro safety was subdued over the past few months. Sharper resigned with the Saints on Monday.

Fantasy Impact: Microfracture surgery is a much more serious procedure than the arthroscropic surgery Sharper was said to have had. His availability for the start of the regular season could be in jeopardy. The 34-year-old Sharper had nine interceptions last season.

Facebook Still Sucks…In Both Cyberspace and Reality

Email Post Email Post
facebook-sucks

You may be wondering why I’m posting about Facebook on a sports blog. Fair question. Allow me to explain.

A question I get all the time is, “why isn’t Midwest Sports Fans on Facebook?” The easy answer would be, “Well, because Facebook sucks.” It would pretty much sum up the crux of my feelings.

But then I remember that a pickle became more popular than Nickelback on Facebook, and I think to myself that it can’t possibly be all that bad, right? I wonder if maybe I’m overreacting, just being stubborn, and need to give it a chance.

And then I watch a video and read an article like the video and article I saw tonight and have posted below, and I remember exactly why Midwest Sports Fans isn’t on Facebook: because Facebook sucks. In reality. And in cyberspace. And everywhere else too.

What the Blackhawks Must Do To Beat Vancouver

Email Post Email Post

The second rounds of the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs are off and running, and the Hawks and Canucks find themselves in a familiar spot.

In fact, the Hawks and Canucks battled it out in the Western Conference semi-finals last year, with the Hawks prevailing 4-2. The Hawks proved a nuisance to Canucks’ goaltender Roberto Luongo, but how will this year differ?

Almost as bitter as the Chicago-Detroit rivalry, the Canucks and Hawks hate each other, and hate brings us great hockey.  It brings us even better playoff hockey. I am both excited and scared for this match-up. I am excited because I am positive this series will live up to the playoff intensity.

That’s almost guaranteed, but what scares me is the Sedin twins.

Smiley could be done in Miami

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Miami Herald is reporting that Dolphins OG Justin Smiley’s surgically repaired shoulder is shot.  It is being reported that his arm strength is all but gone, and he is no longer the player he was when the team signed him two season ago.

Fantasy Impact: Smiley is on the trading block, but it is unlikely the Dolphins will get any serious offers for him given he is banged up.  He may end up getting his walking papers.

Eagles waive Shawn Murphy

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Philadelphia Daily News is reporting that the Eagles waived OG Shawn Murphy.  Murphy failed his physical which is most likely the reason for his dismissal.

Fantasy Impact: The Eagles had claimed him off waivers earlier in the week, and him failing his physical certainly didn’t help his cause.
