Fantasy Football Week 17 Start Em, Sit Em Lineup Advice

Ladies and gentleman, I am proud to inform you that I am a fantasy football champion.

I played in six leagues this year, two of which are keeper leagues I have played in for eight and three years, respectively, and the others of which are more “random” leagues that I play in with family members. In my eight-year league, with many of best college friends, I finished third.

And in my three-year league, with another group of my college friends, I took home the title with a 137.5-126 victory. Despite having turmoil at the QB position all year (Matt Ryan was the guy I drafted to be my starter), my RB trio of Chris Johnson, Maurice Jones-Drew, and Ryan Grant anchored what was a very consistent lineup. Throw in breakout seasons by DeSean Jackson, Vernon Davis, and Steve Smith (Giants), and my team was very good from week to week.

So now the question for all of our consistent readers is: how did you do? Whether your playoffs ended in Week 16 or you are here for help with your Week 17 rosters, please regale us in the comment section with your playoff war stories. We want to hear them.

Also, I want to offer a hearty congratulations to David, from the excellent sports blog Sparty & Friends, who won the first annual Midwest Sports Fans Fantasy Football Challenge.

My team, The Ridiculous Rosenthals, finished the regular season with the #1 seed at 10-3. I crapped the bed in the playoffs, however, scoring a measly 74.5 points to lose to MSF’s own Ryan Russell.

Russell then proceeded to crap the bed even worse in the championship game, scoring only 64 points and not even giving Sparty a challenge.

So congratulations David. A nice fat check will be on its way to you, as well as bragging rights until next season. (Also, you should visit his blog when you’re done here by following this link: Sparty and Friends.)

With all of that now out of the way, let’s take a quick look back at how my Week 16 start em and sit em picks fared.

  • Start em hits: D/ST Green Bay Packers
  • Start em misses: QB Alex Smith, SF (solid, but only 1 TD!); RB Cedric Benson, CIN (solid day, but no TDs!); WR Josh Morgan, SF; TE Jermichael Finley, GB (80 receiving yards, but no TD!);
  • Sit em hits: RB Matt Forte, CHI;
  • Sit em misses: QB Donovan McNabb, PHI; WR Roddy White, ATL (this was a huge miss); TE Visanthe Shiancoe, MIN; D/ST Pittsburgh Steelers

As you can see, Week 16 was not a banner week for me. I also thought that the Colts would play their starters longer if the game was competitive, and that the only way they’d come out is if Indy jumped out big early (thus racking up some solid fantasy stats). Clearly I missed that as well.

But those of you who are consistent readers know that Week 16 was not indicative of my typical success rate, and – as usual – my best and most accurate work was done in the comment section making specific recommendations on lineup questions. (Take out the questions involving Colts and Roddy White and I think I led everyone in a solid direction…but please take me to task if that’s not the case.)

As we look ahead to Fantasy Football Week 17 – a week that I hope most people are not still playing because I don’t believe in Week 17 playoffs – I will switch up the format just a bit. Instead of going into a lot of depth about one player at each position, as I usually do, this week’s post will be more of a quick-hit post highlighting the guys I like and don’t like. Additionally, I will list the guys at each position whose teams have nothing to play for in Week 17, because you’ll want to know who they are.

Fantasy Football Week 17

Start Em, Sit Em Lineup Advice and Projections

First off, let’s get this out of the way. Here are the teams with essentially nothing to play for in Week 17:

  • Indianapolis, obviously.
  • San Diego
  • Cincinnati
  • New England
  • New Orleans
  • Green Bay

And here a few quick notes you need to know about these teams:

  • Cincinnati and New England could flip-flop the #3 and #4 seeds, but neither can get a first round bye.
  • New England has a history of playing guys through the end of the regular season even without much to play for – remember Week 17 in 2007? With their offense finally clicking and a potential playoff foe (Houston) on the Week 17 schedule, I’d still play Brady and Moss.
  • New Orleans has home field advantage locked up already, but coming off of two straight losses head coach Sean Payton has already said that they will treat Week 17 like it is a “must win” game.
  • Green Bay is locked into the wild card round because Minnesota won the NFC North. All of the other NFC playoff teams (Minnesota, Philly, Dallas, and Arizona) could get a first round bye depending on how Week 17 unfolds.

