Thanksgiving Night Football Preview

New York Giants (6-4) at Denver Broncos (6-4)

New York Giants at Denver Broncos

  • Giants-Broncos Date: Thanksgiving Night, Thursday, November 26th
  • Giants-Broncos Kickoff Time: 8:20
  • Giants-Broncos TV Network: NFLN
  • Giants-Broncos Announcers: Bob Papa and Matt Millen
  • Giants-Broncos Point Spread: Giants -6.5
  • Giants-Broncos Over-Under: 42
  • Giants-Broncos Spread Pick by Jerod: Denver is really playing poorly right now. The Giants haven’t been all that great themselves, but they are scoring points. I don’t think Denver will be able to contain Eli Manning and the Giants, and I don’t think the Broncos have any kind of rhythm on offense right now. Even though this game is at home for Denver, I think their precipitous slide continues. Giants-Broncos free pick: Giants -6.5

Giants-Broncos Analysis

I was in Denver to watch the debacle against a suddenly-cocky San Diego team, and Bronco fans are incensed; the team is simply desperate, having lost four consecutive after opening the campaign with a startling six triumphs in a row. Mix in any other clichés, but one wonders, historically, do desperate teams usually prevail or continue their free-falls?

New York needs wins, but their victory over Atlanta — which broke their own four game slide — helped make Thursday night slightly less urgent for the Giants.

NFL Power Rankings: Week 12 (Shakira Edition)

Email Post Email Post
shakira-beach

As you know, Myles typically compiles the NFL Power Rankings on a weekly basis and then I provide running commentary throughout.

Last week, Myles threw down the gauntlet and challenged me to rank the top 15 teams in the NFL, after which he would edit and provide commentary.

In my effort to provide you with the best Power Rankings possible, I obviously obliged.

So here I am, and for at least one week folks, you will actually get objective and rational analysis about the best teams in the NFL. In addition, I have ensured that my Week 12 Power Rankings are far better than anything ever produced by Big MB by decorating them with pictures of Shakira.

Enjoy.

Hey guys! First off, let me apologize, as to the fact that our last Power Ranking could not be posted due to a few minor server issues last week. So no jumps and drops this week, as there was no Week 3.

Thanks for tuning in this week as I have a very special treat for you fans: I am making an NBA Power Rankings that will be created not by me, but by you..the FANS!

Ok, not completely, but I rank em, and then you tell me why they deserve to be in that spot.

Two weeks left before the playoffs in standard league play. There is no room for making careless errors on who you start and sit.

Check on PFI’s Play Em, Bench Em article later this week, as well as Jerod’s Start Em, Sit Em post from yesterday.

Aside from who to start and sit and the sleepers we’ll uncover for you tomorrow, make sure your starters are actually going to be on the football field and not on the bench.

Let’s roll through some of the pertinent injury updates for Week 12:

Reports: Jimmy Clausen Involved in Bar Fight, Notre Dame Still Sucks

I’m an Indiana basketball fan, so you might think I’d have a little bit of empathy for what the Notre Dame football program is going through.

Nope.

Literally adding injury to insult, Notre Dame starting quarterback Jimmy Clausen was reportedly involved in a fight outside a South Bend bar at 2:30 am on Sunday morning. Clausen apparently sustained at least one black eye as a result of the scuffle.

We have received unconfirmed tips to Midwest Sports Fans that Clausen was threatening to give another bar patron a “golden tate” and the subject of the threat did not take too kindly.

I’m kidding…I think.

NFL Week 12 Picks, Points Spreads, TV Schedule, and Announcers (Thanksgiving Weekend)

Email Post Email Post

Update: The NFL Week 17 TV schedule, point spreads, and picks post is up.

——————–

Well, things were not looking so good for me at about 4:15 today.

After my stellar comeback performance in Week 11, I “shot” out of the gates with a 4-6 record during the early games.

Fortunately, I had much better luck (and believe me, I understand how much luck is involved picking NFL games successfully) in the afternoon, nailing all four games plus the Sunday nighter.

