Haiti has endured a long history of hardships. As the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, 80 percent of Haiti’s population is living below the poverty line, surviving on less than $2 a day. Following decades of political instability, corruption, economic injustice and natural disasters, Haiti was further devastated in 2008 by a series of tropical storms and hurricanes.

Thanks Darrell. It is mind-boggling, and sadly, there is just no efficient way to get the people what they need right now. Hopefully some of the logistical problems can be worked around in the coming days.

Well said. The sad part, as my girlfriend point out to me last night, is that there are millions of people suffering right here in our own country too who need help. I guess sometimes it takes the jarring images and stories we're seeing from Haiti to galvanize action. Either way, it's just a terrible story and hopefully some good somewhere can come out of this. I don't know how, where, when, or why that could happen…but I think the people of Haiti deserve something good. You're right…a lot of us may not be rolling in cash ourselves, but we are certainly 100X better off than the majority of the Haitian population, especially now and even before the quake. What amounts to little more than few bucks to us would go a long way towards helping the recovery and rebuilding effort.
