Brett Favre will need ankle surgery to return

Email Post Email Post

UPDATE: According to ESPN, Brett Favre will require ankle surgery in order to return next season with the Minnesota Vikings.

FANTASY IMPACT:  In an email sent to Ed Werner of ESPN, Brett states that “This decision would be easy if not for my teammates and the fans and the entire Vikings staff. One year truly felt like 10 – much like Green Bay for many years. That’s what I was missing in my heart I suppose, a sense of belonging.” Favre would be 41 if he decides to return, and it would be his 20th season in the NFL.  The Vikings didn’t go after any QBs this offseason, so whether they knew about this or not- I don’t know. The statements released do sound like a bunch of good-byes, or another Brett Favre one-two switch. Brett Favre returning is completely up in the air now, unlike it has been all summer.

Epidemic of Crappy College Promo Videos Infests Hoosier State

Email Post Email Post
notre-dame-promo-video

At some point I’ll stop shaking my head so I can actually type.

Seriously, what the hell is wrong with the major universities in my home state?

Over the course of the last year, promotional videos have been released for Purdue and Notre Dame that are so lame, so pathetic, and so utterly turdly, that they defy description.

I’m damn near speechless.

Animated GIF Face-Off: Yankee Pride v The Hansen Block

Email Post Email Post
yankee-hansen

Earlier today while perusing a post by MSF’s good friend Josh Q. Public, I happened upon a very humorous animated GIF showing the brokeback affection shared between former teammates Gary Sheffield and Derek Jeter.

I proceeded to tweet that said animated GIF was “the greatest animated GIF of all-time“. Admittedly, I was exaggerating to induce click-throughs, but it did make me laugh out loud, so I knew people would like it.

Mere minutes later, World of Isaac laid down the gauntlet, saying that another animated GIF was *gasp!* better than the one I had tweeted.

I looked at his, chuckled a familiar chuckle (as I’d seen it before), and then decided to place the onus on you, my trusted MSF reader, to make the final decision.

Ryan Howard vs Adam Dunn (Part 2 of Howard Contract Analysis)

Email Post Email Post
ryan-howard

Continuing from the close of Wednesday’s article on Ryan Howard’s enormous new contract, let’s compare him to another slugger: Adam Dunn.

Mr. Howard had an MVP caliber and historic 2006. Adam Dunn has never had a year which has come close to that. That being said, 2006 was a while ago. Back in 2006, for instance, Travis Hafner hit 42 bombs, and he’s only hit 47 total since.

Dunn has better career stats (130 more RBIs and close to 100 more HRs), though that’s a result of his time in the majors commencing earlier than Howard’s. Consequently, career stats isn’t a fair way to gauge the better “current” player.

Therefore, the best and perhaps only way one can compare the two is to take their last three seasons and look at what I believe to be the two most important offensive statistics: On Base Percentage (OBP) and On Base Plus Slugging (OPS).

Remembering Jimmy V 17 Years After His Death

jim-valvano-net

I did not come to the office today planning on writing a post about Jim Valvano. That all changed after reading a terrific blog post by John Feinstein this morning about Jimmy V, the legendary coach and cancer crusader who passed away 17 years ago yesterday.

A big tip of the cap to Seth Davis for tweeting the link to Feinstein’s article this morning. It is a quick and wonderful read by a man remembering his friend through the good times and the bad in their relationship.

After reading Feinstein’s post, I decided to spend a few minutes this morning providing my own thoughts about Jimmy V, a man who left a legacy that I bet most of you have been inspired by, just as I have been.

The Tale of the Injury: Kobe and LeBron

Email Post Email Post
kobe-bryant-injury-update

Injuries.

They are one word in sports that we never look forward to…not even if this is a Yanks/Sox series and Derek Jeter just tore his achilles tendon sliding home. No sports fan will ever want to see injuries, even if it’s too a player on a rival team.

Why, you might ask?

