——————–
I realized this weekend why I love fantasy sports so much.
As many of you know, I am both an Indiana basketball fan and a Cleveland Browns fan. Thus, my Sunday began with watching the Hoosiers at 9:30 am as they desperately tried to salvage one win in the Puerto Rico Shootout and was then followed by heading to the Browns Backers meetup to watch Cleveland battle the Detroit Lions.
To say that I was desperate to see one of my teams capture a victory would be an understatement.
Unfortunately, both the Hoosiers and Browns did on Sunday what they have proven oh-so-good at doing over the last two years: snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
Indiana was done in by a banked-in three pointer with five seconds left after relinquishing a five point lead with five minutes to go. The Browns were done in by a pass interference call on Matt Stafford’s desperation Hail Mary pass, which was followed by an un-timed down that resulted in a touchdown.
One Sunday, two excruciating losses for my two beloved teams. And that is why I love fantasy sports. Without my fantasy football teams to track, what reason would I have as a sports fan not to run out and jump off of my balcony right now?
And on that positive not, let’s look ahead to Week 12 of the fantasy football season!
Before we look forward we’ll take a quick glance back at Week 11 to see how my picks turned out:
- Start ‘em hits: Ricky Williams, MIA; Greg Jennings, GB
- Start ‘em misses: Philip Rivers, SD;Â Kellen Winslow, TB; Green Bay D/ST
- Sit ‘em hits: Todd Heap, BAL
- Sit ‘em misses: Matt Ryan, ATL; Jamaal Charles, KC; Bernard Berrian, MIN; Miami Dolphins D/ST
For the record, I’m not too upset about the Berrian sit call. I only classified him as a miss because he caught a TD, but he only had two catches for 11 yards. Still, as well know, TDs are what it’s all about.
And while I’m disappointed that I led you astray regarding Matt Ryan and Jamaal Charles, those are both calls I’d make again.
In the case of Charles, it does show you why siding with RBs for flex spots can oftentimes work out well for you. He only had 66 yards on offense (rushing/passing combined) but scored two TDs when you include his KO return. It just goes to show you that touches are important and can lead to production even when a matchup might not dictate it.

Week 12 Start ‘Em, Sit ‘Em Lineup Advice
Week 12 Start ‘em, Sit ‘em Picks: Quarterbacks
Start ‘Em: Carson Palmer, CIN (vs Cleveland)
The Browns made me suffer through this afternoon’s debacle, so I’m kicking this week’s start em, sit em post off by throwing them under the bus. (Wait…yep…Matthew Stafford just threw another touchdown.)
Unreal.
Carson Palmer has not been incredible this season. Take away his five TD game against the Bears and, coming into Week 11, he had thrown only nine TDs against seven INTs. Solid, but nothing great.
Here’s the thing though: that five TD performance he had against the Bears could very well be what we see against the Browns. If Matthew Stafford and the Lions can throw five TD passes against Cleveland, how many will an established QB throw? Even if it’s not five, he’ll throw two or three.
Palmer threw two TDs when the Bengals and Browns met up in Cleveland earlier this year. This game is in Cincy, so I’m projecting three…and, based on what I saw today, probably being conservative in doing so.
Carson Palmer Week 12 fantasy projection: 315 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT
Other start ‘em QBs in Week 12:
- Aaron Rodgers at Detroit is a no-brainer, as is Philip Rivers against KC and Brett Favre at home against Chicago.
- Matt Ryan rebounded nicely in Week 11 and should have a solid day against Tampa Bay.
Sit ‘em: Tony Romo, DAL (vs Oakland)
Tony Romo leads the Cowboys against Oakland on Thanksgiving Day, and though you may want to start him so that your Thanksgiving football viewing is more exciting, you would be better off going with your alternate choice.
As I write this, the Bengals are leading the Raiders 17-10 but Carson Palmer has not thrown a TD pass. (Granted, he has two rushing TDs, but you don’t exactly bank on your QB getting you rushing TDs.) If you study the statistics, you would not be surprised by the success that Oakland’s pass D is having. Coming into Week 11 they had given up only eight TD passes on the season.
Considering the struggles that Romo and the Cowboys’ passing game have been having recently, I think this is a matchup to stay away from.
