Haynesworth fed up in Washington

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Washington Post is reporting that Redskins DT Albert Haynesworth says he could not "survive another season with the team unless something changes.

Fantasy Impact: After being sent home from practice for being late, Haynesworth exploded, trashing defensive coordinator Greg Blache.  "If they keep this system the way it is, then they would label Albert Haynesworth a bust who didn't live up to the contract," he said. "Everybody would say he just took the money and ran off. And I'm still playing as hard as I possibly can. But you can only do so much within the system that's put around you. And I'm not talking about the players. The players have been great. I couldn't ask for any better guys. I'm talking about the system."

Bulger placed on IR

Email Post Email Post

Update: The St. Louis Rams team website is reporting that quarterback Marc Bulger has been placed on the IR with a broken leg, ending his season.

Fantasy impact: Keith Null is expected to get the start on Sunday for the Rams, with Kyle Boller also being in the mix.  Bulger threw just five TDs on the season, and will certainly hear the critics calling for the end of his tenure in St. Louis.

Chris Johnson Bright Spot for Titans

Email Post Email Post

Update: Despite Tennessee’s loss to the Chargers on Christmas Day, RB Chris Johnson proved to be the bright spot in the Titans offense, as he continues his pursuit to be only the sixth running back in NFL history to rush for 2000 yards in a season.

Fantasy Impact: Johnson rushed for his 10th straight 100 yard rushing game, as he gained 142 rushing yards and a TD for the Titans. He has proven all season long to be one of the league’s most elite running backs and his success in 2009 has made him worthy of a first pick option for fantasy owners next season.

In what was arguably the most anticipated game of the season, the Cleveland Cavaliers held the reigning NBA Champion LA Lakers to under 90 points in a Christmas Day win at the Staples Center.

The nationally televised Marquee game, hyped the return of Shaquille O’Neal to a city in which he won three of his four NBA titles, and showcased the extraordinary basketball talents of Back-to-Back MVP winners Lebron James (2008-2009 winner) and Kobe Bryant (2007-2008 winner), as well as their latest Nike Puppet commercials.

Chargers Offense Red Hot

Email Post Email Post

Update: The San Diego Chargers offense proves to be one the most prolific and efficient offenses in the league as they torched the Titans on Christmas Day with a 42-17 victory. The Chargers have won 10 in a row and their offense is clicking as well as any team in the NFL. Thursday vs. the Titans, they got a balanced attack from their passing game and ground attack as they clinched the number 2 spot in the AFC and a first round bye.

Fantasy Impact: Phillip Rivers continues his successful season as he threw for 264 yards and 2 scores. The ground attack was led by LaDainian Tomlinson and Darren Sproles who each found the endzone 2 times. Mike Tolbert was also effective in the running game as accounted for 60 yards on the ground. The tandem of Antonio Gates and Vincent Jackson were too much for the Titans secondary to handle, as the Chargers hope to continue their red hot streak into the playoffs.

Meineke Car Care Bowl
Pittsburgh Panthers (-1.5) vs. North Carolina Tar Heels

This game will be played in Charlotte North Carolina so it will basically be a home game for Butch Davis and his Tar Heels. Carolina is playing in the Car Care Bowl for the second year in a row with a 8-4 record.

The strength of the Tar Heels this year was their defense, which limited offenses to less than 17 points per game. More importantly is that their rush defense who was ranked 9th nationally. This will be a game of strength vs. strength as Pittsburgh has the most explosive freshman running back in the country Dion Lewis who has rushed for 1,640 yards and 17 touchdowns.

CJ to Burn Chargers?

Email Post Email Post

Update: Titans RB Chris Johnson goes for his 10th straight 100-yard rushing performance Friday night vs. San Diego.  He is on pace to break Marshall Faulk's total-yardage record of 2,429 set in 1999.  Eric Dickerson's rushing record of 2,105 is a long-shot with 375 yards to go, but don't count CJ out.  He loves to prove the naysayers wrong.

Fantasy Impact: The Chargers allow 117 yards rushing per game — 21st in the NFL — so Chris Johnson should have a typical CJ-like performance as far as yardage goes.  However, he may have a difficult time getting in the end zone, at least as a rusher.  In their last three games, the Chargers have not allowed a rushing TD (all TDs have been through the air).  Against the Titans, they may stack the line with 8-man fronts on 1st and 2nd down to contain Johnson and force Young to beat them with his arm.

