Update: 3/14/2010: This post was originally published on February 28th, 2010. Results for all games have been posted. Congratulations to Kentucky, the 2010 SEC Tournament champs.
Guess who’s back?
After a few down years in Lexington – at least based on their own lofty standards – the Kentucky Wildcats are once again the alpha dogs in the SEC.
With new coach John Calipari adding terrific freshmen John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, and Eric Bledsoe to returning inside stalwart Patrick Patterson, the Wildcats have spent most of the season in the top 5.
Assuming they don’t stumble again between now and the beginning of the SEC Tournament, Kentucky will have the #1 seed in the East (although Vanderbilt currently sits just one game back) and clearly will be the prohibitive favorite to win the tournament and grab themselves a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Vanderbilt, led by the vastly underrated Kevin Stallings, has had a terrific season thus far and certainly is a team that no one will want to play in either the SEC Tournament or the Big Dance. However, the Commodores’ biggest advantage comes playing at home, and they obviously cannot bring their unique home setup with them to either tournament.
Tennessee, who has continued to be a giant killer this season under Bruce Pearl, will also have something to say about Kentucky’s expected SEC Tournament victory. The Vols just got done beating Kentucky in Knoxville, but could Tennessee do it again and do it on a neutral court?
Clearly the SEC East has been the dominant division during conference play this year, but defending SEC Tournament champion Mississippi State still has shot blocker extraordinaire Jarvis Varnado and will not give away their crown without a fight. I saw Ole Miss play earlier this year in San Juan, and this is an athletic team that could get hot and make a run; the big boys better be careful.
We’ll find out in two weeks which team will be able claim SEC Tournament bragging rights. Whoever wins will be able to add their name to the second table below. First though, they have to get through an SEC Tournament bracket that is sure to be filled with plenty of compelling matchups.