Week 17 Start Em, Sit Em Quarterbacks

Start em:

  • Among the typical “top-tier” guys that I like this week: Matt Schaub (vs NE), Brett Favre (vs NYG), Kurt Warner (vs GB)
  • Vince Young is a terrific start candidate with the mailing-it-in Seahawks on the schedule.
  • You have to like Ben Roethlisberger against Miami’s suspect pass D.
  • Jay Cutler looked strong last night and faces Detroit’s porous D in Week 17. It is a good opportunity for him to end the season on a high note and he probably will.
  • Matt Moore has thrown six TD passes against Minnesota and the Giants the last two weeks. Steve Smith is out with a broken arm, which hurts Moore, but New Orleans’ defense has not been as strong as of late.

Sit em:

  • I would not want any part of Philip Rivers, Carson Palmer, Peyton Manning, or Aaron Rodgers in Week 17. I have not heard anything definitive on Rodgers yet, but I cannot image him playing a full game against Arizona. That is one to track throughout the week to see what Mike McCarthy is saying.
  • I told you to sit Donovan McNabb last week so you may want to tell me to shove it when I say what I’m about to say: McNabb and Romo scare me this week. They are playing eachother and neither had a particularly explosive fantasy game when the two teams met up earlier this season (1 TD for each). Division games tend to be knock-down, drag-out battles. I see the potential for that here.
  • David Garrard is not that enticing to me even with Cleveland on the schedule. Yes, Jacksonville is still playing for an outside shot at the playoffs, but Garrard has been good on the road this year.

Week 17 Start Em, Sit Em Running Backs

fantasy football week 17 start em, sit em lineup advice - jerome harrison, devin aromashoduStart em:

  • I love Thomas Jones this week. With Cincy essentially having nothing to play for and the Jets desperate for a win, Jones should have a big day.
  • Fred Jackson gets to face what we can only assume will be a halfhearted effort from Indy. I like him a lot this week.
  • Knowshon Moreno faces a KC run defense that is giving up big yards to everyone.
  • With DeAngelo Williams possibly out again, Jonathan Stewart has to be in your lineup. He is a dominant back who should run roughshod over New Orleans’ struggling D. Even if DAW plays, he won’t be 100%. Keep Stewart in there.
  • Yes, you keep playing Jerome Harrison. Don’t be an idiot like so many Cleveland coaches have been and sit him down. He’s dominated for two straight weeks. This is for real. He’s a good back. We’ve all known it…expect his coaches.

Sit em:

  • Joseph Addai, LaDainian Tomlinson, Ryan Grant, and Cedric Benson are all guys that I would like to sit if I could. I can’t imagine their teams will leave them out there long Sunday.
  • Laurence Maroney fumbled again around the goalline. He’s been such a productive TD scorer this year, but the Pats are back to scoring through the air and Belichick won’t waste time with Maroney as the playoffs loom.
  • Brian Westbrook is not a guy I’d want starting. He struggled in his first week back and only got 11 touches, plus he faces one of the hottest defenses in the NFL right now in the Cowboys.
  • Brandon Jacobs has likely wrecked a lot of fantasy teams this season. He is now injured and should not sniff your lineup.

Week 17 Start Em, Sit Em Wide Receivers

fantasy football week 17 start em, sit em lineup advice - jerome harrison, devin aromashoduStart em:

  • I am going to make amends right here, right now for telling you to sit Roddy White last week. Start him this week. Atlanta plays a Tampa Bay defense that is improving but that can still be had. With Matt Ryan back, White again becomes a weekly must start.
  • I continue to like Santonio Holmes – a lot – and especially with Miami on the schedule this week.
  • Yes, Derrick Mason dropped a wide open touchdown in Week 16. He also has 72 catches on the season, another 1,000 yard year, and has 7 TDs. In a must win game, even with Nnamdi Asoumuga on the other side, I like the consistent Mason this week.
  • Who the hell is Devin Aromashodu? (Ironically, he was a 2006t draft pick of the WR-starved Miami Dolphins.) No one really knew before last night but he emerged in a big with 7 catches and 2 TDs. Chicago plays Detroit this week. I see another strong week for Aromashodu coming.
  • Yes, I would still start Randy Moss and Wes Welker, unless you hear that the Patriots are planning to sit them. Even one half from these two guys is worth it with how NE’s offense is clicking again.

