Strong Reactions on Deadspin’s Decision to Post ESPN Rumors

In what should be a surprise to no one, there are strong reactions popping up across the blogosphere this morning regarding Deadspin’s decision to post various rumors about ESPN employees that it has received over the years.

In case you’re just now becoming aware of this story, the posts by Deadspin editor AJ Daulerio, written in the immediate wake of the breaking story of Steve Phillips’ affair and subsequent leave of absence, detailed explicit rumors of sexual depravity and quid pro quo at the World Wide Leader.

I am using this space to provide my own judgments and opinions right now, as I have a pending interview request with AJ for later this morning and would like to speak with him first (so stay tuned for that).

But others have made their feelings known, with some in the sports blogging community decidedly not in Deadspin’s favor on this one.

Message to Larry Dolan: If You Pay Them, They Will Come!

Email Post Email Post
cliff-lee-sabathia

Have you been paying attention to the Major League Baseball Playoffs? If so, and you’re a present or former Cleveland Indians Fan, you have noticed the ridiculous amount of former Indians playing outstanding baseball.

Meanwhile, Cleveland Indians owner Larry Dolan can’t figure out why the Indians’ attendance has plummeted since the Dick Jacobs days.

Here is a hint Larry: you have only paid Grady Sizemore, and that is it.

The Indians produce a mediocre team year in and year out, and the fans day by day miss Dick Jacobs more and more.

The title, “If You Pay Them, They Will Come” means that if you pay the players you let go, your fans would appear in groves to Progressive Field. With the talent you let go and that is currently stretched across the eight teams that made this year’s playoffs, you too would be contending for a World Series title.

Non-Sports: Hilariously Awful Radio Prank

Email Post Email Post

Just found this via The Big Lead’s morning roundup and had to post even though it is in no way related to sports.

It may be the most hilariously awful radio prank…maybe ever. The payoff is at the end.

Here is the post about it on Emails From Crazy People, where they have a good discussion about it in the comment section. You’ll want to read the thread beginning from the second comment down. It describes what happens after the clip’s shocking ending.

Thursday WYNTR: The Baseball Playoffs Get Infinitely More Interesting After a Bad Day for ESPN

The biggest on-field news in the sports world yesterday obviously revolves around the Philadelphia Phillies beating the LA Dodgers to reach the World Series.

The biggest off-field news in the sports world yesterday involved ESPN, Deadspin, and some pretty lurid tales of sex, ego, and quid pro quo. We discussed this as it was happening, but there have also been new developments in the “ESPN Horndog Dossier” since we signed off yesterday.

But that was yesterday. It’s now Thursday, and we already have the most important news of today and it’s not even 6:30 CT yet: Ozzie Guillen will be working for Fox as a studio analyst during this year’s World Series. Yep, this is going to be great.

And now the rest of What You Need To Read for Thursday, October 22nd, brought to you by…Kate Beckinsale.

Steve Phillips Just the Tip of a Large, Sordid ESPN Iceberg? (Updated)

If I were an ESPN exec or employee, and I read the latest post by Daulerio over at Deadspin, I’d be shaking in my boots a little right now. Excerpt after the jump.

I just emailed Daulerio to ask if they were really going to be emptying the vault of all the tips and accusations they received regarding sexual craziness at ESPN. His response: “Stay tuned…”

Will do.

My, my, my Steve Phillips. Looks like you may have directly and indirectly screwed up a whole lot of peoples’ lives.

Wednesday WYNTR: Steve Phillips’ Affair, Jay Calls Out Jay, and More Browns Misery

It is once again new feature time.

I realized this morning that every day there is one blog post I look forward to more than any other: The Big Lead’s morning link roundups…which, coincidentally, has not been posted yet this morning.

WTF?

This unexpected void in my morning gave me the opportunity to participate in an exciting new morning activity: thinking. And what I got to thinking and wondering about is why I’m not putting together a similar post on a daily basis for you, our trusty MSF reader.

So I decided to start doing it. And if the old adage “imitation is the most sincere form of flattery” is true, then consider yourself flattered TBL. We’ll obviously put our own spin on things, but we’re not trying to hide the source of our inspiration.

Look for this new feature every morning, probably around 7-7:15 Central Time. And if you’re a blogger or an interested reader who likes sharing good stuff you read, send me tips.

