Matt Millen and The Worst “Apology” of All Time

In case you missed it this weekend, Matt Millen used the NFL Draft to remind everyone why 99.9% of the NFL fan population thinks he is an idiot.

For background on Millen’s joke and subsequent apology, the guys at Detroit 4 Lyfe have the details.

To see Millen’s apology, which has to be one of the least sincere, my-employer-is-making-me-do-this, non-apology-apologies that I’ve ever seen, just click play and try not to snicker:

For the record, I’m not even sure why Millen was apologizing. I didn’t consider what he said disparaging to Polish people. I guess just using the term “Polack” is cause for PC backlash now.

matt-millen-apologyApparently the image-obsessed Worldwide Leader felt it necessary to trot Millen out there for this embarrassingly awkward attempt at apologizing for something that needed no apology in the first place and that Millen really doesn’t apologize for.

What Millen says: “I made a humorous remark…that could have been misconstrued by people of Polish descent.”

What Millen meant: “For anyone who stupidly misconstrued what I said, which was probably no one but ESPN is making me do this, it was a joke!!!”

And really, ESPN’s obvious insistence that he “apologize” is really the funny part about it.

If you’re going to cut to Millen alone after a commercial break to have him right this terrible wrong that he perpetrated on Polish people, Millen should at least, you know, offer up a sincere apology. Even if he doesn’t need to, at least then it looks like there was a reason to cut to him. However, cutting back for 30 some seconds of what Chris Berman might refer to as mumbling, bumbling, stumbling non-apologetic ramblings from a guy who clearly did not think he needed to be apologizing just looked foolish.

Truth be told, if ESPN really wanted Millen to apologize for a group of people he offended, he should have offered up some words of contrition to Lions fans. They are the ones still feeling the effects of words and actions.

Something tells me that Polish people woke up feeling up okay this morning, the stain of Millen’s awful words now washed away with the loofa of time. Lions fans, however, still wake up knowing their team has won just two of its last 32 games and that Millen is to blame. Where was the apology for that?

Yeah as a Polish person myself, I was much more insulted that he was offering up draft analysis after what he did to my Lions.
