It seems the Bears’ players are already liking their new offensive coordinator. Martz has been praised by most Bears players and seems to have developed really good chemistry between WR Earl Bennett, and QB Jay Cutler.

“He made a great impression,” Bennett told chicagobears.com about his meeting with Martz at Halas Hall on Monday, the coach’s first full day at the office. “He’s a mastermind offensive coach who’s going to spread the ball around and wants to take us to that next level. I’m ready to work hard for him.”

This is a very good thing to hear because a rejuvenated offense will only help the Bears in their cause to get into the playoffs next year.

Orton to Remain Broncos QB

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to the Denver Post, Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen says the plan is for QB Kyle Orton to remain the Broncos' quarterback next season, but the team hopes to select another quarterback in the upcoming draft. "I want Kyle back," Bowlen said. "Orton is a good quarterback. I'd also like to think we might have the opportunity to draft a young quarterback, not necessarily to come in and play right away, but if you have the opportunity to draft somebody, that would be a plus for us."

Bowlen Wants Marshall to Remain with Broncos

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to the Denver Post, Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen says he would like star WR Brandon Marshall to remain with the Broncos, but would not block a trade if head coach Josh McDaniels feels it would benefit the team. Bowlen said he wasn't troubled by McDaniels' decision to bench Marshall and Tony Scheffler in the season's final game, saying it was necessary for a young coach to assert authority. "I think Brandon is going through a maturing process," Bowlen said. "Personally, I saw change in his personality and approach to things (this past season). He didn't have the same sort of attitude and anxiety that he's had. I personally would like to see him stay. And there's still a good possibility that could happen." When asked if Marshall would return on a one-year deal next season, Bowlen says "I'd like to see Brandon stay," Bowlen said. "Now, if the head coach sits down and says no, I want to trade him, or I've got a deal that's going to be beneficial to the club, I don't think I'm going to override him.

Raiders Hire Pendergast as DB Coach

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to the Oakland Tribune, the Oakland Raiders name Clancy Pendergast as the team's new defensive backs coach Monday. Pendergast, 42, has coached in the NFL for the past 15 years, working as a defensive coordinator the last six years. He was with the Kansas City Chiefs last season and the Arizona Cardinals from 2004-08. Pendergast replaces longtime secondary coach Willie Brown, who announced his retirement soon after last season ended.

Fantasy Impact: Pendergast is the third assistant coach hired since the end of the regular season. He joins Mike Waufle (defensive line coach) and Hue Jackson (offensive coordinator).

Peppers Does Not Want Long-Term Deal

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to the Roch Hill Herald, Carolina Panthers' DE Julius Peppers expressed he did not want stay wit the team long-term. “They’re not even talking to me, so why would I come out and say I want to be here, when the team is not even acknowledging the fact that my future with the organization is up in the air.”

Fantasy Impact: The Panthers could use a franchise tag on Peppers with hopes of making a trade between Feb. 11 and Feb. 25. The league year begins March 5, so if Peppers isn’t tagged he’d become an unrestricted free agent.

Browns Terminate Stallworth’s Contract

Update: According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Cleveland Browns have decided to terminate WR Dante Stallworth's contract Monday. This came the same day he was reinstated by the NFL after his season-long suspension without pay for killing a pedestrian while driving drunk. Stallworth, who was under contract with the Browns through 2014, is now free to sign with any team. Stallworth was signed by former General Manager Phil Savage to a seven-year, $35 million contract in 2008.

Martz wants Olsen to block more

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to Pro Football Talk, Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz suggested that Greg Olsen will be asked to block much more than he has in the past. "All tight ends, their first responsibility, they have to put their hand down on the line of scrimmage and be a successful blocker, and then they move to receiving," Martz said. "To just skip by that and say, 'He's a terrific receiver,' well, then you might as well just put another wide receiver in there."

Fantasy Impact: Olsen had eight touchdowns last year, and it looks like that number might not be realistic for him again this coming season with Martz at the helm.  Fantasy owners should take this into consideration when thinking about taking Olsen as your tight end.

Martz to limit Hester’s role

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to Pro Football Talk, Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz indicated that he plans to reduce Devin Hester role on offense slightly so that Hester can focus more on special teams, . "It would be very difficult for [Hester] to play every snap on offense and still play effectively on special teams," Martz said.

Fantasy Impact: Hester will see a reduced role at the wideout position, and hopefully that can help him become the special teams threat that put him on the map.

Chris Berman May Leave ESPN…but He’ll Never Escape YouTube

Reports started popping up yesterday all over the Interwebs on various blog posting sites that ESPN legend Chris Berman might leave the network that he helped build into the “Worldwide Leader”.

Boomer is reportedly mulling over offers from the NFL Network and DirectTV right now (in between healthy bites of ham sandwiches smothered in pickle relish…but that’s merely speculation on my part.)

What would Berman’s departure mean for ESPN and the landscape of sports media? Who cares!? This is the perfect opportunity to show you leaked ESPN video of Berman being a complete jerk.

Beating a Dead Horse: Colts Fans Are The Worst

Email Post Email Post
matt-ellis-colts-tattoos

Before the Super Bowl on Sunday, I became aware of the rumor that many a Colts fan were concerned about the upcoming snowstorm; and more specifically, whether or not it would affect their Super Bowl parade.

As it turns out, it will be twenty-eight degrees and snowy in Indianapolis today, with a zero percent chance of fandom. A parade, by definition, is unlikely.

After living in Indy from 2003 to 2009, I realized two things:

1) That John Cougar Mellencamp is not nearly as popular or talented as Hoosiers think; and

2) The Colts have the worst fans in football. Their display of “appreciation” yesterday further proved it.

Favre drama beginning already

Email Post Email Post

Update: ESPN's Adam Schefter tweeted on Monday morning that his guess is that Brett Favre will indeed play again next season.

Fantasy Impact: This is just the beginning of the Favre drama this offseason.  Chances are the Vikings are willing to give Brett all the time he needs to make up his mind, as they really have no better option at quarterback.

McNabb drawing interest

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Philadelphia Daily News is reporting that the Browns, Bills and Broncos are among the teams that have already had discussions with the Eagles regarding Donovan McNabb's availability.

Fantasy Impact: The Birds have a logjam at the QB position with McNabb, Kevin Kolb, and Michael Vick.  The issue is all of them are heading into the final year of their contracts.  The Eagles are swearing they are keeping McNabb, but that just seems like a ploy to drive up the asking price.

Saints to decide on Bush

Email Post Email Post

Update: New Orleans Saints running back Reggie Bush rushed for 25 yards on Sunday night, and caught four balls out of the backfield for 38 yards.  The Saints put the ball in the air more times than not, so the ground game never really go going, and Pierre Thomas led the Saints with 15 carries in the ground game.

Fantasy Impact: Bush is slated to make $8M next season, and it will be interesting to see if the Saints ante up and keep Bush as a versatile player, or if they choose to move on to someone less expensive to spell Pierre Thomas.
