NFL Power Rankings – Week 17: Requiem for an Undefeated Season

Email Post Email Post
nfl-power-rankings-week-17

Well all, it’s here.

This is the final Power Rankings of the Year, and with it comes major shake-ups to the top Five, as the last of the undefeateds have fallen.

I want to thank all of my readers for your support through this season, and I look forward already to next season’s power rankings.

(On a special side note, congrats go to Cleveland for winning their third straight. Perhaps mentioning them in my Power Rankings has been good luck for the Browns; perhaps Mike Holmgren needs to be made aware of this and he could send a little compensation my way :-D.)

Two More Reasons to Hate Colts Fans: Petulance and Patriots Envy

Email Post Email Post
16-0 banner

This has gotten ridiculous.

Colts fans (for whom we previously counted down reasons why they suck) have officially lost all respectability with their reactions to Sunday’s 29-15 loss to the Jets.

While Sunday’s game caused some people to pop the cork on their champagne bottles in celebration (see: Shula, Don; Morris, Mercury; et al.), the Colts loss was still just their first of season.

GASP!

And now it has incited riot-like, idiotic reactions felt from South Bend to Evansville. Not to mention endlessly annoying national media coverage as they continued fielding emails from angry Colt fans on ESPN radio this morning. [Read more...]

Eagles Jackson Tears ACL

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to the Philadeplhia Eagles News, Eagles C Jamaal Jackson tears ACL during Sunday's win over the Denver Broncos. He will visit Dr. James Andrews in the coming days.

Fantasy Impact: Jackson is heartbroke about the news, "I'm heartbroken that I can't help my teammates win a divisional title and possibly a Super Bowl," Jackson said in a text message, when asked whether he wanted to say anything to Eagles fans. "But I thank [the fans] for all the support that they have showed me over the years, and somehow, some way I'll be back on the field in the future!"

Fantasy Football Week 17 Start Em, Sit Em Lineup Advice

Email Post Email Post
fantasy-football-week-17

Ladies and gentleman, I am proud to inform you that I am a fantasy football champion.

I played in six leagues this year, two of which are keeper leagues I have played in for eight and three years, respectively, and the others of which are more “random” leagues that I play in with family members. In my eight-year league, with many of best college friends, I finished third.

And in my three-year league, with another group of my college friends, I took home the title with a 137.5-126 victory. Despite having turmoil at the QB position all year (Matt Ryan was the guy I drafted to be my starter), my RB trio of Chris Johnson, Maurice Jones-Drew, and Ryan Grant anchored what was a very consistent lineup. Throw in breakout seasons by DeSean Jackson, Vernon Davis, and Steve Smith (Giants), and my team was very good from week to week.

So now the question for all of our consistent readers is: how did you do? Whether your playoffs ended in Week 16 or you are here for help with your Week 17 rosters, please regale us in the comment section with your playoff war stories. We want to hear them.

Also, I want to offer a hearty congratulations to David, from the excellent sports blog Sparty & Friends, who won the first annual Midwest Sports Fans Fantasy Football Challenge.

Ryan Grant Great Game

Email Post Email Post

Update: Packers RB Ryan Grant had 16 carries for 97 yards and 2 scores.

Fantasy Impact: Ryan Grant has been very consistent this year, and at times great. He should be a good RB2 in drafts next year, much like this year.

Maurice Creek Injury Update: Fractured Left Knee, Out For Season

Email Post Email Post
maurice-creek-injury-update

Indiana crushed winless Bryant tonight exactly how they were supposed to. Unfortunately, something that was not supposed to happen ended up happening.

Maurice Creek, the most offensively prolific of this year’s freshman building blocks brought in by Tom Crean, left tonight’s game with what appeared to be a very bad knee injury.

As of yet, I have not heard or found any official word on the extent of Creek’s injury.

RB Thomas could miss Week 17

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to ESPN.com Saints running back Pierre Thomas underwent tests on his injured ribs, and the results were negative.  Thomas left Sunday's loss to the Bucs with the injury, and was unable to return to the game

Fantasy Impact: Thomas may sit out Week 17, in order for the team to rest him so he is set to go for the playoffs.  There is no point in playing him in Week 17 and risking more injury.

Niners release CB Keith Smith

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the 49ers have released cornerback Keith Smith.

Fantasy Impact: This is not a surprise move as the Niners season is all but over, and the team will be looking to see what they have on their roster by way of depth.  Smith did not make an impact this year with the team, and as such packs his bags.

Wilkerson placed on IR

Email Post Email Post

Update: Tampa Bay Bucs defensive end Jimmy Wilkerson has been placed on injured reserve, according to TSN. Wilkerson will be done for the season due to an ACL tear in his left knee.

Fantasy Impact: Wilkerson was hurt in the team's Overtime upset over the Saints.  Wilkerson had a nice year for the Bucs who looked to have shown some life the past few weeks, and have something to build on going into the off season.

Greene battling injury

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to the New York Jets official team website, rookie running back Shonn Greene is dealing with a shoulder injury. Head coach Rex Ryan said he believes Greene will be able to play through the injury.

Fantasy Impact: Greene had a productive outing in Week 16 against Indy, and as such appears to be in line to get 15-20 touches in Week 17. He does face a stingy Bengals defense though so temper your expectations.

Blackhawks Flying High After Weekend Sweep of Nashville

Email Post Email Post

Chicago Blackhawks fans couldn’t have received a better Christmas gift than a weekend sweep of division rival Nashville. Two back-to-back wins against the Predators halted Nashvilles’ attempt of claiming first place in the Central Division, and gave the Hawks a league-leading 55 points.

It was the same team, but the Hawks played two different type of games to win this past weekend.

Graham done for the year

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to the Pewter Report, Tampa Bay Bucs running back Earnest Graham will miss Week 17 after tearing a ligament in his toe.

Fantasy Impact: Graham was a major bust this season, and saw his role totally diminished.  He will need to battle for his roster spot next season.

Champs Sports Bowl: Miami-Wisconsin Spread and Pick

Champs Sports Bowl

Miami Hurricanes -3 vs. Wisconsin Badgers

This to me is one of the best games of the Bowl Season.

If these two teams were cars the Hurricanes would be a Porsche and the Badgers would be a Hummer, which makes this a classic game of speed vs. brawn.

Eagle Bank Bowl: Temple-UCLA Spread and Pick

Eagle Bank Bowl Spread and Pick

Temple Owls( +5) vs. UCLA Bruins

Folks about three years ago, I could have made a living betting against Temple. Didn’t matter who they played, whatever the spread was I would go against Temple and would win every time. At times Temple would play mediocre competition, and the line would be Temple +35, and they would lose by 40.

That’s how bad they were.
