TSICAMW: “NFL needs to press Sanders”

Starting a new semi-regular feature: TSTICAMW (aka Today’s Statement I Couldn’t Agree More With).

The premise is simple. All day long I stumble upon blog posts and stories relevant to our readers here at MSF. When I find something that I really agree with — something that, in fact, I could not agree more with — I will post it under the heading TSICAMW.

And today’s TSICAMW comes from the good folks at Pro Football Talk, who provided their take this morning on the smoke that is beginning to build around Deion Sanders’ relationship with Eugene Parker and how that might or might not be influencing the “mentoring” that Primetime is doing for players like Michael Crabtree, Dez Bryant, and Noel Devine.

And you know what they say about “where there’s smoke…

Here is the statement and a link:

Friday Morning Would…You Rather Own Mohamed Massaquoi or Pierre Garcon?

Email Post Email Post
pierre-garcon-massaquoi

Before we begin this Friday’s Morning Would column, I want to make a declaration about one of its subjects, Browns rookie WR Mohammed Massaquoi.

And that declaration is as follows: henceforth on Midwest Sports Fans, Mohammed Massaquoi will be known as MoMass. This a common practice among fantasy writers and players who are lazy and don’t feel like typing out long, complicated names (ex. Maurice Jones-Drew is “MJD” and DeAngelo Williams is “DAW”).

You see, as much as I love MoMass, both as a building block for the Browns and as a fantasy sleeper for the balance of 2009, his name is one of those difficult ones that is very hard to get through typing without making a mistake.

Here, I’ll try a couple of times typing it at my normal rate without stopping: Mohammed Maaquia; Mohammed Massaquoi, Mohammed Massaqoo, Mohammed Massaquoi, Mohammed Massaqio.

As you can see, the second and fourth attempts were spot on. But 40% accuracy is not acceptable to be. so I’m shortening it to MoMass and that’s that.

And now we can move on to more important subjects…

Two of the hottest names in the WR sleeper category this week — and certainly two of the players that I have been asked about the most in the comments section of the Week 5 start em, sit em post — are MoMass and Pierre Garcon.

This morning, I will analyze which of these two players I’d rather have on my team in Week 5 and beyond.

A Look at the NFC After Week 4

Email Post Email Post
nfc-logo

After my rundown of the AFC, it’s time to change gears and look at the NFC.

NFC EAST

1. New York Giants 4-0

The Giants, again, are off to a hot start, led by the younger Manning brother, Eli, who is one of the most underrated QB in the league. His presence in the pocket can now be compared to his older brother, Peyton.

The defense is allowing the 2nd lowest yards per game, and the running game is 6th best in the league. All these factors contributed to wins against Washington, Dallas, Tampa, and Kansas City. While you could say two of those wins are against teams that are not very good, you should look at the Dallas game.

Beating Dallas at home, in their new stadium, just proves that this Giants team is, once again, the real deal.

Jerod Talking Fantasy Football on JOCK 98.7 FM Friday Morning at 10:40

jock-97

I will be talking fantasy football with Ned Reynolds and Scott Puryear on the JOCK 98.7 FM’s Sports Reporters show tomorrow morning around 10:40 am Central Time.

JOCK 98.7 covers southwest Missouri, but fear not…we are in the age of the Interwebs, which means that you can listen online. Here is the link if you want to stop by and listen to me say crazy things like “start Derek Anderson over Peyton Manning” and “of course I’d play Julius Jones over Adrian Peterson” just to stir things up a bit. (“Listen Live” link in top right hand corner.)

Click here to listen live to JOCK 98.7

This is a regular spot that I will be doing each week and I thank Scott and Ned for the opportunity to come on and make good use of all the otherwise meaningless fantasy football research I do on a weekly basis. The first one went well last week (damn right you should start Kevin Kolb, I said) and I anticipate more of the same tomorrow.

Have a great Friday everyone.

Wisconsin-Ohio State Preview and Prediction

Email Post Email Post
Pryor In Madison Last Year

Ohio State v Wisconsin has been one of the more exciting Big Ten matchups over the past three decades, with the Bucks holding only a 13-10-1 advantage since 1980.

In fact, there has even been some animosity that has carried over onto the field in the past.

Remember 2003 in Madison, Buckeye LB Robert Reynolds tackling then-Badger QB Jim Sorgi, choking the QB and knocking him out of the game?

Ironically Ohio State choked the game away, giving up a late 80-yard TD pass to Lee Evans, losing 17-10.

At the time, my grandpa claimed the 1993 (14-14 tie) game ended on a blocked field goal by Ohio State because they had 12 players on the field. He was old, so was that, and this is 2009. Let’s move on.

4th & Short Podcast: Spread Picks for Key Week 5 Matchups

Email Post Email Post

Earlier today, Big MB and I recorded the first edition of a new weekly podcast that will be called 4th and Short. In it, we will each be providing four “locks” against the spread for the upcoming NFL week.

Among the games that we discuss this week: Colts-Titans, Browns-Bills, Ravens-Bengals, and — of course — Broncos-Patriots.