And now, without further ado, onto this morning’s WYNTR (that stands for What You Need To Read), sponsored by birthday girl Kim Kardashian (who probably has a better chance of completing that pass than Derek Anderson…)

Quick Note on Podcasts

Email Post Email Post

A quick note on our podcasting schedule this week: it’s a little f’d up.

Because of some new equipment we got in recently (which will make the audio sound much better) we are not going to be able to record the Fantasy Flash or 4th and Short for posting today and tomorrow, as we usually do.

I am hoping to get both of them up before I leave for Cleveland on Friday, but I’d say the chances of it happening are 50/50.

Next week we’ll have all the technical issues worked out and be back on our regular schedule.

Thanks for your patience. Hopefully you will accept the following video as our official goodwill gesture to make up for the reduced podcast schedule and not be too upset with us:

Jeff Fisher Loves Him Some Peyton Manning

I know that the Tennessee Titans got blasted 59-0 on Sunday — wait, Tom Brady just threw another TD pass to Randy Moss, it’s now 65-0 pending the extra point — and that their season is quickly spiraling down the john, but who would have expected their ultra-competitive coach to be donning the jersey of a division rival?

That’s just how low things fallen, however. In less than a year, the Titans have gone from 10-0 juggernaut to seeing their coach wear a Peyton Manning jersey and say that he finally “like a winner.”

As Bill Simmons might say, ladies and gentleman your 2009 Tennessee Titans!

Michael Crabtree: Start or Sit for Week 7?

Email Post Email Post
michael-crabtree-fantasy-football-week-9-waiver-wire-advice-pickups

Just a couple of weeks ago it appeared like a realistic possibility that Michael Crabtree could sit out the entire 2009 seasons and re-enter the 2010 draft in one of the most ill-advised decisions ever.

Now, as we head into Week 7, Michael Crabtree is a starting WR in the NFL.

Amazing how quickly things change, huh?

Crabtree got into camp just as the 49ers were entering their bye week and has had two weeks to acclimate himself to the offense, to his teammates, and to life in the NFL. No-nonsense coach Mike Singletary apparently believes that Crabtree has acclimated himself quite well, considering he has reportedly pegged Crabtree to start over Josh Morgan this Sunday when the 49ers play Houston.

Now that Singletary has made his decision, fantasy football owners have their own decision to make: start or sit Michael Crabtree in Week 7?

For the first week in a long time, there is not a Manning in first place.

There is however, a certain quarterback who beat a Manning last week in first place, and then another Manning nipping at his heels in second place.

Yes, the Saints have come marching in during the first part of the 2009 season…and they look fantastic. How could you put anyone else at #1 after their impressive win over New York on Sunday?

There were a lot of upsets this week, and the rankings changed considerably. Hope you all enjoy!

Fantasy Football Week 7 Start Em, Sit Em Lineup Advice and Projections

This post is from 2009!

Head over to MSF Fantasy Sports for our 2010 Week 7 Start / Sit Projections

——————–

I don’t really know that to say about Week 6.

I suppose there were some not-so-surprising results (Tom Brady and Randy Moss dominating, Drew Brees and Marques Colston dominating, Derek Anderson sucking, etc.) but they were countered by some very surprising results.

How does Cedric Benson dominate Baltimore and struggle against Houston? How do the Eagles get dominated by the Raiders? How does Adrian Peterson not get in the endzone when he ran that well. What happened to the time share between Ray Rice and Willis McGahee???

In the end, I guess Week 6 was like every other week: some stuff happened that we expect, some other stuff happened that we didn’t, and now we have to pick up the pieces and move on.

So let’s do it. Onto the Week 7 start em, sit em lineup advice and projections post.

Jerod and the ‘Stache: College Football Picks for Week 8, October 24th

Email Post Email Post

Last week, the ‘Stache (aka KVB) went 4-3 picking the most important games on the college football schedule. His biggest disappointment, of course, was Ohio State’s shocking loss to Purdue.

This week, we don’t have marquee matchups like Oklahoma-Texas and USC-Notre Dame, but there are some pivotal games across the country that will go along way towards deciding conference championships.

Among the games Jerod and the ‘Stache look at this week: BYU-TCU, Iowa-Michigan State, and Penn State-Michigan, among others.

In addition, they take a look back at Ohio State’s loss to Purdue and discuss the future of Terrelle Pryor, plus take a look at the opening BCS standings. And Jerod poses an important question: would the ‘Stache, a dyed-in-the-wool Buckeye fan, become a Michigan fan in exchange for a college football playoff.

You’ll have to listen to find out the answer, and to get your college football picks.
