This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Tony’s Pizza. All opinions are 100% mine.

I was recently given the opportunity to indulge in some free samples of Tony’s Pizza. For those unfamiliar with Tony’s, it is a brand of frozen pizza available in most major grocery stores.

For the record, I’ve never been a big frozen pizza guy. I’m typically partial to delivery. However, living the life of a budgeted blogging bachelor compels me every so often (read: every night) to desire a convenient, cost-effective dinner option.

Enter: Tony’s Pizza.

Eagles cut Kevin Curtis

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Philadelphia Daily News is reporting that the Eagles HAVE released WR Kevin Curtis.  Curtis struggled to stay on the field during his time in Philly, and with the signings of Jason Avant to an extension, and Hank Baskett coming back, he no longer had a role on the team.

Fantasy Impact: After cutting Curtis and Darren Howard, the Eagles will save approximately $10M.  Curtis may find another job, but it might not come till later in the offseason as teams continue to evaluate what they have.

Eagles release Darren Howard

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Philadelphia Daily News is reporting that the Eagles have released DL Darren Howard. Howard was due to earn a $1 million roster bonus Friday on top of his $3.5 million base salary.

Fantasy Impact: This was a quick fall from the top as Howard led the team in sacks back in 2008, but played in just 10 games last season.  The Eagles acqusition of Darryl Tapp this week was writing on the wall for Howard.  He should find another job quickly.

Bears still may deal Olsen

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Chicago Sun Times is reporting that Bears tight end Greg Olsen still may be on the move. The Bears had come out and announced he would not be traded, however many feel that was just a ploy to increase their trade demands.

Fantasy Impact: If Olsen does in fact return to Chicago, you can count on his production dropping.  There are a number of teams who would love to have Olsen and once training camps open, there should be more discussion about him being dealt.

Ricky Williams fires agent

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Dolphins running back Ricky Williams has fired agent Leigh Steinberg, and has hired agent Drew Rosenhaus.  Williams has said he will retire following the 2010 season, so it should be interesting to see if Rosenhaus can convince him otherwise.

Fantasy Impact: Williams is an aging veteran who’s best playing days were spent off the field.  It should be interesting to see the impact Drew Rosenhaus has on Williams’ retirement plans.

Big Day Beckons for the Big Ten

Email Post Email Post
Bo Ryan - Wisconsin Badgers Head Coach

As mentioned in the NCAA Tournament Friday TV Schedule I just posted, today is a big day for the Big Ten. All five Big Ten teams that made the 2010 Big Dance play their first round games this afternoon and evening.

The conference has been much maligned in recent years, yet has a tremendous opportunity to assert itself with a strong first round performance. All the Big Ten needs to do is the exact opposite of what the Big East did yesterday.

The mighty Big East, renowned as the best conference in the nation, saw purported powerhouse Georgetown, along with Notre Dame and Marquette, go down in first round Thursday action. The conference’s lone winner, Villanova, needed some friendly officiating to escape being only the fifth #2 seed in history to lose in the first round.

The Big East still has teams like Syracuse and Pitt to play today, but a strong showing by the Big Ten’s Big Five today would obviously help the conference look much better in comparison.

Let’s quickly break down the schedule, assess what Big Ten fans should expect their conference today, and analyze why this is yet another day for Indiana fans to pull their hair out and lament what was…and what could have been.

NCAA Tournament Opening Round Friday TV Schedule

Email Post Email Post

I hope you put the roughly 12 hours between the end of last night’s games and the tip off of today’s games to good use.

Like to take a deep, deep breath in preparation for today. If it is anything like yesterday, you better brace yourself for some incredible action.

From Old Dominion’s upset victory over Notre Dame, to Murray State’s buzzer beating win over Vanderbilt, to Ohio’s shocking upset of Big East tournament champion Georgetown, to Wake Forest’s last second victory over Texas, and more…yesterday was quite possibly the most exciting, drama-filled first day in the history of the NCAA Tournament.

So what does the opening round Friday schedule have in store for us? Let’s break it down.

