NBA Playoffs Recap: Day 1

Email Post Email Post

What an amazing day of playoff basketball, huh?

First off, we had LeBron and co. simply show Chicago who’s boss. Then down in Atlanta, the Hawks seem to be easily cruising along as they face Milwaukee. Let’s not forget about the two of the league’s best players in Carmelo and D.Wade!

There was a lot going on yesterday, and I’m here to give it all to you in a reader-friendly recap! Enjoy!

The Trainer’s Room: Treatment & Rehab for Whiplash Injuries

Email Post Email Post
whiplash-sports-injury-treatment-rehab-recovery

Whiplash is a term most commonly used when describing a car accident. The effects of whiplash and mechanism of injury, however, are not just reserved for the road.

Whiplash is a descriptive term used to describe the sudden snapping of the unsupported head. In a car accident, the seat belt will hold the body in place while the head is forced into hyperflexion and extension. This motion is also seen in many contact sports such as football and hockey.

When a quarterback is getting ready to make a throw and a 300 lb lineman hits him hard from the back, the head again is forced into hyperextension just as in a car accident. This is also seen in hockey when a player gets hit from behind. In both sports, the athletes have chest protectors to absorb the impact on the body and helmets to protect the head, but there is nothing to stop the movement of the head on the neck.

Whiplash is a serious injury that can occur in many different ways, but the effects are usually similar and can be chronic and intense if not properly cared for.

LeBron to Joakim: Cavs will be a “different monster” in playoffs

lebron-james

There are two people most of us care about in the NBA playoffs. One being Kobe Bryant, and the other being LeBron James. Simple as that.

Can’t make an argument, can’t discuss it. It’s just a fact.

Kobe’s already gotten some attention, so now it’s time to give some to the King himself.

We know the jist of the whole “LeBron-playoff” scenario. It’s winning a ring for the King. Plain and simple. That’s all matters.

But what’s really on his mind?

Well Tony and Mike from ESPN’s PTI show were lucky enough to bring in LeBron himself for 5 good minutes. Here it is for those who missed it:

NBA Playoffs Round 1 Watch: Present vs Future

Email Post Email Post
kobe-durant

Hey folks! I know most of you are psyched for this year’s NBA playoffs just like I am and are dying to see an upset, dying to see the superstar showdowns, and can’t wait to see who represents in the Finals.

But before all that, we have to see who can make it out of their conference alive.

I’ll be previewing my own “highlighted” matchups for each round, as well as game follow-ups, highlights, and everything else NBA Playoffs over the next couple of months.

In the first round there is one mano-a-mano matchup between two names we recognize that stands out above the others. One name we’ve heard for years, another we will hear for years to come. One has a slate of four NBA rings in his collection, and the other is salivating to get his first.

I present to you the great matchup of newb vs veteran, all-star vs hall of famer, present vs future…

Do we need to question the dearth of blacks in the big leagues today?

Email Post Email Post
joe-morgan-race-in-baseball

Yes…

…But ONLY if we can also complain about the lack of Hispanics in football, the paucity of whites in basketball, and why there are so few Asians in pro hockey.

See how inane this is? About as inane as Torii Hunter’s racial blast at Hispanic “imposters” last month.

This is such an overplayed topic still somehow perpetuated by the Joe Morgans of the world today. That a north Chicago-based writer who attended Syracuse (all white neighborhood, very rich school) like Yahoo’s Jeff Passan wrote not one but two articles about this topic (and “racism”) on Jackie Robinson Day is equally appalling.

Passan also has his facts completely wrong about certain players, which I can explain at length if requested, but will do so briefly (article linked above):

Fantasy Baseball: Minor League Player Tracker – Week 1

Email Post Email Post
aroldis-chapman-fantasy-baseball

This is the first installment of the Cooler Guy’s Minor League Player Tracker.

I plan on doing a weekly column focusing on the top minor league prospects that are fantasy relevant.  AAA and AA players could have a fantasy impact this season for redraft leagues.  Players in AA and A are strictly dynasty league material, but redraft owners do need to take note because 2011/2012 drafts will have these names in the mix.

MSF Podcast: 2010 NFL Draft Preview with Gil Brandt

Email Post Email Post

On Thursday afternoon, I had the good fortune of doing a second NFL Draft preview podcast with Gil Brandt, scouting legend/guru/sage/oracle/insert-plaudit-here. Brandt’s experience, knowledge, and insight into the draft and scouting process in the NFL really cannot be understated.

Mr. Brandt and I did our first podcast interview about a month ago, focusing primarily on the history of the scouting combine and how NFL personnel departments operate. This podcast gets far more specific about the 2010 NFL Draft, which is right around the corner: next Thursday.

Nicks has surgery

Email Post Email Post

Update: New York Giants wideout Hakeem Nicks recently had surgery on his toe to insert a screw, according to the Newark Star-Ledger.

Fantasy Impact: Nicks had the toe injury last season, and was able to play, but this should resolve the issue.  The screw should be removed sometime during training camp, and he should not be impacted this season.

Titans re-sign RB White

Email Post Email Post

Update: Running back LenDale White has re-signed with the Titans, according to the Nashville Tennessean’s Twitter page. White will apparently earn $1.809 million this season.

Fantasy Impact: White will be counted on as the guy to spell Chris Johnson, so he won’t see much time.  White made no bones about saying he would like to get out of Tennessee, but the Titans aren’t willing to give up his services just yet.

Panthers done with Muhsin Muhammad

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to the Gaston Gazette, the Carolina Panthers are not interested in bring back wide out Muhsin Muhammad for the 2010 season.

2010 NBA Playoffs: Eastern & Western Conference First Round Matchups, TV Schedule, Tickets

Email Post Email Post
nba-playoffs-tv-schedule-tickets-eastern-western-conference

Here we go folks! The NBA season is now over, and it’s the time of year where dreams are made, hearts are broken, and legends are born…

That’s right, it’s time for the 2010 NBA Playoffs.

I know some of you are as serious as me when it comes to the NBA. You know, you’re all over your team, you watch them, study them, brag about them (even if they suck), and you back them up as much as you can.

Then, there are those of you who will watch the game just because it’s on, and don’t mind watching a few LeBron tomahawks, or watching Kobe throw up a buzzer-beater.

Will Dwight reclaim his Eastern Conference title? Will Kevin Durant continue to surprise and dominate the NBA? Will LeBron finally get that special #1?

We’ll soon find out.

Giants re-sign WR Moss

Email Post Email Post

Update: Pro Footballtalk.com is reporting that the New York Giants have re-signed restricted free agent wideout Sinorice Moss to a one-year, $1.176 million contract.

Fantasy Impact: Moss saw time in just eight games last year and caught one ball for 18 yards.  Not exactly the type of production the Giants were hoping for when they took him at 44 overall four years ago.

Submit Your Draft Questions for NFL Scouting Legend Gil Brandt

Email Post Email Post

The word “legend” gets thrown around a lot in places where it doesn’t belong. One place where it absolutely does belong, however, is the headline of this post.

We are extremely fortunate that Gil Brandt, an unquestioned legend of NFL scouting, has agreed to do an encore appearance on the MSF podcast.

I will be interviewing him tomorrow afternoon and want to give everybody one more chance to submit questions. I’ll be choosing the best of the best to ask Mr. Brandt during our discussion.