Sit em:

  • I am not a fan of Vincent Jackson, Reggie Wayne, Chad Ochocino, Donald Driver, and Greg Jennings this weekend. Perhaps take a wait-and-see approach with Driver and Jennings, but I just think Green Bay will play it close to the vest even if they do play the starters.
  • Once again, Mike Sims-Walker proves that you cannot trust him, especially on the road. He may well have a big game against the Browns on Sunday, but I’d rather go in a different direction.
  • Nate Burleson is out for the season with an injury, and he’s a Seahawk, so he’s obviously a sit.
  • Braylon Edwards and Roy Williams both have first round pedigrees and have shown flashes of fantasy relevance this season. I will just ask you one question: do you trust either of these guys with your title on the line? Neither do I. Sit them.

Week 17 Start Em, Sit Em Tight Ends

Start em:

  • Kellen Winslow is not catching TDs, be he’s consistently catching 4-6 passes for 60-80 yards. If you’re in a PPR league, Winslow is a solid option this week.
  • Zach Miller seemed to have a nice rapport with Charlie Frye last week for Oakland. I like him as a solid play this weekend as well.
  • I like both Jason Witten and Brent Celek this week. I don’t think this will be an explosive game between Philly and Dallas, but I do think the tight ends can have good days.
  • Where in the hell did two TDs come from for Todd Heap last week? That makes six on the season. With Baltimore in desperate need of a W, I can see Flacco continuing to trust his veteran tight end in the red zone.

Sit em:

  • Once again, the obvious sits: Dallas Clark and Antonio Gates. Jermichael Finley I actually might not be so quick to sit. He’s still a young player who missed some time earlier this season. And all he needs is one TD to be productive. Go in another direction if you have a solid option. Otherwise, it’s probably okay to play Finley.
  • You may be excited about Greg Olsen’s Week 16 TD and the Detroit matchup. I’m not. Olsen had one catch against Detroit earlier this year (granted, it went for a one-yard TD) and has caught a whopping four passes in the last eight games, Monday night included. I don’t trust him.

Week 17 Start Em, Sit Em Defense / Special Teams

Start em:

  • Baltimore is a terrific start this week. Charlie Frye spend last Sunday trying to throw as many INTs as he could. With the Ravens playing for everything, they probably won’t make it a very pleasant day for Frye and the Raiders.
  • The Bills have to be a start this week. With Curtis Painter likely to play the majority of the game against Buffalo’s play-making secondary, there are some fantasy points to be had.
  • I love the Jets D this week. Cincinnati has struggled offensively all year, and I doubt the starters play the whole way.
  • Tennessee plays Seattle. If you watched any of last week’s Seattle-Green Bay game, then you know why I’m recommending Tennessee here.

Sit em:

  • You cannot justify playing the Colts, Chargers, Bengals, Packers, or even the Patriots D. The first three are sits because I can see starters not playing. The last two are sits because of matchup, regardless of if the starters play.
  • I would not want to start Carolina’s D against New Orleans. I think the Saints will put up some points.
  • You may see Cleveland on the schedule and think the Jags’ D is a good start. I say no. The Browns are actually scoring points now and the Jags are not a good defense any longer.

So there we go, your Week 17 start em, sit em. Hopefully the new format didn’t throw you off too much, but I think we were able to cover a lot more pertinent information in a shorter time period doing it this way.

Plus, it gets us to the most important place more quickly: the comment section. Ask your questions and I’ll be answering all week.

And for those of you who’ve been with us all year, remember to let us know how your championships went. I’m hoping to hear about a lot of titles won in Week 16 (as opposed to, you now, “F— you Jerod for telling me to sit Donovan McNabb!”)

For those still playing, best of luck in Week 17!

    Jerod,

Congrats on your title and thanks for the awesome insight you've been providing to us especially a newbie like me! I'm 6 pt's ahead of my opponent going into my championship match week 17! Despite operation shutdown by the COLTS JSTEW came up big for me. I remember you talking about him weeks ago and how he could be helpful for owners so true..especially people who had FORTE..ha! Speaking of which how ironic would it be if he helps me win the championship this week? Ok here's my chioces for the second part of my title game:

    QB Peyton/Jay Cutler
    RB JSTEW/MATT "don't call it a comeback" Forte/Maroney/M Bush/Addai
WR Mr. 85/Miles MVP Austin/Driver/Austin Collie
    TE Celek/Fred Davis/J Finley
    DEF Cards/Buf
    K Akers
MY CHOICES: QB Cutler RB JSTEW & Forte *maybe pick up Arian Foster for my flex?
WR Miles Austin…not sure about Austin Collie,Driver or if I should pick up DA or Earl Bennet from Bears or J Maclin
TE Celek K Akers Def Buffalo

    THANKS!