We had been doing this segment after our Monday Night Football Podcast, but obviously spread picks do you know good once the week is over. Hence, why we’ve decided to split that podcast into two.

So whether you want our advice as actual guidance (full disclosure: neither of us actually bets on the NFL), or simply for entertainment purposes, hit play below, grab the mp3 directly, or listen to us on iTunes.

Fantasy Quick Hit: Ranking Slaton, Mendenhall, Harrison, Moreno, and Coffee for Week 5

Email Post Email Post

While preparing to answer another wave of questions in the comment section of my Week 5 start em, sit em post, the lightbulb of inspiration flickered above my head.

I spend so much time answering similar questions about similar players, that I might as well consolidate some of those answers into posts.

Don’t worry, I’ll still answer your comments directly. But for the myriad people who are interested in Steve Slaton, Rashard Mendenhall, Jerome Harrison, Knowshon Moreno, and Glenn Coffee in Week 5 — many of whom seem to be faced with the task of choosing between two or three of them for starting spots — this post should help.

Here are my quick hit Week 5 rankings for these five players this week, plus some explanation.

“John Calipari Rule” Now In Effect for Letters of Intent

Email Post Email Post

From our friends at The World According to MoonDog:

In what could be called the John Calipari Rule, the Collegiate Commissioners Association issued a memo last week that immediately prohibits National Letters of Intent from being modified.

The CCAs action comes about as more highly rated prep basketball recruits had increasingly asked for amendments to the letters of intent.

While the amendments varied, most centered on a recruits ability to be let out of his commitment without penalty if the coach leaves the school for any reason.

Follow the link to read more about the “John Calipari Rule” that will now be in effect for national letters of intent…and why MoonDog is suggesting it be named after Mr. Ethics himself.

From Cream to Crimson: The 2009 Journey of Bill Lynch

bill-lynch-2009

I don’t know if Bill Lynch is the man who can return Indiana football to its glory years of the 1980s under Bill Mallory — and yes, for IU, those were glory years — but I am definitely rooting for the guy.

And although the Hoosiers have fattened up on some weak non-conference meat so far this season, certainly there have been Hoosier teams that have started out worse than 3-2. So Lynch and the Hoosiers have that going for them, along with the positive vibes from the Hoosiers’ solid performance at Michigan.

For goodness sakes though, will someone please get Bill Lynch some sunscreen?

Random, Funny Video for Others Irritated by Facebook

Email Post Email Post

I was an early adopter to Facebook who quickly fell in love, used it throughout the day…and now no longer has an account.

The reasons for my Facebook deactivation are plentiful, but this entertaining video (hat tip to @jimmytraina and yesterday’s Hot Clicks) sums up a few of them pretty well.

Greatest LOL moments of the video:

  • The 0:46 mark: the “guy with a fro”
  • The end, where it shows what I am assuming is the lead singer’s high school photo. Classic.

The guy’s singing voice is terrible, so it’s somewhat difficult to sit through the whole thing, but still entertaining enough for me to share:

I’ll Tell You This: WRs on the Move, the MLB Playoffs, and Who is the Best QB in the NFL?

Email Post Email Post

1. 49ers Barking Up the Right (Crab) Tree

Finally, early on Wednesday morning, the 49ers and first round draft pick Michael Crabtree agreed to a deal that will get the WR on the field. The deal was worth $32 million over 6 years with $17 million guaranteed and up to $8 million in additional incentives.

If Crabtree makes the Pro Bowl in two of his first five years, the contract is void after 5 years.

I’ll Tell You This:

I’ve been begging the 49ers for weeks to just get this deal done, and now they have.

The team is already 3-1 without Crabtree and have been my NFC dark-horse since the beginning of the season. Now with Crabtree inked and Gore coming back to the line-up soon, this team moves officially into my “Contender” category.

Gomez

As Orlando Cabrera doubled up Magglio Ordonez in the top of the 9th, one could swear seeing Jack Morris walk off the mound with an exhilirating fist pump, while those lucky enough to glance at first base would see shades of Kent Hrbek – arms raised in celebration.

And after his two run shot to take the lead in the 7th, one could have doubtlessly heard the crowd’s eruption after Kirby Puckett’s Game 6 homerun.

And as Alexi Casilla came to the plate in the bottom of the 12th, the phantom of Gene Larkin revisited the hallowed ground, as the ball reached the outfield and the winning runner sunk into a sea of white pinstripes.

The ghosts of Metrodome past came out for one last night. One spectacular night. And strutted their stuff one final time.

Fantasy Impact: Braylon Edwards Traded to Jets, Chansi Stuckey to Browns

chansi-stuckey

This morning the Cleveland Browns pulled the trigger on a deal sending former Pro-Bowler Braylon Edwards to the New York Jets.

The Cleveland Browns in return receive wide receiver Chansi Stuckey, linebacker Jason Trusnik, and two draft picks. Those picks are rumored to be a 3rd round pick and a 5th round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.

So how does this impact the Cleveland Browns, New York Jets, and your fantasy teams in 2009?
