49ers to slap Franchise Tag on Franklin

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to San Jose Mercury News, the San Francisco 49ers will use the franchise-tag designation on the teams' DT Aubrayo Franklin, according to a report Monday. Adam Schefter of ESPN.com, citing league sources, said the 49ers are poised to use the tag on Franklin if no multiyear agreement is in place by the Feb. 25 deadline for the franchise designation. The price tag for franchised defensive tackles is $7 million for 2010. "I'd like to be back here, but me and my agent are going to sit down and talk and look at the possibilities of the franchise tag,'' Franklin said. "We'll figure out the possibilities. "… I enjoy playing with these guys, and I feel like we have a really good defense."

Fantasy Impact: Franklin helped the 49ers finish sixth in the NFL in rushing yards allowed.

Bears Relieve DePaul

Update: According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the Chicago Bears announced Monday that senior director of pro personnel Bobby DePaul has been relieved of his duties. DePaul's role with the Bears included evaluating pro players for possible acquisition via trades, free agency and waiver-wire transactions while coordinating advance scouting of opponents. In addition, he helped out with the salary cap, contract negotiations and scouting technology. It's unknown whether the Bears plan to replace DePaul or if his duties would be absorbed by others within the organization. Given the importance of pro talent acquisition, it's likely the Bears will seek a replacement.

Amano Agrees to Multi-Year Contract with Titans

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to the Tennessean, Tennessee Titans' OL Eugene Amano agreed to terms on a multiyear contract with the Titans. His agent cautioned some details still needed to be worked out. The Titans have yet to announce the deal. “I am excited, just knowing I get to be a Titan for the next five years and hopefully win a championship,” Amano said. “It is also exciting to know my hard work has paid off and my coaches have confidence in me.’’ Amano started 15 games last season. The O-line paved the way for running back Chris Johnson’s 2,006 rushing yards and allowed only 15 sacks.

Fantasy Impact: Amano, a seventh-round pick by the Titans in 2004, has developed into a full-time starter versatile enough to play guard or center.

Williams Has Foot Surgery

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to NFL.com, Carolina Panthers' RB DeAngelo Williams had foot surgery on Monday. The ankle/foot problems sidelined him for the last two games of the season. Herald beat writer Darin Gantt noted that Williams played in the Pro Bowl, so the injuries likely weren’t serious. Dr. Robert Anderson, a foot and ankle specialist for the Panthers, performed the procedure.

Fantasy Impact: Williams, a four-year pro, still managed to rush for 1,117 yards and seven touchdowns in 13 games this past season. He had a career-high 1,515 rushing yards and 20 total TDs in 2008.

OT: “Embrace Life” Video Perhaps the Greatest PSA Ever

This has been out for a couple of weeks and I know that I saw it somewhere a few days ago, but I didn’t really see it. I just kind of glazed over it without really watching. Boy was that ever a mistake.

Thanks to Alyssa Gardina (via LaDonna Coy) I came across Osocio.org, a website that highlights social advertising and non-profit campaigns from across the web, like the one for Embrace Life that is the subject of this post.

I think the video below just might be the greatest public service announcement that I have ever seen.

Janikowski inks 4 year extension

Email Post Email Post

Update:  ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting on Twitter that the Oakland Raiders have agreed to terms with kicker Sebastian Janikowski on a four-year, $16 million contract. The deal includes $9 million guaranteed.

Fantasy Impact: Jankikowski will turn 32 this offseason, but has proved he is one of the most consistent kickers in the NFL.  He however managed just 17 PATs this past season.

Lions interested in Williams

Email Post Email Post

Update: Detroit Lions beat writer Tom Kowalski is reporting that he believes the team is interested in acquiring Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams this offseason.

Fantasy Impact: The Panthers have Jonathan Stewart in the mix so dealing Williams is not far fetched, but given both running backs have missed time due to injuries it is highly unlikely one of them would be moved this offseason.  This is nothing more than a pipe dream for Kowalski and Lions fans.

Saints expected to franchise Sharper

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to Pro Football Talk, the New Orleans Saints are expected to place their franchise tag on safety Darren Sharper this offseason.  The Saints clearly want to lock Sharper up as he is an integral part of the defense.

Fantasy Impact:  Sharper would make $6.4M with the franchise tag, and would guarantee he would spend at least one more season in New Orleans.

Bulger done in St. Louis

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to Pro Football Talk, rams quarterback Marc Bulger has cleaned out his locker.  His career appears to be in limbo, but at the very least he is done in St. Louis.

Fantasy Impact: The Bulger and the Rams went 1-15 in 2009 and he has clearly shown that he is no longer capable of being a starting quarterback.  Bulger might end up calling it a career.

NBA Trade Rumor: Amar’e Stoudemire to Cleveland? (Updated 2/16)

Email Post Email Post

If you haven’t heard of the Amar’e trades you are one of two, you either have no life whatsoever, or you have so much of a life you could barely pay attention.

So to get to the point, the deadline is under 60 hours away, and one of the league’s best big man is about to be moved, and I can tell you it’ll be at least to two destiniations:

  • Front-runner Cleveland
  • or passenger seat Miami

With much talk and confusion breaking loose, there needs to be someone to clear things up.

Ta-da, here I am! And here is what  has been going on as of late with Amar’e, Cleveland and Miami.

Taylor is SI’s choice

Email Post Email Post

Update: Peter King of Sports Illustrated believes that Vikings free agent running back Chester Taylor is "the hidden skill-position gem of the unrestricted free-agent crop."

Fantasy Impact:  Taylor has not seen a ton of work in Minnesota as Adrian Peterson is clearly the No. 1 guy.  Washington and Detroit could be potential suitors for Taylor, and if the Eagles cut Brian Westbrook, they could also possibly be interested in a versatile back to compliment Shady McCoy.

Green thinks he’s returning to Packers

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Kenosha News is reporting that free agent running back Ahman Green believes the Green Bay Packers will sign him for the 2010 season.   When asked about his status, Green replied, "sounds like I’ll be back".

Fantasy Impact:  Most of the Packers writers believe that Green is done in Green Bay as the team already has Ryan Grant and Brandon Jackson in the mix, and Green is 33 years old.

Rideau heads to CFL

Email Post Email Post

Update: Former Chicago Bears wide receiver Brandon Rideau has signed with the CFL's Toronto Argonauts, according to TSN.ca.

Fantasy Impact: Rideau will not be missed in Chicago.  He was nothing more than a practice body, and has yet to ever catch a pass in the NFL.  He is 27 years old, and seems much more likely to make an impact in the CFL than in the NFL.

Is Blackhawks’ Antti Niemi Ready for Starting Position?

Email Post Email Post
antti-niemi-blackhawks

Another win by the Blackhawks, their fourth straight, and I’m beginning to believe that Antti Niemi is starting to shed his back-up role as a goaltender.

Niemi has looked sharp in net the past four games. He has come up huge in two shootouts, one in Columbus and one at home against Atlanta. While his goals against average has risen during this four game stretch, he has won every single game and has stopped 11 of 12 skaters in a shootout.

Most importantly he is doing what every team needs their goalie to do: come up big in clutch plays.