  • Jason

    Hey Jerod,

First off, congratulations on your championship! I hope in a week I can say the same thing. It's going to be tough as I only have a 5 point lead going into Round 2 thanks in part to Aaron Rodgers' subpar performance for fantasy standards and Jonathan Stewart being 1 yard shy of another td and a holding call away from another 50+ yards as well. My opponent has extremely favorable matchups this week with his RBs (MJD, Ray Rice, and Jerome Harrison) so I'm going to probably need a miracle.

At QB, if Rodgers appears likely to sit, would you suggest Alex Smith or Vince Young?

At RB, I have Chris Johnson, Jamaal Charles, and Stewart. Benson is on my bench along with Turner.

At WR, should I go with Sidney Rice and Miles Austin over Colston, Wayne, and MSW?

Thanks again for the advice throughout the season! Win or lose, I never would have made it this far without your advice. I'll definitely be back next season!

  • Mike

    Hey jerod,

Congratulations on your championship! I have said it before and I am gonna say it again, your insight has been just awesome. And that you make the effort to answer each and every query is truly remarkable. Take a bow man! I will continue to read your column rest of the season and am definitely back next season!

So, well, it was a close game and I finished in the second place thanks largely to Saints, who just do not look the same team that played first half of the season. What I find more baffling is that they don't even have that many injuries to blame the performance on. Anyhow, here were the line-ups, and who would have thought Shiancoe would win it for him:
Brees / Welker, Colston / MJD, Harrison / Finley / Hartley / Colts DEF
    Opposition:
Rodgers / B.Marshall, Jennings / CJ, Beanie Wells / Shiancoe / Kaeding / Bengals DEF

So, I finish second. Not too bad for a first time fantasy team manager.

Thanks again for the good work!

  • George

btw, 2 weeks ago I asked ypu about Foster and u said you would not start him over Addai or Driver. I did anyway and it alsmost costs me losing in the playoffs….last week i started Bush over Addai when u advised against it it cost me 5 pts….

Brandon Jackson(Green Bay) is also available and he scored 3 td's last week…Is he a sneaky play??

  • John

    Hi Jerod:
Made it through my Final round week 1 with a 20 point lead going into week 2. If only I played Harrison20, White25, Celek18 instead of Wells, MSW & F. Davis OK Wells (14) was good. I am playing the Brees/or/Favre,R. Rice, R. williams, MJD, Welker G. Jennings Ocho, winslow,NO Longwell Team. STD Format.
    My team:
QB: Rodjers (wire Smith, Young, Ryan)
RBs: C. Johnson, Steward, Harrision Charles, Wells, LT (wire F. Jackson, Taylor,D. Brown, Morris, Foster, Hillard)
WRs: White, Mason, Smith NY, Msw, Crabtree (wire: Aromashodu, Bowe, Collie, Cotchery, Bryant, J. Morgan)
    TE: Celek & F, Davis
    DEF: SFran
    K: Hartley or Bironas
I need a QB that will play but I also should drop (Wayne, Msw + ???) and pick up a WR or at least players to block) Regards jm

  • coachmo

    Jerod,
Congrats on your championships, but you failed to mention that in the Tommy Bahama league, you finished 4th in the playoffs, losing to your little brother last week and losing to your father in the 3rd place game. It is true, that both of our week 16 totals would have blown the fantasy jock strap off of your little brother, who won the league title, but in the end my team the Leatherheads came out on top.
    Line-up:
    QB: E. Manning abd Warner
WR: BIg time trio of Driver, Boldin and Moss
RB Grant and Jamall Charles(good late season pic-up)
TE/WR FLex: Secret weapon Amendola for return yards
Flex W/R: Carnell Williams(glad to see him bounce back)
    K: Prater
DEF: Stunk it up in week 15, but came through in week 16, Pittsburgh and Carolina
    Bewtter luck next year:
    Dad, opps I mean coachmo

  • http://www.vicariously.tv Nick

    We did it!

Thanks in no small part to your always sound advice, my team (arbitrarily named The Chinese Fire Garden) took home the gold in a nail biter on Monday night. After checking in with your site at, oh, say 4pm ET to see the Steven Jackson inactive update, I threw in Chester Taylor at the last second. Going into Monday night my opponent had Minnesota's D, and as soon as they took the field the score in our bout jumped to 100.43 (me) to 99.75 (him). Needless to say, I was nervous. But after Jay Cutler miraculously picked apart the Vikings D (a special delight to me as a Packer Fan), they were down to 0 at halftime, and CT had put up a few for us. In the end, we walked off with a 106 to 89 victory in a match that could have easily gone the other way.

