We have now reached the NFL mid-season, and it is time for Pro Football Insight to issue their Fantasy Mid-Season Awards.
The 2009 season has definitely had its share of disappointments and surprises, so without further delay, onto the PFI awards.
PFI Biggest Disappointment Team
QB-Trent Edwards-Bills This award could have went to several QB’s, but Edwards was a run away winner for me. Edwards was always middle of the pack as far as being a fantasy QB, but with the off-season acquisition of Terrell Owens, along with an array of other proven wide receivers and running backs, Edwards’ stock soared in the off-season. Edwards, however, has played his worst football since taking the starting job from J.P. Losman his rookie year.
RB-Matt Forte-Bears By fantasy points alone, Forte is ranked 30th among fantasy running backs. Forte was a top 5 pick in most fantasy league drafts, and is playing like a 6th or 7th rounder. Forte’s season should not continue to be this disappointing. With that said, Forte will have to play out of his mind from here on out to justify his draft position this year.
WR-Terrell Owens-Bills Owens started the pre-season by receiving a key to the city of Buffalo from the Mayor…I think they are trying to change the locks! Not that it is Terrell’s fault; my QB bust Edwards will not get him the ball. Owens’ consecutive games with a catch streak was murdered by Edwards this year, and I can only imagine how many holes Owens has bitten through his tongue to not say what he is feeling! I can tell you this, he will not be crying and saying, “That’s my quarterback” to defend Edwards.
TE-Alge Crumpler-Titans Could anyone miss Michael Vick more than Crumpler? He looks like he morphed with two other people. It looks like a defensive lineman is running pass routes with Crumpler’s current size. There are 3rd string tight ends with more fantasy numbers than Crumpler has produced, which could not be more opposite than his yester-years of his playing days in Atlanta.
Kicker- Wait until next week and the kicker you thought sucked will make 5 field goals. Kickers are the top 32 kickers in the world in regards to field goals. If the offense gets the kicker within the 35, they are usually good as gold.
Defense-Titans Think they miss Albert Haynesworth yet? How else could you explain such a highly touted defense to currently be the second worst fantasy defense in the NFL? Well, when your offense does not score, it will hurt your defense, but this bad?
PFI’s “Where Did You Come From?” Award
Miles Austin-WR-Cowboys Although he was slighted above to Steve Smith for the Biggest Suprise WR Award, “Where in the hell did Miles Austin come from?” In two games, Austin reeled in 16 catches for 421 yards and 4 TD’s.  His last two weeks have been insane, and if he is on your team, you don’t care where he came from, you just want his tear to continue!