NCAA Tournament Betting – Battle of Tigers Brewing in Buffalo

Email Post Email Post

Clemson and Missouri aren’t March Madness favorites, but they could end up having the game of the first round when these two groups of Tigers square off in Buffalo on Friday.

Both teams are comfortable running up and down the floor, but who will be alright when the game slows down in the second half?

Blackhawks Might Lose Seabrook to Another Cheap Check

Email Post Email Post

It’s not only bad enough that the Blackhawks lost their match-up against the Anaheim Ducks 4-2, but they might have lost another star defensemen to a cheap hit.

Former Blackhawk James Wisniewski of the Ducks put a high hit on Seabrook behind Seabrook’s own net. Seabrook, stunned and probably confused, reacted like a person who had just been knocked out. As bad as the hit looked Wisniewski only received a minor penalty. Seabrook, on the other hand, had to miss the entire game.

Blackhawks’ coach Joel Quennville wasn’t shy about  what his thoughts were on the hit.

Butler-UTEP to Play in 5pm ET Special…

Email Post Email Post

…that no one outside of central Indiana or west Texas will see, despite the fact that Butler currently has a 20-game winning streak:

Every time Brad Stevens walks into Hinkle Fieldhouse, he peers into the rafters.

There he sees the overflowing banners listing conference titles and NCAA tournament appearances and quickly realizes what Butler has become: A national model for mid-major schools.

But even with all the attention and success, the third-year coach understands this NCAA tourney will be different for the blue-collar Bulldogs. His team is no longer a surprise, seeded fifth in the West Region, and takes the nation’s longest winning streak, 20 games, into Thursday’s first-round contest against UTEP.

Video: Vicious Hit by James Wisniewski on Brent Seabrook

Email Post Email Post
james-wisniewski-hit-on-brent-seabrook-video

During last night’s Blackhawks-Ducks game in Anaheim, James Wisniewski laid a vicious hit on Brent Seabrook, smashing Seabrook’s head against the glass. (thanks to @TKGore for the tip on this one.)

Immediately after the hit, you can see Seabrook go momentarily limp and slump down to the ice.

And, of course, hockey being the ultimate sport of toughness, the announcers immediately begin to speculate that Seabrook might have been trying to “sell it.”

Gus Johnson’s Greatest YouTube Moments & NCAA Tournament Announcing Schedule

Email Post Email Post
gus-johnson-videos-ncaa-tournament-announcing-schedule

Update 3/21: CBS has released the Sweet 16 TV schedule and announcer assignments. Gus Johnson and Len Elmore will be out west, calling the Syracuse-Butler and Kansas State-Xavier games on Thursday, then the winner on Saturday night.

The three most exciting aspects of the NCAA Tournament, in order, are: 1) analyzing the tournament field and making your bracket predictions; 2) trying to figure out where upsets will come from and then watching them unfold during the first two rounds of the tournament; and 3) Gus Johnson.

I’ve already written posts about the first two, so it is only natural that I now write about the third.

The NCAA Tournament is exciting enough that Ben Stein could call every game and I would still watch and be enthralled. Luckily, CBS has top-notch analysts like Bill Raftery, Len Elmore, and Jay Bilas providing entertaining and insightful commentary.

No one though, and I mean no one, compares to the peerless Gus Johnson when it comes to pure, unadulterated enthusiasm.

Minnesota Twins 2010 Season Preview

Email Post Email Post
minnesota-twins-2010-season-preview-pitching-rotation-batting-order

Last week on this site we had a preview the upcoming Cubs season, and I’m sure Jerod will at some point put together something on his beloved White Sox. For now however, let’s focus on a team that actually has a chance of winning something this year: the Minnesota Twins.

The Twins come into this season with two former MVPs, an increased payroll, and a new stadium. Expectations are as high as they have been in quite some time. Instead of figuring out how to fill roles vacated by Johan Santana or Torii Hunter like years past, the Twins showed aggressiveness in free agency.

Up until Joe Nathan’s (potentially) devastating injury, the Twins looked like the preseason favorite to win the almighty AL Central. Let’s take a look at the reasons why.