Thanks for everything, congratulations on your success. Go Packers!

    -Nick-

  • Nick

Incidentally, there wasn't a single other matchup we could have been involved in that would have given us a victory in the finals. Every other fantasy team in my league showed up to the tune of 130s and140s except for the two in the finals. Sometimes it just works out, I guess. Cheers.

  • George

    Hey Jerod,

I'm wondering if these possible waiver wire picks could be better than taking a chance w/ Driver and Austin Collie this weekend as my 2nd rb and flex: Lex Hilliard,Arian Foster,Kenny Britt ,J Maclin or Mike Tolbert are all available in my league.

This is a real tricky week and would hate to lose the championship because my player was benched soon like Collie or Driver when I could've picked up someone like Maclin who was playing a full meaningful game against Dallas. On the flip side Collie and Driver have been fairly steady so it would stink to lose because I took a chance on a Foster and Kubiak benches him again.

    What do u think?

  • maxdo

    Hi Jerod,

I made a terrible blunder this week by benching S. Smith (NYG) for Snelling ( split carries). Needless to say…I lost. For the sake of pride, however, I will play for the 3rd place matchup, and treat as though it is the championship…it's as close as I'm going to get. At can at least finish in 3rd place than. I should also mention that, I did finish with the most points and largest victory margins per game (kicked major ass!), thanks to your insights.

So, here's my question. Should I start Finley or Bo Scaife for the TE position? I really like Finley, but I'm not sure that he will play the entire game.

Thanks again for all of your help throughout the season!

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/JerodMSF JerodMSF

    QB: Cutler, no doubt anymore
RB: J Stew, Forte (Bush would be third)
WR: M Austin, Austin Collie, Donald Driver (don't like Ocho because Cincy has essentially nothing to play for and he'll be matched up against Revis)
    TE: Celek (Davis second)
DEF: Buffalo (Curtis Painter = solid day for Bills)

Yes, I like Foster over any of your other choices after Stew and Forte. I like Collie over Bennett, but Driver is a crapshoot. Who knows how long GB plays starters. I think I'd play Maclin over Driver though; just track GB throughout the week to find out any clues as to how they'll approach game.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/JerodMSF JerodMSF

Glad to help out George. Best of luck this weekend! Bring home the title!

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/JerodMSF JerodMSF

At QB, I like Vince Young against Seattle. Did you see how bad the Seahawks were in Week 16? VY still has something to play for this year: momentum for next year and the rest of his career.

I like the RBs you have starting. I would not start Benson over them.

Yes, I like Rice and Austin. Best combo of consistent production, hot recent play, and teams with something to play for.

Best of luck Jason! Let me know how you do.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/JerodMSF JerodMSF

Mike, thanks for the kind words. Glad I can help out. Doing the research to answer questions has helped me out with my own teams too, so I've gotten as much out as I've put in. You all have been great.

No telling what's wrong the Saints. They simply are not that great putting together 8, 9, 10 play drives. They need big plays to be effective and they have not been getting them.

As for this upcoming week, for anyone still playing, I'd start Brees with confidence because I think the Saints are playing this week like it's a playoff game. That's what Sean Payton said, and that's what they should do. They need to get on track or they won't go anywhere in the playoffs.

From the looks of the rosters, I would have expected you to win, but I thought Finley would be better than Shiancoe. Still, second place is not bad. Congrats! Now you can build on it for a title next year.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/JerodMSF JerodMSF

I like Arian Foster and Jeremy Maclin, both of whom have a lot to play for. I still like Collie because he'll essentially be the #1 option with Wayne and Clark out, so I'd rank them Foster, Collie, Maclin (gotta go RB #1!). Foster was very good last week, so I don't think he's in danger of being benched. Plus, I could see the Patriots resting defensive guys in the second half if the games gets out of hand either way. If so, Foster should produce because he won't be resting. I like him.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/JerodMSF JerodMSF

Brandon Jackson is a crapshoot. He'll probably get carries, but we don't know how GB will play it this week. And Arizona certainly isn't rolling over with a #2 seed still a mathematical possibility. I'd trust Foster a lot more than I'd trust Jackson.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/JerodMSF JerodMSF

You really can't trust performances against Seattle like Jackson had. It's Seattle. They closed up shop once December started.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/JerodMSF JerodMSF

Damn…well I would have told you to sit White probably, so that wouldn't have helped! Harrison and Celek certainly have been good, but playing Wells and Davis over them was not a bad choice at all.