This left me at a very respectable 9-6 for the week (87-64 overall) heading into Monday night.

For those of you planning to celebrate Thanksgiving weekend with some NFL wagering, hopefully I can lead you in the right direction again. There are plenty of division matchups this weekend, which are always difficult to predict, so we’ll see if I can keep up my .576 winning percentage.

The Poke Heard ‘Round Jayhawk Nation

KU football coach Mark Mangino’s coaching style is put under the magnifying glass

Loads of controversy are swirling around Jayhawk nation concerning KU’s football coach, Mark Mangino.

A full-fledged investigation spear-headed by the athletic department is underway, mainly because Mangino poked a player in the chest.

I have never played on an organized football team, unless you count my years on the annual powder puff football team. However, I have been a spectator at many organized sporting events and I have seen coaches grab young men by the shirt collar and rip them a new one.

It is also customary for a coach to scream in your face like a drill sergeant, commanding you to get your head in the game. I have also seen the traditional “good game” tap on the rear, which rarely drives complaints.

With constant physical contact displayed between coaches and players, it almost seems silly to read the headline “Investigation of Mangino launched after player complains coach poked him.”

Detroit Pistons Weekly Watch: Trial by Fire in the West

Email Post Email Post

After climbing to 5-4 overall last week, the Pistons have dropped four in a row to some of the best teams in the West—while playing without stalwarts Richard Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince.

They lost a hard fought game at the Palace to the Dallas Mavericks 95-90 and their first 3 games on a 4 game West Coast swing: the Los Angeles Lakers 106-93; the Portland Trail Blazers 87-81; and the Utah Jazz 100-97 in overtime.

Rodney Stuckey and Will Bynum carried the Pistons in the Dallas game, while Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva had off games.

The Pistons fell behind to the Lakers by 28 points and 20 to the Trailblazers before mounting furious comebacks in the fourth quarter that fell short.

——————–

I realized this weekend why I love fantasy sports so much.

As many of you know, I am both an Indiana basketball fan and a Cleveland Browns fan. Thus, my Sunday began with watching the Hoosiers at 9:30 am as they desperately tried to salvage one win in the Puerto Rico Shootout and was then followed by heading to the Browns Backers meetup to watch Cleveland battle the Detroit Lions.

To say that I was desperate to see one of my teams capture a victory would be an understatement.

Unfortunately, both the Hoosiers and Browns did on Sunday what they have proven oh-so-good at doing over the last two years: snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Indiana was done in by a banked-in three pointer with five seconds left after relinquishing a five point lead with five minutes to go. The Browns were done in by a pass interference call on Matt Stafford’s desperation Hail Mary pass, which was followed by an un-timed down that resulted in a touchdown.

One Sunday, two excruciating losses for my two beloved teams. And that is why I love fantasy sports. Without my fantasy football teams to track, what reason would I have as a sports fan not to run out and jump off of my balcony right now?

And on that positive not, let’s look ahead to Week 12 of the fantasy football season!

Coach Dru Joyce Witnesses Cavs Win Over Philly

Since he didn’t sit Courtside (he chose to sit quietly in a Suite), and his picture was not broadcast on the QTube, few Cavs fans knew that Lebron James’ St.Vincent-St. Mary High School Coach was in attendance to witness his former State Champion take on the Philadelphia 76ers.

Before the game, Coach Dru Joyce was the Keynote Speaker at the Rebounders (Official Cleveland Cavalier Booster Club) Chalk Talk Dinner. Many children, STVSTM fans, Cavs Legend Barry Clemens, and longtime Cavalier fans packed into a Quicken Loans Arena Level Two Suite to hear the Coach speak, take pictures with him, ask him questions, and to get his autograph on various items ranging from jackets, T-Shirts, Rise Up! Towels, LeBron memorabilia, and copies of “Shooting Star” books.

—————

Incredibly, we head into the final weekend of the college football regular season with six — six! — teams sporting undefeated records.

Florida, Alabama, Texas, TCU, Cincinnati, and Boise State all have legitimate claims to a national title shot right now, by virtue of the fact that no team has proven to be better on the field.

