Bulger Released by Rams

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Associated Press reports that the St Louis Rams have released veteran QB Mark Bulger after 9 seasons with the club.

Fantasy Impact: It is believed that with the signing of QB A.J. Feeley, the Rams will look to make Feeley the #2 QB for the team while using their #1 draft pick in this years draft to select a QB who will be capable of starting, such as Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford.

Dawkins Claims McNabb Trade a Mistake

Email Post Email Post

Update: NFL.com reports Denver Broncos FS Brian Dawkins, a longtime teammate of Washington Redskins QB Donovan McNabb, said the Philadelphia Eagles made a mistake by trading the veteran quarterback.

Fantasy Impact: Dawkins stated, “Let me preface this by saying this: You finally get Donovan the weapons that he’s been asking for, and the fans have been asking for, for many, many years. You finally get (WR DeSean Jackson) outside. WR Jeremy Maclin’s doing a great job. TE Brent Celek has blossomed into one of the best tight ends in the game. You have WR Jason Avant to move the chains, a physical inside slot guy. So you’re finally getting those things in place and then you trade a guy who is playing at a high level still. That’s what I don’t understand.”

Butler Misses a Shot but Cements a Legacy

gordon-hayward-last-second-shot-against-duke-ncaa-championship-game

I am not a Butler fan, per se. (At least, I wasn’t before tonight.)

However, I can honestly say that before tonight I had never cheered harder for a basketball team to win a game that did not have “INDIANA” written across its chest.

And in what truly is the measure of one’s level of investment in a sporting event, I felt absolutely crushed when Gordon Hayward’s last second heave bounded off the backboard, clanged the front of the rim, and the bounced to defeat. I felt like I had been punched in the stomach.

Now, after about a half hour of reflection plus the joy of “One Shining Moment” to ameliorate my disappointment, I’m sitting here smiling because I finally realized why it became so easy to fall madly in love with the Butler Bulldogs tonight.

Butler reminded me of everything that I grew up loving about the game of basketball, and it was all signified in the most shining moment of all: Hayward’s shot that could have won it all.

Hawks Might Have Won Their Division, But They Want Something Bigger

Email Post Email Post

The Hawks have officially clinched the Central Division for the first time in 17 years. It’s a quite achievement for the young Hawk team, but they are not content with stopping there.

Call them selfish, or whatever you want, but this team has their eyes for one thing and one thing only: the Stanley Cup.

It’s a goal that every NHL team has at the beginning of the season, but only 16 actually get the chance. The Hawks have one of the best chances out of those teams this year, and they know it.

This is why, while it’s nice, the division title doesn’t mean a thing if you don’t have the Cup to show with it also.

Chicago Cubs’ Season Begins Now

Email Post Email Post

Baseball officially started Sunday night with Boston and New York, but most teams and their fans, baseball starts today. This is true for the Chicago “lovable losers” Cubs as they play the Atlanta Braves this afternoon in Atlanta.

It’s now been 102 years since a World Series victory for the Cubs, the longest drought in professional sports history, but will this finally be the year that changes? Maybe, maybe not. The key for the Cubs is to take one game at a time.

Sure, you can make the argument the Cubs have some overrated and overpaid players, but what you can’t deny is, with everyone on the team clicking, they can be a dominant force.

The ‘First Sox Fan’ Refuses to Betray the South Side

Say what you will about Barack Obama’s politics – and I’m sure that many of you have a lot to say (including me…though not here) – but the man knows how to pick a baseball team.

While wearing the obligatory Washington Nationals jacket today to while throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at the Nationals-Phillies game, President Obama made a special point of pulling out his White Sox hat before throwing his pitch.

Watch the video below.

Packers unlikely to re-sign Green

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Green Bay Press Gazette is reporting that the Packers are unlikely to resign unrestricted free agent running back Ahman Green if they draft a running back.  A running back isn’t the top priority for the Packers, but it isn’t out of the question that they take a young running back for the future.

Fantasy Impact: Brandon Jackson is a nice complimentary back to Ryan Grant, but the team could use another running back in the mix.

Dave Revsine: My New Personal White Sox Hero

KVB just forwarded me a link that is absolutely perfect for Opening Day on Midwest Sports Fans for a number of reasons.

First, the story has to do with the White Sox, the official MLB team of MSF (by virtue of the fact that KVB and I wrote the first two posts on this site and we are White Sox die hards.)

Second, the story features Dave Revsine, the official voice of the Big Ten Network.

Third, this story perfectly encapsulates what makes baseball America’s Pastime.

This Just In: Today’s Opening Day!

Today’s Opening day in baseball! (And the weather is great in the East & Midwest)

Though you’d never know it with the sports media fascinated by offseason NFL news, the draft, NBA and (appropriately,at least for today) NCAA finals — where I’ll be tonight at 9 eastern.

Baseball’s been unfairly criticized (fans, by and large, really don’t care about steroids) and ignored in the past, but this April, gosh, it’s at its worst.

Sims could be dealt this week

Email Post Email Post

Update: Profootballtalk.com reports that Seattle Seahawks restricted free agent OG Rob Sims could be traded by as soon as this week.  It has been known now for quite sometime that Sims will not return to the Seahawks, so it is a matter of time before he is dealt.

Fantasy Impact: The Bears and Lions have been linked to Sims in rumors, and now that he has signed his tender, it should speed up him getting his ticket punched out of Seattle.

Clausen’s draft stock impacted

Email Post Email Post

Update: ESPN’s John Clayton suggests that the Kansas City Chiefs with the No. 5 pick in the draft might be a potential landing spot for former Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen.  Clausen’s former head coach, Charlie Weis is also in Kansas City which is another reason for the speculation.

Fantasy Impact: Clausen’s draft status is now essentially unknown with the Redskins landing Donovan McNabb.  If the Browns (7th pick) and the Bills (9th pick) pass on him, he may drop to the late first round.

Eagles declined Haynesworth

Email Post Email Post

Update: Adam Caplan of Scout.com is reporting that the Redskins offered up disgruntled Albert Haynesworth to Philadelphia in the Donovan McNabb trade, but the Eagles declined.  There was also reports that LaRon Landry was a possibility.

Fantasy Impact: This should be interesting to hear how Haynesworth reacts to news that the Skins were willing to deal him.  He might get dealt come draft day, but if not, it will be interesting to see if it impacts his play.

Redskins looking to deal Campbell

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to ESPN 980 Washington, after acquiring Donovan McNabb from the Eagles on Sunday night, the Redskins have now turned their attention to trading quarterback Jason Campbell.  The Bills, Raiders, Jaguars, Panthers and another undisclosed team are all interested in acquiring Campbell.

Fantasy Impact: Campbell is all but gone from Washington, and it will probably come down to which team is willing to give the Skins the highest draft pick.  Look for Buffalo and Oakland to be the highest bidders.

Music Mix: 17 Essential New Songs for Spring

Email Post Email Post
buffalo_trace_saloon

There are few simple things in life as exciting as stumbling upon a great new song. I’m sure a lot of you feel the same way.

And perhaps just as exciting, if not more so, is sharing these treasures of musical discovery with friends and other like-minded music lovers.

In fact, a couple of my best friends and I trade our new musical discoveries a couple of times per year. They are married and each Christmas send out their “Indie Christmas” CD, which features the best songs they found that year. It never fails to be one of my favorite gifts.

I share with them too, though a little more haphazardly…like whenever I have enough great new songs to fill out a CD, which I do now. So since I’m about to send a couple of CDs their way, I figured I’d share some new songs with you too.