QB: I like Ryan. He came back to life last week and I think wants to finish strong. Tampa Bay is just decent on D and Ryan should have a solid day. He's the safest of the four in my mind.
RBs: Damn you have a lot of good ones! I'd rank them: CJ, Stewart (if DAW does not play, otherwise I move him behind Wells), Harrison, Wells, Charles, LT…I wouldn't start any of those guys over Charles, so not sure it's worth ranking them.
WRs: White, Mason, Smith, MSW, Crabtree…I'd rank them exactly as you've listed them. None of the waiver guys inspire me over the guys you have.
TE: Celek because there's no telling if Washington will even show up
K: Bironas (playing Seattle, should be a good day for Titans)

It's Week 17, so drop anyone who won't be starting.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/JerodMSF JerodMSF

Who are you? I don't believe anyone asked for tales of my 4th place finishes. ;-) We keep things positive here!

Congrats on your victory. It was a great battle. Any time you get three TDs from one player who had only four receptions, you know that fate is smiling down upon you.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/JerodMSF JerodMSF

That is a great team name. I don't know what it means, but I like it.

Congrats on the victory! I'm glad we've had so many success stories!

And as for the Packers, they are playing great right now. How wide open are the NFC playoffs? I could see any of the six teams making it to Miami.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/JerodMSF JerodMSF

Haha, yes, it's fantasy football. Sometimes luck and matchups are far more important than skill.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/JerodMSF JerodMSF

Scaife is definitely more valuable with VY out there. I'd play him just because Finley is so unpredictable this week and Scaife has been very productive recently.

Sorry about the loss. Snelling was a solid play last week, especially considering the matchup, so I wouldn't beat yourself up too badly. Sometimes it's just too hard to tell. But third place is nothing to sneeze at, and regular season domination is far more indicative of your fantasy aptitude. So congrats on your fine record and best of luck getting the title next year.

  • George

    Jerod,

It looks like Kubiak will give a good amount of touches to Foster BUT I'm wondering if Bellichek plays his starters throughout and they dominate Houston will be forced to throw more so Fostewr may not get that many chances. What do you think?

Also, my opponent has Aaron Rodgers. I'm not 100% sure if he will start him again this week BUT do you think I should start Driver and Finley in that situation so I can block his points. I know you said you don't put much effort into siphoning points but Driver and Finley get a decent amount of targets form Rodgers.

  • George

    Jerod,

Which defense do you think is the best play this week?

    Bills,Titans or denver

Also how would you rank the following as possible WR2 plays? Miles Austin will be my wr1 and I'm sending Mr. 85 to the bench this week.

Austin Collie…..not sure how much he plays and has unproven QB
Driver….Packers may bench starters soon and they have other wpns now
    D. Aromashodu…….yes read yr column….Cutler really likes this guy alot and Knox is out…and they play Det.
    J. Maclin….playing big game against Dallas BUT he may not be at 100% and they have many wpns on Eagles
    K. Britt…a bit of a crap shoot w/ him but he's had a fairly productive 2nd half

    Thanks!!!!

  • Josh Morris

I like this article. However…Completely disagree with sitting the McNabb/Romo duo plus Garrard. Playing for too much. Expect at least 4-5 passing TDs combined from Romo and McNabb.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/JerodMSF JerodMSF

Right now I'm not sure what Green Bay is going to do either. I would be very wary of starting Rodgers, Driver, or Finley if I had decent secondary options. Green Bay can't really improve its position to there will be no incentive for those to play 60 minutes.

As for New England, I do think that they will play their starters for a decent amount of the game, but moreso on offense than defense. That is more of a gut feeling than anything specific I've read, expect that it sounds like Tom Brady really wants to use this game to continue to rhythm they've developed offensively, and Belichick has played his starters in this situation in the past. That said, I would feel safe using Arian Foster. Even if New England jumps out early, Foster should get 10-15 carries at a minimum and he he's shown in the past that he can be effective as a receiver out of the backfield. I think you'd start Steve Slaton in this spot if he were healthy, and I'd apply the same thinking to Foster. He's not a game-breaking, dynamic type of back, but he is productive. It's Week 17…you need production.

    Jerod,

I just heard the Jets are looking to get Shonn Greene alot of work in the sun night game. Do you think he could be a real good flex play this week against the Bengals?

