Update: The Cleveland Browns have re-signed Greg Estandia, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter’s Twitter page.

Fantasy Impact: Estandia is a blocking tight end, and does not pose a threat in the passing game.

Big Ben could be suspended

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette speculates that Ben Roethlisberger could be at risk of a lengthy suspension if he happens to be charged with sexual assault.

Fantasy Impact: The suspension would only be likely should he be formally charged.  Roger Goodell will not take action against him without formal charges, although authorities are still investigating the March 12th incident.

Has TMI Removed Some Magic From the Opening Weekend of March Madness?

Email Post Email Post
ncaa-tournament-upset-history-first-round

We live in the era of ubiquitous information. The Internet and the devices we use to stay connected give us instant access to almost any piece of information that we desire at any time we desire it.

Number crunching algorithms and display/sorting tools take it a step further and actually give us sophisticated data, often available with a few clicks, upon which important decisions can be made.

Important decisions like, you know, your NCAA Tournament bracket picks.

But over the past 24 hours I have started wonder if a plague of too much information is eroding some of the special brand of expected magic that makes the opening weekend of March Madness the most scintillating weekend in sports.

Big Ben a no show

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Pittsburgh Tribune Review is reporting that Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was not in attendance as the team opened their offseason conditioning program on Monday. Roethlisberger is facing sexual assault allegations in Georgia.  This is a not a shock that he was absent.

Fantasy Impact: Big Ben is going to be the starting quarterback in Pittsburgh this year, but it is uncertain as to when he is actually going to report to the team.

JaMarcus Russell a no-show

Email Post Email Post

Update: The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell was a no-show for the start of the team’s offseason conditioning program Monday. This is no shock given that Russell has a horrible work ethic, and the program is voluntary.

Fantasy Impact: With Charlie Frye and Bruce Gradkowski (recently re-signed) both there, this is a bad sign for Russell.  This could be Russell’s last year to prove he belongs in the NFL.

Simms gets cut in Denver

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Denver Post is reporting that Broncos backup quarterback Chris Simms has been released.  It now appears that the Broncos are set to go with Kyle Orton, Brady Quinn and Tom Brandstater at the quarterback position.

Fantasy Impact: Simms looked terrible last season in relief duty for the Broncos, and may struggle to find another suitor.

Inconsistencies Call NCAA Tournament Selection Process Into Question

Email Post Email Post
tubby-smith-minnesota

Upon arriving home from a four day road trip late Sunday night, a friend in his 40s who follows college hoops religiously, emailed me with respect to the just-released brackets:

“I am sure you agree with me that this year has more inconsistency logic than I can ever remember in terms of seedings.”

Indeed I do.

To be fair, in sports, few have harder short-term jobs than the NCAA tournament committee. So when I pen the words below, realize I understand the difficult logistics of so-called “bracketology,” yet still think improvements can be made.

There are a myriad of areas to grouse about, but for me, the so-called bubble teams are unnecessary to cry over since 80% of those teams consistently don’t make it out of the first round, and well over 90% don’t make the Sweet 16 or deeper. This year, as commented upon by many, they are weaker than ever.

However, an area I do feel is botched year after year is how the committee treats conference tournaments.

Women’s NCAA Tournament Bracket Breakdown and TV Schedule

Email Post Email Post
womens-ncaa-tournament-bracket-tv-schedule-tip-times

Last night the bracket for the 2010 Men’s NCAA Tournament was announced. Tonight, the women follow suit with their own version of Selection Sunday, which has been pushed back to Monday this year so that the ladies can have the spotlight all to themselves.

And as I explained a few weeks back, there are some pretty compelling reasons why you should not sleep on this year’s women’s basketball tournament, not the least of which is the possibility of Tennessee and UCONN meeting in the title game with the Lady Huskies’ absurd winning streak still intact.

Pat Summit versus Geno Auriemma…it just doesn’t get any better than that in the women’s game.

But first, both the Lady Vols and Lady Huskies will have to go through whatever bracket gauntlet is laid down before them tonight. As we always are, MSF will be here to bring you all of the need-to-know info for this year’s women’s tournament.

5 Reasons You Should Not Ignore the 2010 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament

Email Post Email Post
2010 ncaa womens tournament schedule - dates - sites - tickets - locations

Update: This post was originally published on March 4th. It has been updated slightly and republished because the women’s tournament selection show is tonight. Get the complete women’s NCAA Tournament bracket breakdown right here at MSF.

Admit it: when I say “March Madness” you immediately think of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

It’s okay, I do the exact same thing.

This is not a particular knock on women’s basketball, but facts are facts and the facts are that men’s basketball is much more popular than women’s.

However, the likelihood that you are far more excited about the impending men’s tournament does not mean that you should ignore the women’s tournament. In fact, I can think of some pretty compelling arguments for why you absolutely should pay attention to this year’s female version of March Madness.

So call it the women’s NCAA borenament if you want to. Refer to it as “March Padness” if you must. I personally always end up filling out a bracket, becoming intrigued, and tuning in by the Sweet 16 or Elite 8.

Tauscher Returns to Packers

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Associated Press reports the Green Bay Packers have made a deal with RT Mark Tauscher that will bring the long time Packer back to Green Bay.

Fantasy Impact: Tauscher started 2009 with an injury, but upon his return, helped boost the leagues worst pass defense. The deal will also allow the Wisconsin native to play his entire career in his home state.

QB Hill Sent to Detriot

Email Post Email Post

Update: Matt Barrows, of The Sacramento Bee, reports the Detroit Lions have acquired QB Shaun Hill from the San Francisco 49ers for a seventh-round draft choice in the 2011 NFL Draft.

Fantasy Impact: Hill will be playing as the #2 QB behind young gun Matt Stafford. The 49′ers picked up QB David Carr last week which pretty much guaranteed Hill’s removal from the club.

Browns Deal Quinn, Wimbley

Email Post Email Post

Update: NFL.com reports that the Cleveland Browns have traded a pair of players once thought to be potential cornerstones of the franchise. The Browns dealt QB Brady Quinn to the Denver Broncos in exchange for FB Peyton Hillis as well as a conditional 2012 draft pick. The Browns also traded LB Kamerion Wimbley to the Oakland Raiders for an undisclosed draft pick.

Fantasy Impact: The Browns had picked up QB’s Seneca Wallace and Jake Delhomme earlier in the week, so it was only a matter of time before QB Brady Quinn was shipped out. Some people are shocked however by the decision to move Wimbley who had recently shown flashes that he could still become the player the club had hoped for after his 11 sack rookie campaign.

Blackhawks Blow Second Straight Game, Lose 4-3 in OT Against Capitals

Another game and another collapse for the Blackhawks this weekend.

After giving up two goals, one being the eventual game winner, to the Flyers last Saturday, the Hawks found themselves up 3-0 against the Washington Capitals going into the third period only to give up three goals, taking the game into OT.

It didn’t get any better for the Hawks.

Update: NFL.com reports the New York Jets have added former MVP RB LaDainian Tomlinson to their #1 ranked rushing offense. The Jets signed LT to a 2 year deal worth 5.2 million.

Fantasy Impact: Tomlinson wanted to go to a team who has a chance to play for the title this upcoming season, he had flirted with The Minnesota Vikings but has chosen to play for the New York Jets who were one win away from the Superbowl last season.
