Sharper Rests Wednesday

Update: Jeff Duncan of the Times-Picayune reports via Twitter that Saints FS Darren Sharper (knee) was a late addition to the injury report and did not practice Wednesday. "I wouldn't read too much into it," writes Duncan. "More of a senior citizen's day off."

Fantasy Impact: Sharper should be ready when the Saints face the Vikings Sunday in the NFC title game.  He will be fired up to play against the team that dumped him last year.

Clark Limited Due to Illness

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to the team website, Indianapolis Colts TE Dallas Clark was limited in Wednesday's practice due to an illness.  Clark had 7 receptions for 59 yards Saturday against the Ravens.

Fantasy Impact: By all accounts, "The Sheriff" will be fine for the AFC title game on Sunday.  Colts QB Peyton Manning will look for his favorite target with Jets CB Darrelle Revis set on taking Colts WR Reggie Wayne out of the game.  Clark is the most reliable TE in fantasy and should always be started when active.

Gore Replaces Jackson in Pro Bowl

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Press Democrat reports that San Francisco 49ers RB Frank Gore will replace Rams RB Steven Jackson on the NFC Pro Bowl team. Jackson played much of the latter part of the season with a back injury.

Fantasy Impact: Gore also made the Pro Bowl in 2006 when he rushed for a franchise record 1,695 yards. Despite missing three games due to injury, he put up big rushing numbers in 2009 finishing with 1,120 yards rushing and 10 TDs. He also caught 52 balls for 406 yards and 3 TDs. Obviously, the key for Gore is staying healthy.  Because of his versatility and the monopoly he has on rushing attempts for the 49ers, Gore is a top tier #1 option in all formats and should be drafted in the first or second round in 2010.

Jets Must Play Better This Time Around

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to NorthJersey.com, the New York Jets won the first round with a 29-15 win against the Indianapolis Colts toward the end of the regular season. But this time, Colts' QB Peyton Manning won't be standing on the sidelines as with the other Colts' starters. Even though the Jets won, the Colts had a 15-10 lead when Manning was pulled out of the game. The Jets running game also didn't improve until Manning was removed, 136 of their 202 yards came on the ground after Colts' back-up QB Curtis Painter entered the game.

Fantasy Impact: Jets must play better if they want to beat the number-one seeded Colts.

Colts Secondary Dealing with Nagging Injuries

Email Post Email Post

Update: ProFootballTalk.com reports that Colts CB Jerraud Powers was held out of Wednesday's practice with a foot injury. Colts FS Antoine Bethea (back) was a limited participant.

Fantasy Impact: Hopefully, both of these guys will be ready to face the Jets on Sunday in the AFC Championship.  With SS Bob Sanders out , the Colts cannot afford to have two key members of their secondary sitting on the sidelines.  Led by a strong defensive front, the Colts DST is a good starting option this Sunday in playoff formats.  They should be a decent unit in 2010 as well.

UC Star Signs with Bengals

Update: According to the Dayton Daily News, a few days after the team's season came to an end, the Cincinnati Bengals signed former University of Cincinnati CB Mike Mickens to a two-year contract on Friday. Mickens had a standout career at the UC before being picked in the seventh round by Dallas in the 2009 draft. The cornerback did not see regular-season action in ’09 but played in all four preseason games for the Cowboys. “It feels real good to be back home,” Mickens said in an interview on Sunday. “I played my last four years of college football in Cincinnati and have family close by to watch me play. So coming home means a lot. It’s something that you always dream of, a chance to play in front of your hometown people.”

Fantasy Impact: The 6-foot, 175-pound Mickens was considered a first-round talent until a torn meniscus in his knee forced him to miss the final three regular-season games for the Bearcats in 2008.

