Panthers won’t franchise Peppers

Email Post Email Post

Update:  The Carolina Panthers are not expected to use their franchise tag on Julius Peppers this offseason, according to Pro Football Talk.

Fantasy Impact: This is good news for Peppers who has fought with the team year after year about the franchise tag.  He wants to move on, and it looks like he is finally going to get his chance.  By not tagging Peppers the Panthers will not get compensation should another team sign him, but it also ensures that they won't be on the hook for $21.8 million which is what they would owe him should another team not sign him to an offer sheet.

Fantasy Impact: The Bengals also are showing interest in Done Stallworth.  Jones will join Chad Ochocinco, Laveranues Coles and Andre Caldwell, and should push Coles and Caldwell for playing time.

NBA Slam Dunk Contest Preview: Participants, Videos, TV & Past Winners

nba slam dunk contest preview - tv time, participants, videos, past winners and champions, eric gordon

Tomorrow night is the most exciting night of the NBA’s annual All Star Weekend.

Sure, the actual All Star game itself is fun seeing as how it is the world’s most talented basketball players playing in a laid back pickup game, but I’ve always been more intrigued by the Slam Dunk Contest and the 3-Point Shootout.

This year, I might be even more intrigued by the Slam Dunk Contest if a certain former Hoosier ends up making the final cut.

Eric Gordon, currently in his second season of basketball purgatory with the LA Clippers, faces off against DeMar DeRozan of the Raptors at halftime of the Rookie/Sophomore Challenge tomorrow night for the right to participate in Dunk Contest.

2010 Fantasy Baseball Sleeper Picks: Infielders

Email Post Email Post
fantasy baseball sleeper picks - todd helton, alberto callaspo, asdrubal cabrera, kelly johnson

Yesterday, my series on 2010 fantasy baseball sleeper picks was introduced here on MSF. I provided my methodology and a couple of high value picks at the catcher position: Geovany Soto and Ryan Doumit.

Today, we take a trip around the infield and highlight a few more players who could provide you with significantly more value than their current average draft position suggests.

Among the Midwesterners highlighted in today’s edition: Alberto Callaspo of the Kansas City Royals and Asdrubal Cabrera of the Cleveland Indians, both of whom could be primed to surprise at the middle infield spots this season.

Also included is the answer to a trivia question that will interest the Colts fans out there: who was the QB at the University of Tennessee before Peyton Manning took over midway through his freshman season? Hint: he’s a potentially strong value play at 1B this season and plays his home games in Coors Field.

Colts’ GM Blames Special Teams and O-Line

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to ESPN.com, Indianapolis Colts' president Bill Polian is playing the blame game after his team loss 31-17 to the New Orleans Saints in the Super Bowl. The offensive line and special teams are to blame for the loss, Polian told the Colts' Web site on Wednesday. "Our offensive line, by our standards, did not have a good game," Polian told NFL.com.

"They were outplayed by the Saints' defensive line. Our special teams, in terms of handing the ball — both in the return game and on the onside kick — were outplayed by the Saints. Therein lies the result. It had nothing to do with strategy or preparedness or toughness or effort."

Robinson a Priority for Texans

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to the Houston Chronicle, Houston Texans' CB Dunta Robinson will become an unrestricted free agent on March 5. Robinson was the franchise player last season. If they want to re-sign him, they may have to franchise him again and hope they can work out a long-term deal, unlike last year when they failed to reach an agreement. Players can be franchised as early as today and as late as Feb. 25. “That's something that will be addressed later,” McNair said. “(General manager) Rick Smith will be looking at that and visiting with Gary and seeing what the situation is.”

Texans make Kubiak’s Three-Year Contract Official

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to the Houston Chronicle, the Houston Texans made it official on Wednesday that head coach Gary Kubiak has signed a new three-year contract through 2012. Terms were not disclosed. “Gary said it wasn't enough, and I said it was too much,” owner Bob McNair said. “I believe Gary can take us to the Super Bowl."

“The good news is that we have a foundation in place. I think we're going to continue to make progress. We'll operate the same way. We'll continue to build through the draft. I think we had 14 starters who came through the draft. As for free agency, we'll go through (the scouting) process and see if there's anybody out there that'll strengthen us, and if so, we'll try to bring them in.”

Esiason says Bengals should Dump Ochocinco

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to Dayton Daily News, former Bengals quarterback Boomer Esiason says he is not a fan of Cincinnati Bengals WR Chad Ochocinco. Esiason goes on to say that Chad is all about Chad — not the team. He said the Bengals should part ways with Ochocinco now, but pointed out that head coach Marvin Lewis probably doesn’t have the authority to cut or even properly discipline Chad because of heavy-handed owner Mike Brown.

Giants release LB Pierce

Email Post Email Post

Update: Newsday is reporting that the New York Giants have released middle linebacker Antonio Pierce, the defensive captain said in an e-mail this afternoon.

Fantasy Impact:  This is a shocking move for the Giants.  Pierce battled some injuries this season, but a straight out release comes as a surprise.

Saints may part ways with Grant

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, defensive end Charles Grant is a candidate to be released this offseason by the Saints due to his high salary and lack of production.

Fantasy Impact:  Grant had yet another surgery on his triceps, and most likely will be asked to take a pay cut so he cant stay with the team.  It will be interesting to see if Grant agrees to a pay cut so he cant stay in New Orleans or if he wants to test the free agent market as a 31 year old veteran.

Cowboys still believe in Williams

Email Post Email Post

Update: ESPN is reporting that Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett says he still has confidence in struggling receiver Roy Williams.  Williams had yet another disappointing season with the Cowboys.

Fantasy Impact:  Williams was a stud in Detroit, but since coming to the Cowboys has failed to produce.  He watched Miles Austin take over as the go to wideout in Dallas last season.
