How should Chicago honor Sweetness?

It appears that the city of Chicago, the Chicago Bears, and the Chicago Park District have been in talks about where to locate a statue to the one and only Chicago Bear that I ever cheered for: one Walter “Sweetness” Payton.

Many issues have come to light. It appears that the park district does not want to put it outside of Soldier Field as they feel that it will take away from the stadium and how it is a tribute to the Armed Services. I find that ironic after the remodeling job. The Payton family and foundation agree and have openly stated that they would never want to take away from the Service men and woman.

So, maybe outside but close to the stadium?

I guess we are going to start out with the Vikings vs. the Packers game this week, and why not?

This game will single-handedly rate higher than any TV program including the NBA finals and the MLB World Series this year.

This just in:

According to ESPN’s James Walker, the latest injury update on Willie Parker of the Pittsburgh Steelers will almost surely be out for tonight’s game against the San Diego Chargers.

Parker has not practiced the last few days because of an injured toe, and players who don’t practice rarely play for the Steelers.

Catching Up with Ben Malcolmson: Journalist Turned Inspiring USC Football Walk-On

Sports Journalism in its truest form sparked inspiration

A lot of little boys have dreams of one day becoming a football player. There is something magical about playing under the stadium lights, cheerleaders belting your name, and getting that clean, crisp jersey dirty.

For those lads out there who can relate to this, think back to your days of PeeWee football. Your mom was terrified to let you on the field and your dad was bursting with pride, secretly reminiscing about his own glory days.

Unfortunately, as the years progress, so does the competition. Those dreams of playing on a college football team become more distant, and reality sinks in for a lot of people.

This was the case for former Dallas resident Ben Malcomson.

Tennessee v Auburn: Underachievers and Overachievers

The Tennessee Volunteers come into their match-up against Auburn a little battered and bruised. The Vols will have to step up and play through the pain to shut down an undefeated Auburn team.

UT Running back Montario Hardesty suffered a knee injury last week against Ohio. Hardesty has been limited in practice but expects to play Saturday. This season has been a coming-out party for Hardesty and the Vols will need him to carry the football.

Nearly the entire Tennessee defense is dealing with minor injuries. Monte Kiffin will have to prepare this unit to face a high-octane Tigers offense. Auburn has scored over 35 points in each of their games so far.

However, everything isn’t as doom and gloom as it sounds for Tennessee.

Kevin Smith Injury Update: Status for Week 4 Looking Much Better

D10-KJONE_SU_B_^_SUNDAY

Courtesy of @TheGNUru, just saw that the latest injury update on Lions running back Kevin Smith is tha this prognosis seems to be improving by the hour.

After reports earlier today listed Smith’s status as uncertain (the dreaded “game time decision), Smith has now reportedly told the Detroit Free Press that he is healthy enough to play on Sunday against the Chicago Bears.

“It’s football, so I’m sure I’ll have to endure some pain, but it’s good enough to go. I feel healthy enough to play at a high level,” Smith said.

Yes, Charlie Weis’ Tenure as Notre Dame Head Coach Can Get Worse

Email Post Email Post

Despite the “decided schematic advantage” that he has brought to South Bend (best seen here and here), Charlie Weis’ tenure at Notre Dame has not gone quite as well as he and the Notre Dame faithful had hoped.

Let’s see, there was that 3-8 record in 2007 that featured losses to Air Force and Navy, and then last season’s 7-6 mark that was highlighted by a loss to Syracuse (a football program on such solid footing that it turned to a former Duke basketball player to play quarterback this year).

The putrid aftertaste of this 10-14 two-year span is most notably seen in this encouraging billboard that a group of ex-Irish football players bought in South Bend before this season started.

But just when you thought that things could not get worse in South Bend, that Weis’ seat could not possibly get hotter, there is this: Notre Dame’s 207-game sellout streak, which dates back all the way to 1973 (around the same time that this photo was taken), is in jeopardy of being broken this weekend.

Update: Well that didn’t take long.  The sellout streak is alive, according to ESPN. I’d like to think we had something to do with it…but I know we didn’t.

Breaking News: Chicago Sports Fans Jilted At the Altar Again

Chicago will not be hosting the 2016 Olympics:

Sucks for the city, and the country, and it’s definitely not going to be good for Obama politically. I believe in poker they call that a “bad beat.”

Chicago Blackhawks’ Opener Starts Bright and Early Today

Email Post Email Post

Chicago Blackhawks fans can now rejoice, for the season opener is now finally here.

The long-awaited return of Chicago hockey is now over, and I couldn’t happier. This year has a Stanley Cup feeling to it as long as Huet plays sharp for most of the season.

The Hawks will play the Florida Panthers in Helsinki, Finland. Florida missed the playoffs last year, and it’s a franchise that is still trying to find its footing. The Hawks come in without forward Marian Hossa due to surgery on his rotator cuff in his shoulder and forward Adam Burish due to a ACL surgery.

But the Hawks have more than enough young talent to break the Stanley Cup drought.

Friday Morning Would…You Choose Jenna Fischer (Pam) or Rashida Jones (Karen)?

[Editor's Note: Welcome to MSF's new Morning Would series. This will be a regular feature here on the site where I basically have carte blanche to write about anything I want to. (And this differs from every other post...how?)

Primarily, I will be taking advantage of this feature on mornings like today, when there are no obvious hot button topics to tackle nor other weekly features to post, and I feel like invoking a clever, slightly crass pun while also providing "useful" info. Enjoy.]

We’re going off-topic with this one and taking a quick break from sports. Just for fun.

I don’t watch a whole lot of TV that does not involve sports. Lately, however, I have been catching up on old TV shows by buying the DVDs and watching an episode or two late at night while I wind down and fall asleep. Among the shows that I’d never seen and have now gotten caught up on: Scrubs, Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Burn Notice, and the incomparable Arrested Development.

So don’t point and laugh when I tell you that I have only recently discovered the greatness of The Office over the past month or so. Just last night I finished up the final episode of Season Three.

Before I’d seen the show, I never really understood what all of the fuss was about.
Now I know, and I get it…completely. (And even though I’m about to discuss two of the ladies from The Office, Dwight Schrute is clearly the best part about the show.)

In today’s edition of Morning Would, I am going to expound upon an answer I gave in the comments section of this week’s fantasy football Start Em, Sit Em post.

A reader asked whether I would start Glen Coffee or Steve Slaton at running back, and something tells me other people may have this very same decision to make this week at their #2 RB slot, or own one of these two players and are wondering what to expect in Week 4.

My answer is that I like both of them this week, but that I would start Steve Slaton, and here’s why:

During the first game of the season, against a tough BYU team, Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford was taken down at the end of the second quarter and landed on his throwing arm.

After the game, the Sooners released a statement saying that Bradford had sprained the AC joint in his throwing arm, and may be out for 2-4 weeks.

Now, after several weeks on the sideline, it appears he may return as early as this weekend against Miami.