Against the Eagles, Packers, and Redskins the last three weeks Romo has thrown one TD in each game. He hasn’t been terrible, but 10-12 point days from your starting QB aren’t always enough to bring victory. If you have a solid alternative option with a more favorable matchup (example: Carson Palmer), use it.
Romo is nothing more than a middle-of-the-road fantasy QB for Week 12.
Tony Romo Week 12 fantasy projection: 240 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT
Other sit ‘em QBs for Week 12:
- Washington continues to shut down opposing passing games, meaning Donovan McNabb should probably be shut down for your team this week.
- I know that Matthew Stafford was awesome against Cleveland…but it was against Cleveland. Green Bay is a little better against the pass and playing decent football right now. Don’t let the five TDs seduce you into playing Stafford over another more solid option.
Week 12 Start ‘em, Sit ‘em Picks: Running Backs
Start ‘Em: Justin Forsett, SEA (at St. Louis)
Last week I said that I wanted to see what Forsett would do in Week 11 against a tough run defense (MIN) before I totally bought into his fantasy studliness. Obviously from where he is listed this week, you know that I’m buying in. This is especially so in PPR leagues.
As expected, Forsett did nothing on the ground in Week 11. He ran nine times for nine yards. Whoop-di-do. However, Forsett did grab a one-yard garbage TD late in the game and also brought the value was expected of rhim in the passing game, where he caught eight balls for 80 yards. So overall Forsett had 89 total yards and a TD. Against a defense like Minnesota, that’s not too shabby.
In Week 12, Forsett gets to play the St. Louis Rams. While the Rams have been playing better defensively, there will be much more room for Forsett to run around than there was this past week.
Coming into Week 11, the Rams were 28th in the league in total defense and were giving up 27.7 points per game. Arizona was well on its way to a great offensive day against the Rams in Week 11 before Kurt Warner got hurt and their offensive attack stalled. Still, the Cardinals ran for 183 yards and scored a TD on the ground.
Forsett will be able to take advantage and should be in your lineup. (The only caveat here is the health of Julius Jones. But even if Jones is healthy enough to play, he is always terrible on the road and Forsett will still have value as a receiver.)
Justin Forsett Week 12 fantasy projections: 80 yards rushing, 7 rec, 65 yards receiving, 1 TD
Update 11/25: Upon further review, I am going to knock down Forsett’s rushing yardage projection just a notch. The Seahawks are only averaging about 84 yards rushing as a team, so I doubt Forsett reaches that by himself, especially with Jim Mora’s pronouncement that Julius Jones is the starter upon his return to the lineup. There is nothing definitive yet on Jones, but I still like Forsett even if Jones does play.
Other start ‘em RBs for Week 12:
- Even if you doubt that Ricky Williams can keep up his crazy production from the past couple of weeks, this is not the week to act on those doubts. The Dolphins play the Bills, who have one of the worst run D’s in the league.
- Beanie Wells continues to run well and get into the end zone. He needs to be in your lineup.
- Look, I’m as wary of playing New England running backs as anyone, but Maroney scored a TD for the fifth straight week in Week 11, actually punching it in twice against the Jets. That kind of consistent production cannot be ignored.
- Jason Snelling and his two Week 11 TDs need to be in your Week 12 lineup if Michael Turner is out. Whoever is running the ball for the Falcons is a solid start.
Sit ‘em: Kevin Smith, DET (vs Green Bay)
As I mentioned in regards to Matthew Stafford above, don’t be fooled by Kevin Smith’s Week 11 numbers. Yes, he totaled 149 yards rushing and receiving and scored a TD, but he also did it against Cleveland’s terrible D.
Coming into Week 11, Smith had run for 167 yards in his four previous games and had not scored. He also had only nine receptions for 68 yards, so the receiving yards in Week 11 were clearly an anomaly.
In Week 12, Smith goes up against a Packers D that was 4th in the league against the run coming into Week 11. The 49ers, led by the mighty Frank Gore, ran for only 69 yards against Green Bay, mainly because the Packers got up early and the 49ers had to throw to catch up.
Detroit will no doubt find themselves in a similar situation, which will likely limit Smith’s value. I just don’t see him being anywhere near as big a part of the passing game in Week 12 as he was in Week 11.
