Ohio State Buckeyes Basketball Team Experiencing a ‘Turneround’

The ugly fall Evan Turner took December 5th at home against Western Michigan had, well, everything ugly written all over it.

Watching the star guard writhe in pain below the basket added to the nastiness and Turner being unable to walk himself off the court to the locker room didn’t look good. The arena was silent the whole time and there was concern everywhere.

Obviously fans were concerned for the team’s success this season, but there was also plenty of concern for Turner’s future because he had injured his back. And over the past 18 months, Turner’s career has begun to look bright enough to include being some team’s star in the NBA.

Breaking vertebrae just sounds ugly and nothing good can come of that, right?

Wrong.

Jets Defense a Little Banged Up

Email Post Email Post

Update: ESPN's Tim Graham reports that New York Jets LB Bart Scott was limping noticeably and favoring his heavily-taped left ankle during Wednesday's practice. Scott ranked second on the Jets in tackles (107) and tackles for losses (12) in the regular season. In addition, DE Shaun Ellis was also limited with his broken left hand wrapped in a cocoon of black tape. Ellis led the Jets with 6.5 sacks and 18 quarterback hits during the regular season.

Fantasy Impact: Ellis broke his hand on the first defensive play of Sunday's playoff win over the Chargers.  He plans to play in Sunday's AFC Championship in Indianapolis.  Scott's status for Sunday is unknown, but it appears he will attempt to play.  Monitor both players going into Sunday as they do have value in IDP formats.  The Jets DST has its biggest test of the season as they look to stop Colts QB Peyton Manning.  Normally they are a #1 unit in all formats.

Earlier this afternoon I had the pleasure of recording a podcast with Seth Davis, college basketball writer for SI.com and studio analyst for CBS Sports.

And let me just say right off the bat for all the IU fans out there: you will be encouraged by what Seth has to say about Tom Crean and the future of IU basketball.

We also discuss fans storming the court, Purdue’s viability as a Final Four contender, Ohio State’s ceiling with a healthy Evan Turner, and whether or not this is finally the year that Northwestern makes the NCAA Tournament.

Have a listen.

Steve Smith Replaces Fitzgerald in Pro Bowl

Email Post Email Post

Update: The New York Post reports that Giants WR Steve Smith, who led the NFC and shattered the Giants’ single-season record with 107 catches in 2009, has been added to the NFC Pro Bowl squad as an injury replacement for Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald. Smith’s 1,220 receiving yards were the 2nd highest total in franchise history.

Fantasy Impact: Smith broke out in his 3rd NFL season and is the go-to receiver for Giants QB Eli Manning. He should be drafted in the 3rd or 4th rounds in 2010 as a quality #1 option.

Stewart Having Foot Surgery

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Charlotte Observer reports that Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart said on his twitter account that he's undergoing surgery on his foot Wednesday. He played last season with ongoing pain in his Achilles, but led the team in rushing with 1,133 yards. He didn't finish the final game against New Orleans, saying he "re-tweaked" the Achilles during the game.

Fantasy Impact: Stewart and fellow Panther DeAngelo Williams are the league's most explosive RB duo. Williams has to be concerned about his status as the team's #1 back considering how the 2009 season finished. Stewart rushed for 440 yards and 3 TDs in the final three weeks while Williams had six carries for 13 yards sitting out the final two weeks with a sprained ankle. Keep a close eye on this RB situation in the off-season. Assuming Stewart makes a full recovery, 2010 could be the year he overtakes Williams as the Panthers' go-to back.

Schaub To Replace Brady in Pro Bowl

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to NFL.com, Houston Texans QB Matt Schaub has been named as an AFC Pro Bowl replacement for Patriots QB Tom Brady, who pulled out due to rib and finger injuries he played through for much of the season.

Fantasy Impact: Schaub had a nice season in spite of losing his TE Owen Daniels mid-season to a severe knee injury and having a poor running game all season long.  He does have the luxury of throwing to WR Andre Johnson, arguably the best receiver in the league.  Hopefully, Daniels will make a full recovery from his torn ACL and the Texans will work on upgrading their running back situation in the off-season.  Schaub should be drafted in the middle rounds as a decent #1 option in 2010.

Saints Promote Arrington from Practice Squad

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Times-Picayune reports that the New Orleans Saints filled their open roster spot Wednesday with former Michigan WR Adrian Arrington, who has spent the entire season on the practice squad. They signed former LSU DT Marlon Favorite to the practice squad to replace Arrington.

Fantasy Impact: The roster spot opened Tuesday when the Saints placed RB Deuce McAllister on the retired list.  Neither Arrington nor Favorite have any fantasy value.

T. Newman Added to Pro Bowl as Replacement

Email Post Email Post

Update: Adam Schefter reports on Twitter that Cowboys CB Terence Newman was added to NFC Pro Bowl team on Wednesday as a replacement for injured Cardinals CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.