Obviously either Florida or Alabama will taste defeat before BCS slotting time comes, but it is quite likely that the other four teams will all maintain their spotless status. Quite likely…but they all still have to overcome their Thanksgiving weekend hurdles, and they are hurdles that should not be overlooked.

Florida, Alabama, and Texas have rivalry games against Florida State, Auburn, and Texas A&M respectively. Cincinnati must face a Big Ten foe in Illinois while Boise State has to fend off a solid Nevada squad. (TCU has a cakewalk game against New Mexico.)

College football fans are in for a tremendous amount of debate and controversy should five, four, or even three teams finish the season undefeated. What happens during Thanksgiving weekend will go a long way towards determining exactly how much debate and controversy this bowl season will have.

Monday Night Football Preview

Tennessee Titans (3-6) at Houston Texans (5-4)

  • Titans-Texans Date: Monday, November 23rd
  • Titans-Texans Kickoff Time: 8:30
  • Titans-Texans TV Network: ESPN
  • Titans-Texans Announcers: Mike Tirico, Ron Jaworski, and Jon Gruden
  • Titans-Texans Point Spread: Texans -4.5
  • Titans-Texans Over-Under: 48
  • Titans-Texans Spread Pick by Jerod: A few weeks ago this did not look like such a fun game. Now that Houston is a game out of the AFC Wild Card, and Vince Young has made the Titans competitive again, this should be a really entertaining game. First bit of advice: take the over. You’ve got Chris Johnson on the same field as Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson. There will be scoring. I don’t think Tennessee is a world beater by any means, but this is still a team that went 13-3 last year and that is playing much better now with Vince Young at QB. And do you really trust Houston yet? I don’t. Titans-Texans free pick: Titans +4.5

Titans-Texans Analysis

After the Titans fell to 0-6, like many football fans, I let out a sigh and lamented, “How could it have gone so wrong, so quickly?”

Three wins later, the answer to what was wrong appears to have been Kerry Collins. During the Titans six-game losing streak, their fans were quick to excuse Collins’ consistently putrid performances as a function of the team’s “lack of weapons.”

With Vince Young now behind the helm however, this “weaponless” offense has begun to produce.

Connecticut Wins One for Slain Teammate, Defeats ND 33-30 in 2OT

Email Post Email Post

It was another disappointing outcome for Notre Dame fans and their players. Senior day at Notre Dame was spoiled by the Huskies.

Once again you can’t blame the offense because the Fighting Irish’s offense played very well today. They did a very nice job of balancing the running and passing game, but once again the defense let this team down. The Irish let thew Huskies run all over them, with the Huskies running for a total of 231 yards and two TDs.

And you can’t overlook the dedication that UConn showed all game. You could tell they were playing with a purpose. This was UConn’s most memorable win in its existence because it is the first time they have won since cornerback Jasper “Jazz” Howard was stabbed to death.

Jazz this is for you,” UConn coach Randy Edsall said“Best win we have ever had.”

The QBs of the 2007 NFL Draft: The Worst Single Position of Any NFL Draft Class Ever?

Email Post Email Post

We are now more than 2 1/2 years into the NFL careers of the players who were drafted in 2007.

If you scroll down the list of first round draftees, several names will jump out at you of players who have already carved out solid beginnings to their careers.

In a few cases, some of the first round draftees from 2007 have proven to be franchise cornerstones worthy of high picks: Calvin Johnson, Joe Thomas, Adrian Peterson, Patrick Willis, Darrelle Revis, Ted Ginn Jr, to name a few.

In other cases, however, the players drafted in 2007 have proven to be worth far less than what their draft position might suggest. This is no more evident than with respect to the two QBs drafted in the first round in 2007: JaMarcus Russell and Brady Quinn.

My goodness, what wasted first round picks those two are proving to be.

And amazingly, Russell and Quinn are not alone. Several other QBs were taken in 2007, none of whom have amounted to much of anything. Let’s review the carnage.
