WWSC: Open Letter to Cubs Management

[Editor's Note: What follows is the fourth edition of a new series of regular posts that you will start to see here on MSF called Wendell Willkie's Spam Cleansing (WWSC for short).

Throughout the day I participate in email conversations with friends about hot sports topics. One of my friends in particular is very active in these conversations. This is that friend.]

Dear Jim Hendry and Lou Piniella,

Clearly it is easier identifying a quality OF who actually has an IMPACT on the lineup than a 2B.  With this in mind, please convince the “me first” and overpaid Alfonso Soriano to move back to his old position– 2B!!  While it is cute to trot out offensively impotent two-baggers like Mike Fontenot and Aaron Miles, it is painful watching someone play 74 games and have a .224 OBP like Miles did last season.

Moving Soriano to 2B would make Soriano’s contract almost palatable and would open up an OF spot to sign a free agent. Again, any random OF free agent is superior to the majority of current 2B in the league. Conveniently Jermaine Dye remains available. Think swapping Jermaine Dye’s production for what Miles/Fontenot created last year would have a positive impact???

Regards,

Sandberg

P.S. Please also consider moving Soriano in the batting order, moving him to the 2 or 3 slot would improve the offense. (Note: (this was a response to Wendell’s email, copied to all of us on the chain)

Wendell’s response: Sweet Lou announced over the weekend at the Cubs convention that Soriano will be batting in the 6 spot, behind the recently acquired Marlon Byrd. Good riddance.

**********

Who is Wendell Willkie? Wouldn’t you like to know.

The pseudonym was inspired by the very Wendell Willkie who is an Indiana University legend and democrat turncoat who ran for president against FDR in 1940; however, the man behind the pseuodonym shall otherwise remain nameless.

Jerod simply posts WW’s ramblings here to help unclog his inbox (hence, the spam cleansing) and because there are occasional nuggets of insight that provide good jumping off points for conversation.

So go, converse. WW will undoubtedly be back soon with more email ramblings…