Kevin Smith Week 12 fantasy projection: 45 yards rushing, 3 rec, 25 yards receiving, 0 TDs
Other sit ‘em RBs for Week 12:
- Knowshon Moreno had a nice average in Week 11, but not many Broncos are going to be seeing the end zone until Kyle Orton gets healthy. And even once Orton is healthy, this is an offense that may struggle to find a rhythm for the rest of the year.
- For the record, I’d really think twice (maybe three times) before I remove either of the guys I’m about to discuss…but if you are a believer in matchups, here are two guys with bad ones. If you are in a non-PPR league, Ray Rice might be a guy you think about sitting this week. He’ll still probably get 100-125 total yards, but Pittsburgh has given up only two rushing TDs all season. The same goes for Matt Forte, who is a better receiver than runner, and how faces a team (MIN) that has given up only two rushing TDs all year.
- Cadillac Williams continues to struggle to get anything going on the ground for an offense that just is not very good and that is trying to work in a rookie QB.
Week 12 Start ‘em, Sit ‘em Picks: Wide Receivers
Start ‘Em: Derrick Mason, BAL (vs Pittsburgh)
The Steelers are struggling, having dropped two straight games, but they remain stout against the run. Against the pass, however, the Steelers have proven to be suspect. In Week 11, the Chiefs threw for 248 yards and two TDs. Heading into Week 11, the Steelers were only 12th in the league against the pass (208.7 yards per game) had been giving up more than one passing TD per game.
Oh, and they are still without Troy Polamalu.
Enter Derrick Mason, his 142 receiving yards in Week 11, and a desperate Baltimore Ravens team. I think the Ravens will understand that they have to throw the ball to win and will try to do just that. Derrick Mason should be beneficiary of a lot of targets and he is still good enough to take advantage.
Derrick Mason Week 12 fantasy projection: 7 rec, 110 yards, 1 TD
Other start ‘em WRs for Week 12:
- Mike Sims-Walker scored another TD this week despite only having three catches. In Week 12 he faces San Francisco’s very suspect pass defense. MSW could put up numbers similar to what Greg Jennings did in Week 11 (100+ yards, TD).
- Jerricho Cotchery continues to be a consistent source of catches, yards, and TDs. He’s a very solid #2 WR and is a solid play even against a very good pass D like Carolina.
- I sing his praises week after week and I’ll do it again here. Nate Burleson is not a TD machine by any means (he has only three on the season) but he does consistently catch 6-8 balls and get 70-80 yards. If you’re in a PPR league, this is a guy who always gives you positive production.
Sit ‘em: Braylon Edwards, NYJ (vs Carolina)
There are so many reasons to sit Braylon Edwards…let’s count ‘em out.
- He sucks, as his one-catch, 10 yard performance in Week 11 showed.
- The Jets play Carolina, which has a very solid pass defense.
- The Jets are quarterbacked by a rookie, which can lead to volatility in numbers.
- The Jets aren’t playing on Monday night, which is the only time that Braylon ever steps it up and plays well.
I’m sure I could find some more if I really thought about it, but do you really need any more? Braylon is the third option in a Jets’ passing game that isn’t very prolific in the first place. Look elsewhere and stop hoping he turns it around. He won’t.
Braylon Edwards Week 12 fantasy projection: 3 rec, 33 yards, 0 TD
Other sit ‘em WRs for Week 12:
- Don’t be fooled by Mohamed Massaquoi’s big Week 11. The Browns play Cincinnati’s very good pass defense in Week 12, which makes anything close to a repeat performance highly unlikely.
- Be wary of Steve Smith in Week 12. Yes, he’s caught three TDs over the last two weeks, but he faces the Jets and Darrelle Revis in Week 12. I’d only sit him if you have a really good alternative, but just be careful.
- It looks like Pierre Garcon has passed Austin Collie as the #3 option in the Colts passing game. Collee struggled against the Patriots and had only one catch in Week 11. He’s a Colt, so he’s always capable of a TD, but I’d only play him this week against Houston if I had no other options.
Week 12 Start ‘em, Sit ‘em Picks: Tight Ends
Start ‘Em: Zach Miller, OAK (at Dallas)
That loud cheer you heard erupt Sunday afternoon was stubborn owners of Zach Miller who were rewarded for their patience first with the benching of JaMarcus Russell and then with a TD in Week 11. This guy is one of the more talented all-around tight ends out there and is capable of so much more than what he’s been producing. With Russell now on the bench, and thr halfway competent Bruce Gradkowski in the lineup, better times should be ahead for Miller.