  • Josh Morris

I suppose it doesn't hurt to add that I went 3/3 in my championship games last week in my 3 leagues. Congrats on your other league being 4th, which was my league, bro. :)

  • Chris

Hey I really like your article and need help with my championship starting line up. Here are my starters:

Drew and Kurt … Harvin, Hines Ward, Driver, and Boldin … Dallas Clark … Gore, Grant, Jerome Harrison

My Bench: Vince Young and Cassel … Crabtree … Fred Davis … Beanie

I know I'm swapping Clark for Davis of course, but I don't know what to do about either of my QB's (don't know if they'll sit early), Hines Ward (both legs hurt), Driver and Grant (with nothing to play for). Would you (or any of you) make any other swaps from my bench? Also here are a few Free Agents I've been considering: Volek – SD, Hoyer – NE, Sanchez – NYJ … Morris – Det, Foster – Houst, Norwood – ATL … Bennett – Chi, Britt – Tenn, Thomas – Jac

    Thanks for your help!

Hey! Nice to have a true expert chime in here.

We shall see…McNabb and Romo tend not to set off fireworks when the Cowboys and Eagles play eachother. Will be interesting to see how Sunday unfolds.

Hey Jerod, first off I want to say thank you for all your help. I was able to beat my opponent by 32 points last week and all I need to do this week is to have a strong finish for a championship.
Now to business, due to injuries and playoffs, I've had to make a lot of changes in my lineup and bench.
*If you have any suggestions on who to play, even if their not listed, please feel free to tell me.
    1. If Aaron Rodgers is likely to sit then who is a good second option? (Tony Romo, Alex Smith, or Vince Young?)
    2. For my runningbacks I have Ray Rice and Jerome Harrison starting and I am looking for a good third back? (Maurice Morris, Sammy Morris, or Donald Brown?)
    3. My receivers are the biggest problem, Steve Smith's arm is broken and Vincent Jackson is not going to play a full game. I was able to pick up Devin Aromashodu but I'm still a receiver short. Mushin Muhammad maybe? Could you help me find a good receiver?
    4. For my tight ends it's Jermichael Finely or Todd Heap?
    5. D/ST, 49ers. (They destroyed the Rams back in week 4, and I'm thinking they will destroy them again)
Thanks for all you help this season

    Jerod,

Thanks so much for taking ur time to answer my posts especially this week when I've been bombarding you with a lot questions. I just want to make sure I'm making solid, good decsions this week for my championship.

I have an interesting dilemma brewing for my 3rd RB start; I picked up Arian Foster and Shonne Greene as possibilities. Someone in my league just dropped Donald Brown so he is available as well. Do you think Donald Brown will get a lot of playing time against the Bills? The Bills are bad against the run and I've heard the COLTS want to get him good playing time. I don't know if the COLTS coaches can be trusted though in wk 17.

Who would you start as flex out of Foster, Greene or Donald Brown. From a personal standpoint it would be great to win with a Colt since Manning and Addai did great form me this year or even Greene since I'm a big JET fan.

I've gotta say Buffalo's, especially since we have to assume Indy will be playing their second team for most of the game. If you're worried, I'd go with Tennessee, but Seattle has had a few good performances at home this year. I'm sure they want to avoid being embarrassed again.

I'd go with Aromashodu. I love Collie, but have no faith in Painter. Considering the matchup for CHI (Detroit), I think Cutler should have a good game and clearly he has a new deep threat toy in Aromashodu.

Thanks for stopping by Chris. Here is what I would do:

QB: Brees and Young (I think Brees plays a good portion of the game; New Orleans needs to get some rhythm before the playoffs. If Minnesota loses in the early games, Warner could play a lot. Monitor this.)
RB: Gore, Harrison, Foster (pick him up and drop anyone not starting…I think he'll get more carries than Grant or Wells)
WR: Harvin, Crabtree, Boldin (if Minnesota loses in early games), Britt (pick him up for someone not starting)
    TE: Fred Davis

Hope that helps! Let me know if you've got any other questions before game time.

Congrats on a strong Week 16!

Out of those three I would go with Romo. He is the safest choice and has been playing really well. I don't think he'll be as good as he's been, but it's a huge game for both Dallas and Philly and he'll certainly play the whole thing and should be exactly what you need: solid production.

Brown has been sick and is a risky play. Sammy Morris is earning Bill Belichick's trust, but they have a lot of backs plus we don't know if/when they will rest guys. I think Maurice Morris is your safest bet for touches, and Chicago's defense is not that good.