Chargers D Has Tough Test

Email Post Email Post

Update: The San Diego Chargers DST have a difficult matchup tonight against a Tennessee Titans offense that now has good balance.  During their six-game losing streak to start the season, the Titans offense was almost entirely RB Chris Johnson.  But since Vince Young has taken over the starting job from Kerry Collins, the Titans have a newfound passing attack with WRs Justin Gage and Kenny Brit becoming more and more involved.

Fantasy Impact: The Chargers allow 117 yards rushing per game — 21st in the NFL — so Chris Johnson should have a typical CJ-like performance. Tonight's game could very well be a shootout, so the Chargers DST are not highly recommended in standard formats.  But in deeper leagues, they could be considered a #2 unit.

Big Night Coming for Gates?

Email Post Email Post

Update: Chargers TE Antonio Gates is on pace for his best season yard-wise.  He needs just 31 receiving yards in his final two games to pass his career high of 1101 set in 2005 and could very easily do it Friday night at Tennessee.  His TD total of 6 is down from recent years, but that is partly because the Chargers have scored so often via the big play this season — mainly QB Philip Rivers to WR Vincent Jackson — and have not relied as much on Gates' red-zone prowess.

Fantasy Impact: Coming off two lackluster performances in terms of yardage (4 rec. for 44 yds in week 14 and 4 rec. for 33 yds in week 15), Gates should have a big night. The Titans have two very good cover corners in Cortland Finnegan and Nick Harper that will likely force Rivers to look more for his big tight end down the middle of the field matched up against safeties and linebackers.  And with starting LB Kieth Bulluck out (torn ACL), the Titans could have serious trouble containing Gates.

Rackers Out, Nugent In Again

Email Post Email Post

Update: The Arizona Cardinals team website reports that K Neil Rackers (groin) will be out Sunday vs. the Rams.  K Mike Nugent will start in his place for the 2nd straight week.  He tallied 4 PATs and a 48-yard FG last week vs. the Lions.

Fantasy Impact: Nugent is a good start against a terrible Rams defense that should give up a lot of points.

Fitzpatrick Now a Game-Time Decision

Email Post Email Post

Update: CBSSports.com reports that Buffalo Bills QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (ankle) was limited in practice Friday and is now considered a game-time decision for Sunday's game in Atlanta. He participated in individual workouts on Friday, but not in regular practice.  QB Brian Brohm would get his first NFL start if Fitzpatrick can't go.

Fantasy Impact: Unless you took a time machine and went back to 1992, don't even consider starting a Bills QB right now.  Jim Kelly in 2009 would probably be a better fantasy option than Fitzpatrick, Brohm, or QB Trent Edwards.  If you own the Falcons DST, you are probably licking your chops for Sunday as whoever takes the snaps for Buffalo is bound to turn the ball over and provide plenty of defensive scoring opportunities.

DeAngelo Williams Doubtful for Sunday

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to CBSSports.com, Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams is doubtful for Sunday's game against the NY Giants after missing his 3rd straight practice Friday with a sprained left ankle. Panthers backup RB Jonathan Stewart is questionable with a sore left achilles tendon, but practiced Thursday and Friday in full.  Stewart has been listed on the injury report with his achilles injury for several weeks now.  He will likely start in Williams' place as those who don't practice on Friday normally don't play on Sunday.

Fantasy Impact: It is advisable to bench Williams Sunday vs. the Giants until there is more promising news that indicates he will play.  If you own Stewart, you are in good shape as he has gone over 100 yards both games Williams was out or left due to injury (weeks 13 and 15).  In deeper leagues, Stewart can be considered a low-end #1 back this Sunday.

Royal Out Sunday

Email Post Email Post

Update: According to the team website, Broncos WR Eddie Royal (neck, head) is out for Sunday's game at Philadelphia, coach Josh McDaniels said Friday.

Fantasy Impact: Royal has been a pain in the royal you-know-what this season for fantasy owners.  Bronocs QB Kyle Orton has practically forgotten about him in the passing game.  Keep him reserved in all formats.  Dropping him for a more serviceable backup is probably not a bad idea.

Fitzpatrick, Edwards Doubtful

Email Post Email Post

Update: BuffaloBills.com reports that both current starter QB Ryan Fitzpatrick and season starter Trent Edwards both missed practice again today with QB Brian Brohm taking the snaps.

Fantasy Impact: Both Bills QB's have had sub par years, and this week it looks like Brohm might get the start.