Gailey to Boast Bills’ Offense

Email Post Email Post

Update: Allen Wilson of the Buffalo News reports that the Buffalo Bills have ranked in the bottom eight of the NFL on offense for seven consecutive seasons, finishing 30th in 2009. Bills' GM Buddy Nix believes that Bills' new head coach, Chan Gailey, brings a wealth of experience as an offensive guru in the NFL. In Gailey's nine years as a coordinator, including two seasons as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, his offenses ranked 11th or better in scoring six times and finished 15th or better in yards gained five times. "Without any doubt in my mind, we got the best qualified guy, a guy that was on the list early," Nix said during Tuesday's news conference at the Bills' practice facility. "We got the right guy for us."

Fantasy Impact: Gailey said Tuesday that establishing a good running game is at the core of his offensive beliefs.

Mincey played at Florida and was a sixth-round pick by the New England Patriots in 2006. Mincey, 6-foot-3, 270 pounds, spent parts of the last three seasons with the Jaguars. He played in six games in 2007 and three in 2008, but was released before the 2009 season. Crummey, a 6-foot-5, 301-pound guard/center from Maryland, has spent time with Washington, Cincinnati and Houston. He played six games for the Bengals as a rookie in 2008 and spent most of last season on Houston's practice squad.

Update: Steve Corkran of the Oakland Tribune reports that the Oakland Raiders interviewed Mike Waufle to be the defensive line coach with the team. Waufle, who was the Raiders' former defensive line coach, will interview for Oakland's defensive line job held by Dwaine Board last season. Waufle was the Raiders defensive line coach from 1998-2003. He was fired by the New York Giants on Jan. 6 after spending the past six seasons as their defensive line coach.

McAllister to Announce Retirement

Email Post Email Post

Update: Mike Triplett of The Times-Picayune reports that New Orleans Saints' RB Deuce McAllister will announce his retirement today. Saints need his roster spot to sign a receiver because of the uncertainty of Robert Meachem's ankle injury. So McAllister decided that last week's cameo with the Saints would be a good note to end his career on. "If I get another shot (in the future), then so be it. But even before all this occurred, I was leaning toward retiring anyway," McAllister said. "I was hoping to play again, but I may need another surgery on my knee if I go that direction, and I don't want to do that."

Harbaugh Not Interested in Raiders

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to ESPN.com, the Oakland Raiders have spoken to Stanford head coach about becoming the Raiders' new head coach, but Harbaugh showed no interest in the position.

Fantasy Impact: Tom Cable's status as Oakland's head coach remains uncertain at best. He was scheduled to meet with owner Al Davis last week, but the meeting did not take place. The future of Cable and his staff remains up in the air until that meeting occurs.

Brees, Saints To Pick ex-Viking Sharper’s Brain

Email Post Email Post

Update: Jeff Duncan reports via Twitter that Saints LB Jonathan Vilma said Wedneday that Saints S Darren Sharper will be the guy all Saints players go to for the scouting report on the Vikings. Brees will pick Sharper's brain on everything from coverage schemes, formations, and audibles.

Fantasy Impact: Sharper was QB Brett Favre's teammate in Green Bay for eight seasons (1997-2004) and spent four years as a member of the Vikings (2005-2008) prior to joining the Saints in 2009.  If anyone knows the Vikings defense and Favre, it's Sharper. Maybe a little inside information will help Brees, who told Duncan that '"these guys [Vikings] have one of the best defensive fronts, if not the best, in the league."

Meachem, Shockey Miss Practice Wednesday

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Times-Picayune's Jeff Duncan reports on Twitter that New Orleans Saints WR Robert Meachem (ankle) and TE Jeremy Shockey (knee) did not practice Wednesday. Saints coach Sean Payton said he doesn't see Meachem's injury as significant, and he thinks the chances of getting Shockey to 100% healthy are "good."

Fantasy Impact: Shockey limped his way to three catches, 36 yards and a TD in Saturday's blowout win over the Cardinals. Expect him to tough out Sunday's NFC Championship game vs. the Vikings. Meachem went catchless Saturday, but he should get more involved this Sunday in what should be a closer game for the Saints.
