How strange is this year’s ACC mens basketball tournament going to seem?
Sure, perennial powers Duke and Maryland sit atop the conference and will enjoy their usual luxury of sitting out the first day of the tournament along with whichever teams finish 3rd and 4th in the regular season standings. But there will be a team playing during the ACC Tournament’s opening round that isn’t typically forced to play during a round usually received for ACC commoners, not royalty.
I’m speaking, of course, of the North Carolina Tar Heels.
North Carolina has surprised everyone by experiencing a severe post-championship hangover that has them currently sitting at 4-10 in the conference.
Still, would anyone be completely shocked if Roy Williams and his roster loaded with McDonald’s All-Americans righted the ship for four days to make a run at the ACC Tournament title?
Based on how poorly they have played, I would. But we’ve certainly seen more unlikely Cinderella stories develop during conference tournaments.
More than likely, either Duke or Maryland – the two teams that have clearly been the class of the conference and who have the top individual players – will end up etching their name as the 2010 ACC Tournament champions. To do so, they will need to maneuver through the gauntlet detailed below.
