7 Memorable Moments of Goofy Whiteness

The first quartet of Sweet 16 games will be played tonight. It’s Butler-Syracuse and Kansas State-Xavier in the West Region, and West Virginia-Washington and Kentucky-Cornell facing off in the East Region.
We have previewed each game here at MSF, and each has its own elements that makes it intriguing and provide the expectation of a compelling matchup.
The two matchups that I am most looking forward to are Butler against Syracuse and Cornell against Kentucky. The Bulldogs and the Fighting Andy Bernanrds are the clear underdogs in their respective matchups, and many people including me believe that neither team has been given the national credit that it has deserved throughout the season.
There are variety of reasons for this, including conference affiliation, historical school success, and the media markets in which they reside; but there also may be something else bubbling just below surface, another reason why fans in general look at Butler and Cornell as fighting extreme uphill battles against teams led by the likes of Wesley Johnson and John Wall.
Whiteness.
That’s right, whiteness.
You see, Butler’s top two players are Gordon Hayward and Matt Howard, both very good and underrated players with a complexion just a shade darker than an elephant tusk. Cornell, similarly, is led by the powderiffic inside-outside combo of Ryan Wittman and Jeff Foote.
So in honor of Hayward, Howard, Wittman, Foote, and the other caucasian sensations lining the benches of Butler and Cornell, I present to you the first post in a new series you’ll see pop up periodically here at MSF: Memorable Moments in Goofy Whiteness.

Update: According to Adam Caplan of Scout.com, the Minnesota Vikings have been mentioned as a potential landing spot for Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb, should Brett Favre retire. Word broke Wednesday that the Rams were offering their second round pick (33rd overall) and a player to acquire McNabb, but no deal is apparently close.
Fantasy Impact: The Eagles are in a bad spot as teams know they cannot go into another season with McNabb, Kevin Kolb and Michael Vick all on their roster. Expect the Birds to reduce their demands for the aging McNabb.

Update: According to the Star-Ledger, New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora has shown up for the Giants' voluntary offseason training program, but is experiencing pain in his hip. He suffered a torn hip flexor back in 2006, so this could be a related injury.
Fantasy Impact: Osi was clearly unhappy with his role last year, and has made it known he won't be happy with anything other than a startin role. Stay tuned for more on how this situation plays out.

I’ve long been an admirer of Michigan State coach Tom Izzo. It was obvious not long after he took over in East Lansing for Jud Heathcote that Izzo was one of the rising stars in college basketball.
Fifteen years and five Final Four appearances later, Izzo is among the top handful coaches in all of America, as well as the most consistently successful Big Ten coach since Bob Knight ruled the roost from the mid-70s through the late 1980s.
Perhaps even more impressive than his wins, his Big Ten titles, or his masterful ability to produce tournament success, however, is Tom Izzo’s ability to be captured candidly on film in hilariously expressive ways.
If you want some actual analysis of Izzo’s career and how it stacks up against his peers, go here. If you want to see the 20 most intense, funny pictures of Tom Izzo on the first 10 pages of a Google Image Search for his name, well here you go.

Update: Free Agent LB Joey Porter (Dolphins) has come to terms on a deal that will have him playing through the 2012 season in Arizona.
Fantasy Impact: Porter has played the last 3 seasons in Miami before having a falling out with the club. Some believe that the 11 year veteran has lost his step, Ken Whisenhunt however, The Cardinals Coach who was the offensive co-coordinator for Pittsburgh during Porters many seasons there, believes he still sees the same talent as when the LB played for him.

As you know, I enjoy a good sports show blooper, so I thank Dash over at Deadspin for finding this gem of a Tony Romo “interview” by a young, aspiring sports anchor at Romo’s alma mater Eastern Illinois.
I’m sure that bloopers like these are somehwat embarrassing for the people involved, but they generally provide harmless fun that you don’t have to feel guilty laughing at.
So, with that said, let’s all point at laugh at this Michael Pitt look-a-like as he desperately tries to interview Tony Romo.

Update: Drew Rosenhaus, the agent for wide receiver Terrell Owens, said Monday that he’s in “active discussions” with three NFL teams interested in signing the 14-year veteran.
Fantasy Impact: The clubs interested in TO have asked to remain undisclosed for the time being. Cincinnati had been expressing interest in signing TO for some time but eventually went in a different direction signing free agent WR Antonio Bryant.

Update: Adam Schefter, of ESPN, reports via Twitter that Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey said there will be an open competition for the team’s quarterback job between QBs Trent Edwards, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Brian Brohm.
Fantasy Impact: Edwards started for the club last season but was replaced at times by Fitzpatrick for poor play as well as injury problems, it will be a tight race to see who ends up starting for the team in 2010.

Update: The league has handed out the compensatory picks for the 2010 draft, and the final pick of the draft (pick #255) has been rewarded to the Detroit Lions.
Fantasy Impact: The compensatory picks are awarded to teams who have lost more free agents than they have signed, the Lions however didn’t do anything to deserve this pick, it has been awarded to them due to the current draft order. The Rams will receive pick #254.

This post is from 2010!!!
What an opening weekend.
I am sure that there have been opening weekends that have been as good or close to as a good, but I can’t imagine another NCAA Tournament opening weekend being better than what we just saw.
There were buzzer beaters, huge upsets, Cinderellas that lasted to the second weekend, tremendous individual performances, and just a lot of really, really good basketball. This weekend proved, once again, why the NCAA Tournament is the most exciting event in sports.
Now it is time for the second weekend, the Sweet 16 and then the Elite 8, and we have all of the TV schedule, announcer, and spread info you need.

When I hit the publish button after writing this post, it will conclude my series of eight Sweet 16 previews. So far, other than my pick of Northern Iowa over Michigan State because of the loss of Kalin Lucas, I’ve played it safe and gone with the favorites.
I love the stories of St. Mary’s and Cornell, but I think their Sweet 16 matchups dictate a planr flight home after one game this weekend.
Washington, on the other hand, is a double-digit seed that could very well play on after Thursday night. That is not a knock on their opponent, West Virginia, which is an outstanding team led by a superlative player in Da’Sean Butler.
Rather, it is a testament to just hot Washington is right now and to the benefit of having a duo like Isaiah Thomas and Quincy Pondexter, probably the most underrated 1-2 punch in the nation.
Can the Huskies pull off their third straight upset and make the Elite 8? Let’s analyze.

Six of the eight Sweet 16 games involve teams from the Midwest (or just outside the Midwest) that are right in our MSF wheelhouse. Previews and predictions for those six games have been completed, leaving me with two more previews that at first glance might not have much of a Midwest connection.
But, on the contrary, natives of the Hoosier state like myself should be taking at least a little bit of pride in the job that Scott Drew has done at Baylor. The perennial Big 12 doormats are now a legitimate Final Four contender, which is what happens when you hand the reins over to a guy who graduated from Butler and cut his coaching teeth with his dad at Valparaiso.
So while the college basketball world focuses on Omar Samhan and the Gaels this week, we here at MSF highlight one of our own. Now the question is can Drew lead Baylor through the regional gauntlet all the way back to his college stomping grounds for the Final 4 in Indianapolis?
Let’s take a look at the matchup.
