Bears ink Chester Taylor

Email Post Email Post

Update: ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting via Twitter that the Chicago Bears have signed free agent runningback Chester Taylor to a four-year deal. The deal will pay Taylor $12.7 million, including $7 million guaranteed in year one.  He will join Matt Forte in the Bears backfield.

Fantasy Impact:  The Bears overpaid here for Taylor, but knew that he has a laundry list of suitors seeking his services.  The addition now gives the Bears a change of pace back to tandem with Forte.

Vanden Bosch signs with Lions

Email Post Email Post

Update: ESPN is reporting that free agent defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch has signed a four-year contract with the Detroit Lions worth an estimated $26 million. Vanden Bosch is 31 years old.

Fantasy Impact:  The Lions needed to make a big move in free agency, and this is a nice start.  Vanden Bosch should help provide some veteran leadership on a team that has won just two games in the past two years.

Colts re-sign Brackett

Email Post Email Post

Update: ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting via Twitter that the Indianapolis Colts have re-signed LB Gary Brackett to a five-year contract extension worth $33 million.  The deal will net Brackett a $12M signing bonus.

Fantasy Impact:  Brackett wanted to stay in Indy, and the team felt re-signing him was one of their top priorities.  He had 99 tackles for the Colts this season.

Manumaleuna signs with Bears

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Chicago Tribune is reporting that the Bear have signed free agent tight end Brandon Manumaleuna to a five-year contract . Manumaleuna uses his 6'2inch frame to act as one of the best blocking tight ends in football.

Fantasy Impact:  This signing could mean tight end Greg Olsen's days in a Bears uniform are numbered.

Eagles pay up for Weaver

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Philadephia Eagles have re- signed fullback Leonard Weaver to a three-year, $11 million deal, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.  Reports are that $6.5M is guaranteed money in the deal.

Fantasy Impact:  Weaver gets the biggest pay day any fullback has ever gotten, and the Eagles finally keep a player in their organization by dishing out big dollars.

2 Free agents to visit Bears

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to ESPN's Adam Schefter the Chicago Bears will have free agents DE Julius Peppers and RB Chester Taylor visit on Friday.

Fantasy Impact: Julius Peppers is coveted by several teams and by no means is a lock to sign with the Bears, but Bears' fans have to be happy that their management is going out and trying to sign the top free agent. Chester Taylor could provide relief for Matt Forte in some games, but will have little to no fantasy value if he ends up in Chicago unless an injury happens.

Jake Delhomme cut by Panthers

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Carolina Panthers cut QB Jake Delhomme late Thursday. Delhomme's agent confirmed the move, and Delhomme will speak with reporters on Friday. Delhomme is still owed more than $12.5 million in guaranteed money after signing a lucrative contract last season. Last season Delhomme threw for 2015 yards, eight touchdowns, and 18 interceptions.

Fantasy Impact: Delhomme being cut by the Panthers gives Matt Moore the starting position for now, but with free-agency, draft picks, and possible trades (Michael Vick?) awaiting, all fantasy owners will have to wait to see who is the starting quarterback by training camp.

New York Jets land CB Cromartie

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to the Associated Press, the New York Jets have reached an agreement in principle with the San Diego Chargers to acquire CB Antonio Cromartie. The Jets confirmed the deal Thursday night, but didn't include specifics. It is believed that the Jets will send a 2011 draft pick to the Chargers.

Fantasy Impact: Antonio Cromartie was an All-Pro in 2007, and the Jets are hoping he returns to that form to team with Darrelle Revis, which could become the best cornerback duo in the NFL. Cromartie replaces Lito Sheppard, who was released earlier on Thursday.

Favre still undecided

Email Post Email Post

Update: Minnesota Vikings QB Brett Favre went on NBC's "Tonight Show" with Jay Leno and told Leno that he was still undecided. "Well Jay, it's only been a month, and I know now that I'm just not going to say anything anytime soon, just going to kind of sit back, relax, enjoy the offseason," said Favre. Favre also talked about how the loss to the New Orleans Saints lingers on his mind.

Fantasy Impact: Just as any other year, you will have to wait to see if Favre will return for another season. My gut prediction is Favre will return because he had such a good season and expects to contend for the Super Bowl next year.

Chiefs re-sign Vrabel

Update: According to the Kansas City Star, the Kansas City Chiefs re-sign LB Mike Vrabel hours before he was to become an unrestricted free agent. Vrabel joined the Chiefs last year as part of the trade that also brought quarterback Matt Cassel from New England.

Cardinals Release Rolle

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to NFL.com, the Arizona Cardinals released S Antrel Rolle on Thursday to avoid the $4 million roster bonus he was due had he been on the team as of 10 p.m. Thursday night and the additional $8.1 million salary due in the final year of his rookie contract. The Cardinals already extended a long-term contract offer, but Rolle wanted to see what his worth would be on the open market. The Chicago Tribune reported Rolle is seeking a contract worth $8 million a season, which would make him the highest-paid safety in the NFL. That same report said the Cards' offer was for an average of $6 million a season.

Fantasy Impact: Cardinals are strikingly thin at safety. Veteran Matt Ware, whom the Cards want to bring back, is also a free agent. Last year’s third-round draft pick, Rashad Johnson, hasn’t done enough to prove he’ll be able to replace Rolle if needed.

Bengals Release Coles

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to NFL.com, the Cincinnati Bengals cut WR Laveranues Coles on Thursday. The 32-year-old wide receiver struggled in his only year with the club (43 catches, 514 yards, five touchdowns). At a $7 million average for four years, Coles got nearly $10 million in bonus and salary last year to replace T.J. Houshmandzadeh, but didn't work. Coles suffered some drops early and fumbled on the first drive of the playoff game against the Jets.

7 Reasons Why Fantasy Baseball is Not for Losers

Email Post Email Post
why fantasy baseball is not for losers

I have played fantasy baseball for a long time.

My dad and I first co-managed a team way back when we got online using dial-up and signed in through Prodigy. (Holy crap that sounds like a long time ago.) For what it’s worth, we won that league, and I’ve played fantasy baseball every year since.

While I am excited about the mainstream acceptance that fantasy sports have attained, there are still prominent segments of society (read: most women and assorted douchebags) who look down upon those of us who enjoy fantasy sports. I have heard these massively misinformed people refer to me and my fantasy sports loving kind as “losers”.

Well, for any guys out there who are questioning whether or not they should sign up this year, I’m here to tell you that fantasy baseball is not for losers. Quite the contrary. In fact, I bet fantasy baseball provides benefits that most of those condescending women and douchebags never even considered.

This post aims to set the record straight and ensure that you, my fantasy baseball playing brother, register proudly and confidently for your league(s) this year.

Chargers Release Williams

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, San Diego Chargers' NT Jamal Williams, who had been with the Chargers for 12 seasons, will be released. Williams, 33, would have been owed a $1 million roster bonus and was scheduled to earn $5 million in 2010. He played in only one game last season due to a triceps injury suffered in the season opener.

Chargers Keep Sproles

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, San Diego Chargers' RB Darren Sproles had been notified last week the Chargers would not tender him as a restricted free agent and would allow him to test the market as an unrestricted free agent, but have now changed their mind. The move guarantees Sproles a salary of $7.27 million if he stays with the Chargers, unless the team can sign him to a long-term deal. He made $6.62 million last season as the Chargers' franchise player and is entitled to a 10 percent raise. A source said Sproles was scheduled to visit the Kansas City Chiefs this weekend and also St. Louis, Philadelphia and Washington.

Fantasy Impact: It is unlikely he will take those trips now, since any team signing him would have to give the Chargers a first-round and third-round pick.