Well it’s simply because we don’t get to see the leagues, the games, and the stars at 100% if guys get injured. If they get injured, for example, we don’t get to see the full ankle-breaking ability Adrian Peterson shows us, we never get to see if the Lakers would’ve swept the Celtics without Kareem, and we’ll never get to see if Ryan Howard can beat the single season HR record.

That’s the tale of the injury. And why do I bring this up as an NBA writer? Because the game’s only two non-human athletes are injured: Kobe and LeBron.

What does this mean for the NBA? How did they happen? How will this affect the teams? You are about to find out!

Ireland apologizes for prostitute question

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel, Miami Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland apologized Tuesday for asking WR Dez Bryant an inappropriate question during a pre-draft interview. Yahoo Sports reported earlier Tuesday that Bryant was offended when Ireland asked him if his mother, Angela, was a prostitute. “No, my mom is not a prostitute,” Bryant said. “I got mad — really mad — but I didn’t show it.” Ireland said he used poor judgment in a statement released by the Dolphins. Ireland said he meant no disrespect.

Fantasy Impact: Bryant’s mother, Angela Bryant, received an 18-month jail sentence in 1997-98 for drug trafficking.

Eagles won’t sign Garcia

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to the Philadelphia Daily News, the Philadelphia Eagles aren’t bringing free agent quarterback Jeff Garciar. The Eagles did take Mike Kafka in the draft and he will likely be the young guy in their system in the event Kolb turns out to be a bust.

Fantasy Impact: With Kolb and Vick in Philly it doesn’t make sense to bring Garcia into the mix.  Should Vick end up getting dealt which seems remote at this point, it might make sense, but for right now Kolb is the guy in Philly.

So…what exactly does go on behind the scenes at Kentucky?

Email Post Email Post

From TestudoTimes.com:

There’s a John Calipari impersonator on Facebook, who sent this (100% fake) message to Marquis Teague, the five star point guard and recent commitment to Kentucky.

Teague’s response, though, is 100% honest and true. Which, to me, is hilarious. As fans of one of the last “honest” coaches in the NCAA, I thought some of you would get a kick out of it.

Click here to view the awesome Fake John Calipari message.

This should perk up the ears of the NCAA, no?

The Ridiculous and Capricious Ryan Howard Contract (Part 1)

Email Post Email Post
ryan-howard-contract-bad

Ryan Howard’s extravagant seven year contract is excessive, to put it kindly.

The money is too high, but more poignantly, the length is absurd, which has even caused the media — normally very pro Howard — to question the Phillies’ sanity.

ESPN baseball writer Keith Law opened with this salvo Monday night (subscription only):

“The contract extension the Phillies gave Ryan Howard made me laugh when I first heard about it. If you sign a player two years before he hits free agency, you’re supposed to get a discount. Instead, the Phillies paid a premium, giving Howard more money to cover years when he won’t produce nearly enough value to justify the salary.”

Raiders to cut Russell

Email Post Email Post

Update: Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell is on the verge of being released and it could come before the weekend, per ESPN’s John Clayton.

Fantasy Impact: Oakland begins minicamps late this week, and the team cannot risk putting Russell out there and getting hurt.  They will most likely cut ties with him at some point this week and admit that he is the biggest draft bust in professional sports history.

Bengals interested in Hamlin

Email Post Email Post

Update: Free agent safety Ken Hamlin is embarking on a free agent visitation tour, beginning with the Cincinnati Bengals, per Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer.  Hamlin was recently released by the Cowboys in a somewhat shocking move.

Fantasy Impact: Hamlin has just one interception in the last two seasons and never lived up to the big contract Jerry Jones gave him after his 2007 season production.

Sharper visiting Jags

Email Post Email Post

Update: ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported on Wednesday morning that the Jacksonville Jaguars will be Darren Sharper’s first visit, and he writes that if the Jags don’t reach an agreement with him, the Cowboys will be waiting in the wings.

Fantasy Impact: Given the high draft choices some teams used on safeties we know he no longer will be linked to team such as the Philadelphia Eagles, Kansas City Chiefs and the Chicago Bears.