Fantasy Impact: Newman has anchored the Cowboys secondary ever since they drafted him with the fifth overall pick in the 2002 draft.  This is his 2nd Pro Bowl invitation; the other was in 2007.  Sunday's 34-3 beatdown at the hands of the Vikings left the Cowboys DST with a lot to think about during the off-season.  They have a solid front seven and should be a dependable #1 unit in 2010.

Jets to Keep Braylon

Email Post Email Post

Update: Bob Glauber and Roderick Boone, of Newsday report that the New York Jets are planning to keep WR Braylon Edwards as a restricted free agent.

Fantasy Impact: Braylon's productivity was up and down this season as a Jet, scoring TD's one game then dropping them the next. With some good coaching and more consistency Braylon could help give Sanchez more confidence throwing the ball in the future.

Raiders Interview Hue Jackson

Email Post Email Post

Update: Adam Schefter of the of ESPN reports via twitter that The Oakland Raiders will be interviewing Baltimore Ravens QB Coach Hue Jackson for their vacant Offensive Coordinator position.

Fantasy Impact: Jackson has been a huge part in the evolution of young Baltimore QB Joe Flacco who has led his Ravens to the playoffs in both his seasons in the league, including a playoff win as a rookie and again this year.

LT Will Play in 2010

Email Post Email Post

Update: Kevin Acee, of The San Diego Tribune reports that LaDainian Tomlinson said he will be back in the NFL next season.

Fantasy Impact: The aging running back has seen decreased productivity and decreased touches due to this and could be playing for a new club next season.

Onus on Sanchez and Jets, Not Colts, to Prove They Belong on Sunday

Email Post Email Post
2010-nfl-predictions-jets-will-miss-playoffs

I’m not going to get cliché like the preview shows and talk about the obligatory “keys to the game,” but will say that the overall onus Sunday afternoon is on the Jets.

As the prohibitive favorite who’s undefeated in games their starters finish, Indy has nothing to prove; the Jets do.

Mark Sanchez must be better than he was in San Diego; the Jet running game must be just as good, as must the defense be, especially in pass coverage, where the Jets do excel.

On that topic, while Peyton Manning just needs to be himself, Reggie Wayne, who will be covered by Darrelle Revis, needs to have at least four or five catches, while Austin Collie must perform strongly, and Pierre Garcon especially must be better than he was against the Ravens. Revis shuts everyone down (Ochocinco, Johnson, Moss twice), and he likely will Wayne too.

Many local columnists here feel the Colts may get their “comeuppance” versus the Jets after the home team allowed New York into the postseason when starters were pulled on December 27th. But clearly the Jets belong in the postseason tournament, that game notwithstanding.

NFC Title Game Preview: Vikings-Saints Spread, Pick, and Analysis

Email Post Email Post
saints-vikings-spread-pick

Turns out we could’ve skipped the last several weeks of the season and the first two rounds of the NFC playoffs after all.

From about early November, it was almost a foregone conclusion that the Vikings and Saints would meet in the NFC Championship game, and here they are set to play on Sunday for the right to go to the Super Bowl.

Both teams had their hiccups throughout the season, but both teams have an immense amount of talent on both sides of the ball.

We’ve seen more dud games than not so far in these playoffs, but Minnesota-New Orleans sure doesn’t seem like it will follow that trend.

Addai Does Little Against Ravens

Email Post Email Post

Update:  Colts RB Joseph Addai had 11 carries for 23 yards in Sunday's playoff win against the Ravens.  He also caught three balls for 14 yards.

Fantasy Impact:  Addai had a less-than-spectacular regular season with 1164 combined rushing and receiving yards.  He did score 13 TDs.  It was an improvement from his injury-plagued 2008 season, but the Colts as a team in 2009 finished dead last in the NFL in rushing yards.  It doesn't get any easier for Addai this Sunday as he faces the New York Jets #1 ranked defense.  Continue to use him as a #2 option.

Offseason Key For Freeman

Email Post Email Post

UPDATE: Rick Stroud of The St. Petersburg Times reports that Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Josh Freeman likely will improve as he becomes more comfortable with the offense and the receivers and learns from the mistakes he made in 2009. But he also needs to improve his mechanics, including footwork. "I see myself making leaps and bounds in (accuracy and mechanics)," Freeman said. "That comes with confidence. When you're out there worrying about protections, when you're worried about everything else, you're not going to be going through your progressions clearly. "And if you're not going through your progressions clearly, you either lock onto a guy or you see someone flash and you don't always make the best decision or the most accurate pass."

FANTASY IMPACT: Although Freeman’s completion percentage (54.6 percent) led all first-round rookie quarterbacks, his 18 interceptions was the fourth most in the NFL. The Buccaneers offense was horrible this year, ranking thirtieth in points scored per game at 15.2. Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris plans to build around Freeman through the draft. Though a better offensive line and wide receivers will help, Freeman needs to improve his mechanics and decision-making first and foremost.