Hmm…tough to know without knowing who is on your waiver wire. I love Aromashodu and Muhammad had a TD last week. Playing against a struggling NO secondary, why not? He'll get 2-4 catches and 40-50 yards guaranteed.

Go with Heap. He's catching TDs and Finley might rest most of the day.

49ers D sounds like a good choice to me.

    Best of luck!

My pleasure George. Happy to do it.

Don't like Donald Brown. He's been sick and I'm reading a lot that Mike Hart will get the carries. Track this leading to kickoff, because you're right, the Bills are not good against the run. But they might not be that bad against a second team offense.

I really like Foster. He's produced decently well and Houston will certainly play to win. As for Greene, he got more carries last week that he has in the past, but also Thomas Jones as the clear #1 guy. Because of this, I like Foster. All three Houston backs will play, but Foster is the guy who will (most likely) be featured. It's a close call, but I go Foster.

  • George

Thanks, I feel like Aromashodu could be Cutler's version of Miles Austin and Cutler has faith in him.

  • George

    Jerod,

Thanks for the Donald Brown insight. Many sites are touting Donald Brown right now thinking he will get alot of carries against the Bills and be successful BUT you're right he will have 2nd teamers blocking for him and when Painter can't throw against the D they will load the box against him. Also, there is no guarantee what the COLTS coaches will do to Brown especially since he's the backup to Addai andc was hurt most of the year. And now he's sick? I don't feel good about it right now.

The Texans will be playing hard to get a win for a possible playoff berth and we know Foster is the starting back so that makes more sense to start him.

Good morning Jerod and Happy New Year, Its been a fun year thanks for all of the good coaching!__I never played FF before and it really makes all of the games fun to watch. __As I wait for the final injury status, I am trying to finalize my replacements if needed. __QB: I have Ryan-Q replacing Rodjers. RBs C. Johnson (Harrison-P & Steward-Q"-Will.) with Charles first backup. If I have to go deeper I picked up F. Jackson. WRs White,Smith NY, Mason-Q with Crabtree & MSW as backup. Just in case Mason is a late afternoon scratch and my back ups play in the 1 PM games so I picked up a 4PM replacement (Bowe). Not much out there. TE Celek K Bironas Def SF. My championship game will depend on the performance of Ryan. Can he keep close to Brees or Favre. I do have a small 20 point lead from last week that will keep it close. **** Note other team is loaded and will need good performaces. (Drees or Favre/MJD/Rice/R. WILLIAMS./G.JEN./Wes W./Ocho/Shiancoe/Longwell/New O.). **** Regards JM

Hey John! Glad to be of service.

I can't argue with any of your choices. I think you're ready to bring home a title. Let me now how it goes.

  • George

Jerod, I'm happy to say I won my 12 team ESPN league Championship by 5 pts yesterday! Cutler and JStew were huge for me and even my 1st round bust FORTE came through yesterday. I have to say your analysis and articles are first class. I had such a mediocre lineup when I started then I learned about JSTEW and guys like Maronney who were really helpful during the year to make up for guys that I drafted like Forte and Derrick Ward in the 4th round..yecch!

I had to laugh yesterday because you mentioned to play Foster over Donald Brown…I got suckered by Yahoo and ESPN into playing him last minute even though I liked the logic of playing Foster and agreed. Everyone was saying he would get alot of carries…what a disaster especially when Foster was dominating and even Shonne Greene was ok. I still won but the 3 times I went against your advice in favor of the ESPN or Yahoo guys I got burtn!!!Oh….. it was a money league so if you find yourself in the NYC area the beers are on me!

    Thanks again!!!!!!!!

  • George

ohh btw, I definitely learned alot in my first season like playing a ANY Colt once they've locked up their season positioniong is like looking for FOOLS GOLD….beware!

  • George

Shit….turns out I lost by 3 points. Can you believe that? My mobile phone wasn't totally accurate last night with the final point total. Anyway, I still had a blast despite missing out on the victory and the cash. I'll get em' next year.

    beers still on me!

  • George

breaking update!!!! I was reading an old browser window this morning on my cell when I thought I lost…..I actually WON by 3 points…Sweeet!!

Sorry for the false alarm. Thanks again for helping me bring the title home!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/JerodMSF JerodMSF

Haha…congrats George! So glad to hear. I'm happy to have provided any help, but you were the one pulling the trigger on your final roster. Pay yourself on the back and we'll see you next year!
