McNabb traded

Email Post Email Post

Update: ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweets that Philadelphia Eagles QB Donovan McNabb has just been traded to the Washington Redskins. Schefter writes, “Filed to ESPN: Donovan McNabb has been traded to the Washington Redskins. Compensation still unknown. But McNabb’s a Redskin”

Fantasy Impact: This will make Kevin Kolb the starter in Philadelphia, McNabb the starter in Washington, and Jason Campbell a backup. This move comes after reports surface of the St. Louis Rams projected to take QB Sam Bradford with the number one overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.

Monday night, tiny Hickory High with battle mighty South Bend Central for the 1954 IHSAA Championship Game.

Wait…what?

If you watch enough ESPN or read enough AP reporting about the 2010 Final Four, you might start to confuse the 2010 Final Four with the 1954 Indiana high school basketball tournament.

And while Butler is an underdog, and they are an unlikely participant in the title game based on their conference affiliation and enrollment, by now the prevailing feeling about Brad Stevens’ team should be what Coach K said tonight during his press conference: ”I don’t really consider them a Cinderella.”

So let’s retire that word and simply analyze the for-all-the-marbles matchup between this season’s two best teams: the Duke Blue Devils and the Butler Bulldogs.

Butler-Duke Will Meet for 2010 NCAA Championship

Butler was ranked #11 in the preseason poll, which has made the constant references to the Bulldogs as a Cinderella, to this point, a bit of a misnomer.

However, now that the 5th seeded Bulldogs have made it all the way to the NCAA Championship game – for the first time in school history – I think it is safe to say that the slipper fits, so to speak.

Now the Bulldogs will be facing one of the greatest college basketball programs of the last 25 years in what is sure to be one of the most historic and memorable NCAA Title games in the grand history of March Madness.

Congratulations to Butler, who just won the first Final Four game of the evening 52-50 to advance to Monday night’s NCAA Championship game against the winner of tonight’s Duke-West Virginia matchup.

The game was tied at halftime, back and forth the entire second half, and certainly lived up to its billing as an even matchup between two tough, talented #5 seeds. (Click here to see box score.)

Here is a picture that sums up the final result of tonight’s game and then everything Butler fans need to know for Monday night’s game:

Hawks’ Win Over Devils Moves Them One Step Closer to a Division Title

Email Post Email Post

It took nearly took 60 minutes for the Hawks to score, but when they did, it was huge. A Kris Versteeg goal with 26 seconds left gave the Hawks a  point and the possibility of another in OT.

It had the feeling of a playoff game all over it. No penalties, close score, and an overtime. In fact, the last NHL game without a penalty was back in 2001.

The win can be much attributed to Hawks’ goaltender, Antti Niemi, who, once again, played rock solid, cementing his chance of becoming the playoff starting goalie.

nl-sleeper-picks-fantasy-baseball

Earlier this week, I provided you with a few sleeper picks in the American League. These are players whose average draft positions are lower than I expect them to perform in 2010.

Today, I’m performing the exact same analysis, but for the National League.

Here are some potential NL sleepers that you should be targeting late in drafts or on the free agency wire if your draft is already completed.

Washington signs Willie Parker

Email Post Email Post

Update: ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that the Washington Redskins have reached agreement with free agent running back Willie Parker on a one-year deal with a maximum value of $3.1 million.

Fantasy Impact: Reports are that Parker has been told there will be an open competition for the Redskins’ starting job, the source said. The Redskins signed Larry Johnson last month, and Clinton Portis will be returning after concussion symptoms knocked him out of the last eight games of 2009.

Cowboys release Hamlin

Email Post Email Post

Update: Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that the Dallas Cowboys have released safety Ken Hamlin.

Fantasy Impact: This move comes as no surprise as the Cowboys had been trying to deal Hamlin, but did not find any takers.  Hamlin will not be out of work long as he is likely to latch on with another team, especially after the draft.

Flozell Adams released by Dallas

Email Post Email Post

Update: ESPN is reporting that the Dallas Cowboys haved released offensive lineman Flozell Adams.

Fantasy Impact: This is a surprise move by the Cowboys, as Adams is an impact player at the tackle position.  He is getting up there in age and that may have factored into the team’s decision to cut ties with him.

Dear ESPN, F–k You. Sincerely, The Midwest

Earlier today, I engaged in a lively Twitter conversation regarding ESPN’s step-by-step takeover of every local sports market in the country.

To put it bluntly, I think it sucks.

I go to ESPN for news stories that have national scope and appeal, to read national columnists I enjoy, and for the aggregation of basic news like scores, standings, and schedules. I don’t need ESPN to take great writers “out” of their local markets and aggregate them all for me. I know how to use an RSS reader you smug, arrogant, monopoly.

Congratulations on scrubbing the local veneer right off of some terrific local writers them by removing them from their local sites and local papers to place them on ESPN’s generic f’ing article template.

Oh, and one more thing, I think I speak for everyone in the Midwest, and certainly everyone in Cleveland, when I say that we’d all appreciate you keeping your East Coast-biased opinions about LeBron and New York to your f’ing selves. (Or, you know, to the New York papers, where such persistent advocation of such a viewpoint belongs.)

Eagles trade Sheldon Brown

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Philadelphia Daily News is reporting that the Eagles have dealt Sheldon Brown along with linebacker Chris Gocong to the Browns.  The Eagles received linebacker Alex Hall, as well as Cleveland’s 4th and 5th round picks in the deal.

Fantasy Impact: Brown finally gets out of Philly where he was unhappy with his contract, and gets a shot to big an impact player on a Browns team that is rebuilding, but is looking like they are making all the right moves.

Cardinals sign kicker

Email Post Email Post

Update: Free agent kicker Jay Feely has signed with the Arizona Cardinals, according to the Newark Star-Ledger.

Fantasy Impact: Feely is a veteran kicker who looks likely to replace Neil Rackers in Arizona.  He isn’t a long term solution as he is coming to the end of his career, so perhaps the Cardinals will look to the draft for a young kicker.

Lakers/Cavs Finals? Think Again! (Part 2-The Cleveland Story)

Email Post Email Post

If last season you were sitting in front of your TV and you were drowning in all of the Kobe & LeBron collision hype, you weren’t alone. As a matter of fact, we were all in that same pool my friend!

If you didn’t throw up last season, prepare to completely hurl your breakfast, lunch, and dinner this year, because if this season’s Cavs and Lakers aren’t as stacked as heck, then I don’t know what team is.

While there is much belief this Finals dream will become reality, there is always the alternate side of the story. Maybe a Denver-Cleveland Finals? Dallas-Orlando? (God no!) Los Angeles-Boston?

You never know, but here are a couple reasons, from a Cavs perspective, why a Cavs-Lakers Finals just might be interrupted by a couple other great teams.

Rams won’t evaluate Bradford’s shoulder

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the St. Louis Rams have agreed not to check out former University of Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford’s throwing shoulder. “At that point, (the shoulder) was such a big question mark,” Devaney said Wednesday. “Since then, we’ve talked to so many people that have looked at him from other teams. And our doctors — they’ve gone over him with a fine-tooth comb — we’re completely satisfied. We don’t need a follow-up.”