The Raiders face a pretty good Dallas D on Thanksgiving Day, but I still think Miller and Gradkowski can have a solid day together, even if the Raiders aren’t as effective throwing the ball down the field. I look for a repeat of Miller’s Week 11, which was pretty decent.
Zach Miller Week 12 fantasy projection: 5 rec, 65 yards, 1 TD
Other start ‘em TEs in Week 12:
- Visanthe Shiancoe just keeps catching touchdowns. Keep starting him folks. (Same with Vernon Davis.)
- John Carlson did not have a catch in Week 11, but I think he could reverse that trend in Week 12. He shouldn’t have to block as much and might even be able to steal a TE. An option if you’re really in need.
Sit ‘em: Jeremy Shockey, NO (vs New England)
Surprised to see a Saint in the sit ‘em category? I have to admit that I kind of am as well. But the numbers don’t lie:
- Shockey has not caught more than three passes since Week 8.
- He has only caught one TD since Week 1 (when he had two).
- Robert Meachem has emerged as a very solid red zone target for Drew Brees and is stealing what might otherwise be TDs for Shockey.
- The Patriots have a solid defense and while they won’t shut the Saints down, I think they will be able to make things difficult on Shockey.
Shockey is a Saint, so he’s always capable of having a big week if he and Brees develop a rapport and rhythm during the game. However, based on his recent numbers, I want to see it happen before I’m buying in.
Jeremy Shockey Week 12 fantasy projection: 3 rec, 21 yards, 0 TD
Other sit ‘em TEs in Week 12:
- I’d have to have a pretty good TE to sit him, but Jason Witten is a guy that has been struggling this year and who faces a decent pass D in Oakland. Witten has only one TD on the season and the Cowboys have scored only two TDs the last two weeks.
- Tony Scheffler had one good week this season that propped up his numbers. Don’t be fooled. Sit him.
Week 12 Start ‘em, Sit ‘em Picks: Defense / Special Teams Units
Start ‘Em: New York Jets D/ST (vs Carolina)
I was bullish on the Jets before the season started and they were very good defensively early on. Lately, however, they’ve struggled. I like them in Week 12 though because I think the Jets-Panthers game has low scoring written all over it and I think the Jets can harass Jake Delhomme into some turnovers.
We know that Carolina is going to run the ball well, but the Jets give up less than one rushing TD per game, which isn’t terrible. A lot of the defenses that might be on your waiver wire have unfavorable matchups this week, so the Jets could be a good option for you if you’re dissatisfied with your current D.
New York Jets D/ST Week 12 fantasy projection: 17 pts or less, 2+ INTs, 2 sacks
Other start ‘em D/ST units in Week 12:
- Cincinnati is facing Cleveland, so you have to like to them. Same thing with Dallas, which is facing Oakland.
- I also like Green Bay’s defense. I know that they have some injury concerns, but the Lions are the Lions and the Packers are adept at getting sacks and turnovers.
- I know that the Giants D has been struggling, but they face Denver’s struggling O in Week 12. Solid start. Same with Philly, which faces Washington’s hapless offense.
Sit ‘em: New Orleans D/ST and New England D/ST (playing eachother)
I can’t wait for this game, but I wouldn’t want to own either defense in it. Remember what happened in the Colts-Patriots game? 60+ points were scored and neither defense was very valuable from a fantasy perspective. With Drew Brees facing Tom Brady, I see something similar happening on Sunday. Find alternatives if you can.
New Orleans D/ST and New England D/ST Week 12 fantasy projection: lots of points, few turnovers
Other sit ‘em D/ST units in Week 12:
- I’d also be wary of the defense’s in the Baltimore-Pittsburgh game. I see this game being high scoring. I’d want a pretty good alternative to play in their place, but I wouldn’t hesitate to use it.
It is definitely crunch time now as we zoom towards the playoffs. That’s part of the reason why I wanted to get this post up early this week, even before the Monday night game has been played. A lot of you have big decisions before the Thursday games, and I wanted the comment section ready for your questions. Ask away.
Have a great Thanksgiving everyone, and may you all get off to a good start in your Week 12 matchups while chowing down on turkey and stuffing.
